Overheating engine FIX!!!! As you know my canal boat has had an overheating engine! Well I have now fixed it!
My engine is a Ford XLD 1800 with a missing thermostat! Turns out when these engines are converted to marine use they often have the thermostat removed. Anyway I can' t actually believe it was such a simple fix for this overheating engine!

Logical reasoning and investigation leads to success! I have two of these engines- mine are raw water cooled, I have had one turning but the other is seized due to previous owner not draining down properly 😢

Well done for solving your problem Mark. All interesting stuff. I'm no mechanic, but sometimes a logical think-through, and a little patience does pay off, as you’ve shown. Life is an ongoing learning curve.

Hi Mark... well done on the detective work there... my concern now is that the hard copper pipe was burying itself into the soft plastic/rubber side wall of the hose and may now have caused a dent/tear on the inside which could pop and cause a leak... I think a new piece of pipe is in order.... thanks for sharing and keep safe until the next one...

Gday, nice fix and I agree that your coolant line is to small for that motor. A plumbing supplier will be able to fix you up with tails that will fit the threads but have a larger diameter tail and tea so you can replace the lines with a larger one. I had to do that on my motor and it made a bit difference. Most of the time on a cut it probably won't matter but if you going against the flow on a river you could cook it.

Congratulations !! I think the bore of the pipes is too narrow for the job though - I'd put the thermostat back in and use an inhibitor in the tank even if its just the stuff they put in domestic central heating

Cheers Trev :-) I have put some anti-freeze in that also has a corrosion inhibitor so hopefully that will help a bit. I am just waiting to hear back from Lancing Marine (they convert these engines for marine use) about the thermostat because I have noticed a couple of snipped wires not far from the thermostat housing and also an electrical plug at the bottom of the thermostat housing with nothing plugged into it! So I wonder if it was purposely removed when converted? Thanks for watching. Take care, Mark

nice one buddy. i cant help thinking "is'nt that brass pipe a little restrictive for a 1800cc engine" . its kind of like cooling your engine though a drinking straw??.

The skinny hoses are bleed hoses to allow any trapped air to make its way to the top of the system and do not really play a part in cooling when running.

@@lifeafloat5450 i thought it kinda looked like the heater hose on a car , has it came of where the water pump goes . my bad .glad its sorted anyway.

@@stevecooper8461 it went from the heat exchange unit to the thermostat housing. The smallest part off of the t piece I think went to the water pump but I didn't removed it to know for sure. It went in that general direction anyway!

I think you need a new T junction that one's to restrictive running a big engine. The wider the better buddy. I know you've sorted now but you will get a water pressure build up. Great vid bud.
