Nice to see someone building a rig that's not a Toyota or a Jeep! You seem to have a good fabrication skills. I look forward to following your progress.

Thanks! Nothing against either of those, but they’ve been done to death haha. I wanted to see what I can make out of a less common platform in the off-road world

Sweet rig! Mine is an 06 3rd gen Dakota. I have a similar tall bed rack with a hardshell RTT. My struggle is that basically nobody makes anything for third gen's, so it's all DIY kludged together.

That's that challenge for sure, I've found it very rewarding to DIY it.

Why would you get a V6 Dakota? One of the only benefits of the Dakota was a smaller framed P/U with a V8
@4x406Offroad

@@tonyinfinity the used market at the time sucked and I kind of wanted a manual, so of the available trucks this was the first manual I found that wasn’t trashed. Now that I’ve had lots of seat time wheeling it, I do wish I had held out for a v8 and compromised and gotten an automatic, but it didn’t cross my mind five years ago

Are those 265/75/16s? Tire size?
@4x406Offroad
@4x406Offroad 5 месяцев назад
They are 285/75r16, they’re pretty close to 33x10.5 if I remember correctly. They definitely rub a bit on the fender liner even after I trimmed the plastic away though

What's the limit (increase) you'd go on tyre size? I've been advised not to exceed 3% on orignal 245/70/16. I'm considering 280/65/16 or 260/70/16. Am I being too conservative? This video inspired me to buy and build up a neglected Dakota. Best thing I've done in years

I definitely think you can go bigger if you want. If you’re going to do any off roading, I’d recommend a taller, narrower tire. That would give you the most vertical clearance under the truck and the best clearance through suspension travel when the front wheels are turned to full lock. Between the two options you gave, I’d recommend the 260/70r16, since it’s narrower it’ll give you better clearance when turning. (I’m also assuming you have like a 1-2” torsion bar lift for the front). If you’re interested in going bigger, I’d say look into 275/70r16, but there will be plastic trimming to do and you may have to change the gear ratio in your differentials too.

What kind of offroading do you usually do? Any overlanding, or just some simple stuff?
@4x406Offroad
@4x406Offroad 5 месяцев назад
Definitely enjoy some overlanding, there’s a handful of alpine lakes near me that are excellent camping spots I’m a little limited by tire size and wheelbase at the moment but I mainly go for mild rock crawling and snow wheeling with this truck.
