*YES OVERLORD* 5:17 Okay just to explain something, in the (Real) World of Overlord, the Earth has been polluted to the point where people around the world need Gas Masks to even go outside due to thick clouds of smog. In the game that Overlord is based off of, the setting is a fantasy game YGGDRASIL based on the same name of the World Tree from Norse Mythology. Its a very well done take on the "villain" being the protagonist.

Ah, Overlord. I like it. It's a very "What would happen if you play a villain character when you get isekai'd as your character" Plus, freaking overpowered characters. I like it when they deal with the bad guys of the world they're in. Very power-fantasy satisfactory.

Overlord is my favorite anime.. it's not for everyone, that's for sure, but if you like really overpowered MCs and world building then you'll like it. Hail Ains Ooal Gown! Also, don't think this is some happy-to-go anime.. it's a dark fantasy and the MC is the villain in this world. Hope ya like it!

I liked it enough I started reading the light novels as well. Was actually very impressed on one one hand, because while the anime cuts a lot of explanations for time, the writing is consistent when it comes to following its own rules as opposed to changing or making up new ones constantly like many isekai fantasies do. Problem with the books is the first one breaks a cardinal rule of writing, as there are nearly four pages of info dumping about Ainz's abilities before the story even begins. Again, consistency is good because everything he does in the story later, from the spells he uses to the skills he has, all come from the lists in this info dump, but it's the kind of info dump that will make all but the most determined reader likely give up then and there.

@@Vejcucnikos The novels do have a lot of neat extra information when you're already familiar with the anime. Like I said, a lot of it had to be cut for time. Like the fact that Ainz himself is not nearly as powerful as the anime might make him seem. So the way the game rules work, for an example, is the the classes of the game max out at level 15, and a player's total number of levels max out at 100, so a character is built from a combination of classes. And Ainz's class setup, according to the books, is actually terrible. He's an RP build, not a meta one. Basically an ideal character in this game would be a combination of magic, ranged, and melee classes, but Ainz is built purely from magical classes, leaving him basically defenseless when it comes to close range combat. And that's the revelation of the fact it's not that he's that strong, it's that the world he's in is that weak. There's also character breakdowns of classes and levels in the glossary of each book, and Clementine, for example, was only in the mid-thirties of levels. In fact, most of the NPCs of Nazarick are actually stronger than Ainz because they are actually meta builds. In terms of pure numbers, Shar-Teel actually should have destroyed Ainz when they fought at the end of season 1. But he's both smart enough to know how to use his build, and he also cheats like hell with the pay-to-win items. Which is actually something else the show doesn't mention, but the books make it clear he has a limited supply of, and thus only tends to use them when he's certain it's a matter of life and death for himself. The books also go more into Ainz's psychology, and the fact that the longer he's staying in character as the evil Ainz, the more the original person he used to be is being lost in his own mind. So they are a good read, especially when you're already familiar with the anime.

@@freedantheeternal same def my either my favourite anime or second since code geass is amazing as well. got the first 3 light novels and loving them definitely going to get all 16volumes just a lot of money is the problem. Plus recently found the 10thanniversairy edition in Japanese and while cant read Japanese would still love them just problem of money again since that would mean getting 34 books in total but def would be worth it.

Overlord has one of the deepest storytelling i've seen compared to other Isekai/New World anime shows. The light novel has soo much into that the anime sadly couldn't cover it all, but still amazing watch. 😄

To add to this, his dub VA passed away inbetween seasons, so he was replaced in S2. That said, his new VA is such a perfect voice match I didn't even notice until I saw he had 2 different VAs listed on his wiki page

If you like Slime, there's a good chance you'll like Overlord. It is a darker tone overall but retains the fun character interactions, world building, and diplomacy between a newly founded political entity and the already existing world. Those are my favorite types of isekai, ones with founding a kingdom, political machinations, and a fun squad of accomplices.

The stakes aren't for the main guy, it's mostly focused on the inhabitants of the this world. The story is about these guys being the villains. The main character rules mostly over evil demons, and he himself has become an actual Lich. He's not a human anymore. He's an actual undead. And these guys are the villains taking over the world. Mercilessly.

You touched on a major plot point in Log Horizon, where the NPCs we're Bound by their core motivation and although they were sentient would die permanently and would either fear or admire player characters who were seen as these Immortal demi god/superheroes because they could be reincarnated for spoiler reasons. Eventually it becomes the personal mission of one NPC to find the secret to immortality and become a player character with skills and abilities and the ability to gain experience and level up past their class.

I'm so glad you're watching this show! It's one of my favorites, and it made me buy the light novels (original material for the story), which is even better, but of course you have to cut some things when adapting something into an anime. The animation overall is decent, a bit dissapointing for Mad House, but the studio had been very busy that year (One Punch Man among others). The author is very good at world building, and if you are familiar with MMOs, you will enjoy it even more.

Just so you know, there's actually a Metroidvania-style Overlord game that came out a while back called 'Escape From Nazarick', although you might want to finish the first season just so you have greater context for that. Incidentally, there's a totally unrelated game series also called Overlord, which I am a huge fan of. It's basically Microsoft's answer to the Pikmin franchise, and I absolutely adore and endorse at every possible opportunity because I appreciate both the RTS-lite gameplay and the fact that the series lets you embrace cartoonish villainy without relying on edginess or grimdark seriousness. Seriously, these games do not get enough love.

I feel like the best way you can describe Overlord is that it’s basically Game of Thrones but during reign/campaigns of Aegon the Conqueror. In that they’re both stories are (in broad strokes) about a foreign invader, seeking to create their ideal form of a prosperous society, by way of uniting various nations/kingdoms under their singular banner through using their sheer overwhelming might and power. Just replace dragons with (actual) magic, hordes of undead, legions of demons and monsters of pretty much every shape and size, and the occasional Eldritch Lovecraftian horror.

this is one of the anime that's so good but the light novel is so much better because if you've read the novel, you'll know just how much details got left out or badly translated to animation a lot of the subtlety, world building and much more unfortunately wasn't adapted properly in my opinion and I'm a bit saddened that the latest two volumes (the ones about elf kingdom) are a bit lackluster, since the author said he got a bit tired of Overlord and wanted to move on to different project so he shortened the expected number of final volume numbers I mean it can't be helped, the author can do whatever he wants. But it's still a bit disappointing as a long time fan like me the writing for the Elf Kingdom arc felt rushed, even though it was two volumes it felt like one unlike the Holy Kingdom arc, it was two volumes long and each one was full of details and so amazing

Spoiler: The stakes and motivation here ends up becoming something like him trying to fit in to this new world, and trying to create a situation where his servants can coexist with the humans that exist in that place. To this end, he sends people out to explore, and essentially adopts and kidnaps some humans into his castle/dungeon. The danger becomes creating a situation in which his servants overrun the world, creating enough animosity in the humans where they decide to do something draatic, and kill a subordinate, which he treasures alot. Btw, he doesn't necessarily feel anything for the humans, but I seem to remember him having a sense of justice or proportionality (until a certain event). I maybe revealed too much, but it's not easy to explain motivations without uncovering some of the plot points. Also, the anime doesn't exclusively follow the mc.

Overlord is a great choice and is really good (to an annoying extent) in world building. Hells paradise is also really great and easy to get into but I would say checkout Tanya the evil it fits more with overlord theme and will keep your attention

so as a novel reader, the first season cut a lot of the stuff that later seasons would tend to leave in, and the first season always gives people the wrong impression. Its much more about the world building than season 1 lets on. This season was made as a glorified advert and the originally intended to make another, but did for whatever reason.
