At my last IT job, a critical MSI workstation for a design company we served had the exact same issue. MSI wouldnt touch the computer because it was discontinued despite only being two years old. I knew it was poor cooler contact and could have fixed it myself in 10 minutes with a new tube if thermal paste, but my manager was too chickenshit to let any of us try because the system was expensive ($3500 ish iirc). So the alternative was to have the system be a massive pile of shit that did nothing but generate support tickets. :)

I don't know what this guy used to clean out his old thermal paste. But I can tell it's something abrasive

Bruh scratched the heck outta that copper heatsink cause i think he was trying to put it on the copper and not the die itself, because he didnt want the liquid metal to pour out onto the die itself, as you can see when he lifts the heatsink off, there's no protection for the capacitors around the GPU. So by scratching it, he allowed the liquid metal to diffuse in and stick, but now he ruined his heatsink lmao

You know what, I have an Alienware x15 R2 from 2022 and it’s an amazing laptop for the price and warranty I paid. 3 years on-site repair, replacement if I damage or break anything (for free (no co-pays). Only parti don’t like is they had solder the ran to the board but it’s a beefy 32GB anyway. I will be sticking in a new m.2 NVME drive. It came with a 4TB drive initially. I also got a vapor cooled intel i7-1200HK (I think) and an NVidia 3070 Ti. All in all, it’s pretty epic. When gaming I occasionally get it warm enough that the fans are on full blast but hey, least it’s not an intel gem 13 or 14 i7!

I was a Dell field tech once upon a time; it was always a bad call when it was an XPS laptop.

I have a Dell gaming Laptop (not Alienware branded but comes with all the Alienware trashy software installed - don’t judge, it was on a huge sale!) and the GPU temp is normal to my understanding. It’s not actually 2c obviously, it’s just that whatever temperature sensor they used doesn’t turn on until there is some substantial load or temperature rise and reports 2c when it’s off. If I’m mistaken please do inform me; I was concerned that the sensor was f-- when I got the laptop, but warranty reps assured me it was normal.

Thermal Grizzly Kryosheets is where its at for laptops. One 50x50mm sheet is big enough to do a couple laptops

As an owner of one of these laptops(I have a nice desktop again =D) I can confirm that damage doesn’t happen unless the owner did something themselves

I liquid metal’ed my laptop over 2 years ago and it’s still running strong! Just hope it stays that way. I made sure to take the proper precautions around the CPU and GPU substrate(???) (not sure if that’s the right word), and all the other surface mount components

Remininds me of the one time I had to repair a XPS the customer shipped in and got back with issue still remaining and when I opened it it looked like this Alienware plus half a dozen screws missing. The customer was happy I fixed it in the end though.

Hey I have this exact pc and im currently having issues with an overheating cpu but a perfectly fine gpu and I made sure it was all clean and dusted inside and its been driving me crazy because games will blue screen me, so that specific short was fascinating to me.
