There is so much interest in this type of thing that I believe that a properly titled video on programming the new batteries could even draw more viewers to your channel.

Great video. I really enjoy when you guys tag team in explaining the “why” behind what you did. This battery application, the math on cycles, and searching for piece of mind is very similar to us sailors who rely on solar and battery systems on our boats. Im full off grid like you guys, and I ended up doubling up on my panels, and nearly tripling my battery bank. I ended up using Nissan Leaf modules, and Ive got around 32kw worth now. I was using the same Conext 5500 like you guys, and ended up upgrading to the 6800. Schneider makes good equipment. Good job on all you've accomplished!

I'm very impressed with the increase of Erin's strength. I did a binge watch from the beginning and she was barely able handle one sheet of plywood, as things progressed she could grab one and heave one to Josh standing on the loft. Then came the sheetrock where she could handle one without a struggle. Now watching her easily manhandle a Tesla battery without sight of any struggle. I watch about 10 off-grid homestead videos, and when it comes to explaining what you're doing and why, and trying to compare what you had to what you've got now, you are the best. You may be the only ones that understand what you're doing. No laughing matter. Your the only ones using this kind of batteries, I've never seen them before

Glad to see you switch to the Simpliphi batteries. In fairness to Tesla, their batteries are designed to be installed in their cars, not as part of off-grid systems. It sounds like you had no complaints about their performance so far, only their safety in your system. This video explains your reasons well for the swap. I am curious as to why you located the solar panels so far from the house. It looks like there is full-sun available much closer. You guys are great. Keep the videos coming.

I'm retired and I live in a smallish town on the south east coast of England where what you've done would be almost impossible. A beginners Users guide video (programming the system from ur POV is an extra plus for your channel..bout 7min mini vlog..ur choice..why u chose em and the main programming of the system from full usage (everyones at home) to minimum used (when no ones at home and basic water pump starts n stops and 1 light gets turned on at night) would be a Christmas gift. :) Stay safe..God bless

It's old school going off grid because many companies who supply the systems that make it possible come from a background where being in the middle of nowhere is just another day. Indeed many started making similar gear for the military/camping industry and the they went from the Kerosene Lamp to the LED and did the learning curve for those that followed when it comes to still being plugged in but not paying a utility to do it.

That’s super awesome guys like I had said on the last solar video you made I couldn’t be happier with mine I have six of them with a outback radian 8000 W inverter and 24 250w panels . I’m floating most of time because I only need 3 -5 hours of sunshine to fully charge my system .. I think these are the absolute best batteries out there today

Great vid and a very nice upgrade. To my understanding, battery technology will be changing significantly in the next few years. Glass batteries (solid-state battery) will be the future. Something to keep in mind.

I like to go back and watch a series like this from the beginning and just watched the polar vortex video from Feb. Erin(Aron?) mentioned Josh's bulging disc and it clicked why Erin takes on way more physical tasks than you would expect and Josh gets razzed about in the comments. Suffering from a spinal cord injury thanks to a degenerating spine with probably a dozen bulging discs from the neck down I can tell you Erin that Josh appreciates you more than you could ever realize. It would have been easier to hire a helper to try and take some of the load off and let you reduce the amount of effort you put in on top of homeschooling the kids and making Peruvian Chicken but you stepped up helped him take better care of his back. At the end of the day, Erin has learned a lot about construction and Josh has learned how much she really does love him. Kudos to you both. Now I'm hopping back to February.

The one pro you forgot is these are new batteries so you know how long they will last where as the Tesla batteries were second hand and you don't know how long they would last. Good choice I have been looking at the Battle Born 24 volt batteries also but the ones you bought seem to be getting popular also.

Also watching your families life that has already taken shape but is also constantly transforming into something continuously great and amazing to also being a model for my life and future generations to come. Great Video!! I will be going solar soon and will use essentially the exact system your family is using! It would be nice to have 10 TIPs on setting up your system, especially with the LithFe batteries. Would like to know what the voltage input from your array running into your power house which allows long distance connectivity with little % line drop, as well as hidden caveat which are not immediately apparent. Please provide a inventory list of all you solar equipment so I know what to get?

Just watching one of your earliest videos and reading the comments and had a slight epiphany that when anyone sends negative comments, they are not only upsetting the ones whose channel it is but are also offending everyone who likes and looks forward to the channel. That can be a lot of negative energy directed at one person!!!

Operating at high voltages provides significantly higher efficiency. The first step in the inverter is to boost the 48V input to over 300V. This step is eliminated in some inverters that can accept high battery voltages. Saving about 5% of the output inverter power.

Very helpful. Excellent info guys. Over here in Aus I have a 7kw PV system connected back to the grid. So during the day we use the power we generate first then any left over goes back to the grid and we're paid. 020c/kw. It used to be 0.60cents. But Gov rebates were stopped. Very good to know about thermal runaway etc wasn't aware of that. Keep up the good work. PS 40.0 degrees Celsius here today.

Write date of installation on each battery and every battery after that , just because as you get older you will forget . Yes you have video right now but , shit happens .

Great video thanks! One comment though. The way you have the power feed off of the parallel Bank coming from One battery will tend to work that battery harder especially under heavy loads because of the extra resistance of all the other cables. It might be better to have the positive come off one end of the bank and the negative come off the other. This will work all batteries much more equally due to equal resistance to all the batteries.

You guys made the right choice! LiPo's are touchy and reusing the Tesla packs comes with risk without their BMS. Sometimes you gotta pay the price to get a state of the art system that'll last decades! Love your videos!

@ the moment @ this time of the year we have not much of sunshine so normally youre solarpanels will not juice up the batteries. You have a back up generator, is it possible to hook up that generator on the batteries and when they are full, the generator will shut off? greets from the netherlands.

Hey guys, did you put a fresh air supply in the power house after you installed the gas dryer? Not sure how air-tight it, but you may be pulling quite a bit of negative pressure when running the dryer which could negatively affect the dryer and the heater you are using in there. This could also create a CO2 issue in there. Have a great day!

Programming video! Yes please!

We love your whole off grid setup ! Something for you to look at is your wiring ! I’m not %100 sure with your setup BUT most multiple battery setups work better and last longer if you take the power from the 1st battery and the ground from your last battery! This means that your whole battery bank is treated like ONE battery not (in you case) 3 batteries ! You have both the power and ground hooked to you #1 battery and what happens is that battery works harder and is always drained the farthest and the last (your#3 battery) never works to it full potential. So as and example (just pulling numbers outta the air) let’s just say your battery bank gets down to %50 you may find if you unhooked all batteries from each other and tested them separately you #1 might test at %40 #2 tests at %70 and #3 tests at %90 so your first battery is constantly being over worked ! If you hook them up with your power hooked to battery #1 and ground to battery #3 your system could get down to %70 and you could unhook them all and test separately and they would all test at the same % there for they are all truly sharing the load and will last longer with less chance of failure PLUS you will get more efficient power outta then and that will make all your things run better ! Hook your charging/solar system up the same way

We have a 12 volt system instead 48. we used to have to put our refrigeration on timers on the short days of winter we just switched over to 20 6volt batteries 15 year warranty ...no more timers power all night long ,we run welders and all kinds of shop tools all the time no problems

I had Solar City install my solar system on my house but the batteries weren’t available at the time. I wish I had been able to get the backup batteries as several times I’ve had power out and we were without power for 6 hours.
