Overlock Stitch by hand (Basic Hand Sewing)
Let's start to learn how to sew overlock stitch by hand. Usually we do the overlock stitch using machine. But I will show you how to do overlock by hand.
Overlock stitch is used to lock the end of the fabric. This is also called as lock stitch.

Most frustrating thing ever when the video skips at the most important part every single time 😂 but thanks for the vid

Watch it again. Slow it down if you need to. Because the only part it skips is straightening out out the fabric and then resituating her hand before the needle goes in again. (Because of the thick fabric and thread) Nothing important is cut out at all, much less the "most important part". 🙂

I thought so too. I seem to be missing if she grabs one piece of thread or two when she loops it through to make that straight edge across the top. Guess I'll just have to try it...trial & error

I’m glad you wrote this because I watched it again and again and I was wondering why I wasn’t “getting” it. It may not technically contain anything useful but the jump cut is jarring and confusing.
@Noryle

@@mynameisben123 I imagine you’re referring to when they wrap a loop that seems to be out of nowhere around the needle. And I agree it’s not very clearly shown. After replaying that part several times (which would be unnecessary if it was shown a little more deliberately), it seems the key here is that they are working with two strands of thread. The “loop” that they’re feeding the needle through is actually them splitting the two strands and passing the needle in between them, so one strand is in front of the needle and the other strand is behind. The strand in front of the needle becomes the left edge of the upside down triangle, while the strand behind the needle forms the top and right edge. They are also twisting each time after splitting the two strands to alternate which strand goes in front of the needle and which goes behind. Hope this explanation helps.

Can this type of stitch be used at the bottom of a tshirt? Like does it stretch? If not, any suggestions? I'm new to the thread game...
@barefacedquestions
@barefacedquestions Год назад
T shirts are usually made from knit fabric, so they don't really need this overlock stitch. I suppose you're talking about hemming a t shirt. If you are, look up how to hem knit fabric. Then you can use this stitch for finishing, or leave it as it is.

a herringbone aka catch stitch is a stretchy hand stitch, the one in the video I don't know but I may try sewing it and see if it stretches

I think this video would be more helpful if you demonstrate the technique without the jump cuts. I’m not seeing some of the steps I needed to see to learn the technique.

Are you alternating which string you're putting on the edge vs allowing to reach into the fabric? Are you twisting it every time?

Does this stitch have to go over the edge of the fabric? So if the seam allowance is 1cm, thenn the stitch should also be 1cm high?

Knit fabric doesn't really need seam finishing. But I think this stitch is similar to zigzag stitch so I think it will work on knit.
