This overlanding trip starts and ends in Escalante, and travels through the Grand Staircase - Escalante and Glen Canyon National Monuments of Utah. This scenic adventure, explores Smoky Mountain Road, Recreation Road NP 230, Alstrom Point, Croton Road, Left Hand Collet Canyon, and Hole in the Rock Road, and is a remote, 200-plus mile overlanding journey. Be aware that the only gas is in Escalante or Big Water. I took extra fuel and just to be safe, made the 26-mile round trip detour to Big Water to top off my tank.
Day 2 - Alstrom Point and Croton Road: Alstrom Point should be on everyone’s trail list. It is not a challenging trail, but the views of Lake Powell and Gunsight Bay are spectacular. Additionally, there are a number of campsites along the rim of the canyon, overlooking Lake Powell. Croton Road travels 26-miles through the Grand Staircase, before re-connecting with Smoky Mountain Road. In addition, Croton Road also serves as a connector route to Hole in the Rock Road via Left Hand Collet Canyon. The views are superb but keep your eyes on the trail. The shelf road climb, to the top of the bench, is a long, narrow, steep, and rocky ascent but with magnificent views of the Grand Staircase.
