OVERLAND ADVENTURE: Cape Lookout National Seashore, Harkers Island, & OBX -2020- Beach Camping

It is a custom built CVT (Cascadia Vehicle Tent) trailer. It is on the heavy side due to being full steel though....And the accessories make it even heavier. He has the lid to the trailer on hydraulic lifts to aid in lifting to gain access inside. We are currently discussing doing a walk around video of his rig also, to include the trailer!

If you are wanting to use the amenities provided (showers/bath house) I would suggest not going too far from the ferry drop off ramp. Definitely make your way to the end of the island at least one day because the views are amazing but not optimal for camping! Watch out for turtles and definitely stay off the dunes! Also, plan on taking lots (and we mean lots) of bug spray!

There are bathrooms, with showers inside if needed, on the island. You can also book/rent a cabin on the island but we are not sure what all they include. I would contact Cape Lookout Cabins & Camps to verify information regarding the cabins. Throughout the island there are 2 bathrooms we ran into, one where the ferry drops you off and one on the southbound side of the island at the lighthouse.

Hello, We actually just booked our ferry ride with the Cape Lookout Cabins & Camps. Once your ferry ride is booked you are all set to camp on the island. Make sure you pre-book (with plenty of time) as slots fill up quickly!!

FYI....new for 2021, you need a permit to drive on the beach ($25). www.nps.gov/calo/planyourvisit/orv_ed_certificate.htm

@@TNTOverlander below directly from NPS site. NEW! -- Starting with the 2021 season -- The ORV Driving Permit replaces the ORV Educational Certificate. While there was no charge for the Educational Certificate, there will be a charge for the ORV Driving Permit. Obtain the ORV driving permit through recreation.gov (If you need to use the search box -- use "Cape Lookout National Seashore ORV Permits" as your search criteria) All vehicles will need to have this permit to drive on the islands. The ORV Driving Permit must be purchased online, for a fee of $25, prior to arriving on the islands through the recreation.gov website. Park staff will not be able to issue the permits on the islands. The permits will not be available until February of 2021. A printed copy of the permit must be carried in the vehicle while it is on the island. NOTE: To print out your permit: On the confirmation page/email of your permit purchase go to the "details" button on the bottom of the page and follow that link. On the details page there is a "print" button. This will allow you to print your permit.
