Do what the instructions say. If it says 3 minutes that is all you need. Basically it isn’t going do more than that. That gummy feel is bad. Your hair is being damaged from the wet. Look into the Redken Extreme line.

First of all, cackling at Cruz and the bathroom moment because WOW you're a mom. Second, my immediate thought is to follow the manufacturer instructions because it sounds like heat is the component you're missing and since you don't have a hooded dryer maybe put in the conditioner and then throw a shower cap over your head and a towel (basically allow your body heat to work in your favor and trap it) for an hour and then rinse it out or whatever.

Hi Joyce. As a relaxed gal myself, I once tried the overnight conditioning thing. With protein, my hair felt like straw. With moisture, my hair was limp and lifeless. With both, I also had incredibly itchy scalp for days afterwards. Overnight conditioning is a no for me. I do much better with an hour or less...no real difference from extending to two or three hours, or more.

I can relate to that! No overnight treatments

The Natural Haven Bloom is a science-based haircare blog with a great post about deep conditioning. It references studies that say conditioners don't have increased benefits past 30 mins. So that's how long I would do it, although I do like heat to maximize the conditioner uptake. Try one of those microwavable conditioning caps. Or microwave a damp washcloth and put it over your plastic cap, with another plastic cap on top (found that tip on RU-vid). Or just wrap your head in a towel. Also, many people, including myself, find that the scalp becomes irritated when it's exposed to constant moisture for hours on end, and this can lead to excessive shedding.

Depends on hair porosity no? Too much moisture causes weak hair as does hair that's too dry.

overnight deep conditioning is so UNNECESSARY & OVERRATED, you will be slowly destroying your hair. I did it overnight back in the day, & my hair became mushy, lifeless, and would stretch & pop off. Don't jump on every hair bandwagon around, too much of a good thing is not good. If you want to see more benefits, deep condition twice a week with heat 30-60 mins, moisturize, do minimal styling & allow your hair to fully dry in between washes. That is all you need to do for your hair to thrive. Leave that overnight deep condition to the natural hair gals.

I have sisterlocks and usually don't use products at all except oils and Castile soap to wash. Every time I do use a conditioner, even the most natural ones, I get that same waxy feeling you described. I can even see the white residue sitting on my hair even after a thorough wash. I'm not sure if it's because after months of not using conditioner, you have to retain your hair to accept it and soak it in. 🤷🏽‍♀️

In my opinion, anything past the recommend time is unnecessary as it would have been tested. They give a time for a reason.😉

I don't think deep conditioning past the instructions is a good idea, it would be like cooking something longer than a recipe states. Now I have deep conditioned overnight but that was out of pure laziness.

The recipe analogy is a little off bc equipment and temps vary. Conditioners and treatments are more controlled.

I am here because of protein overload on my relaxed hair. I don’t moisturize & seal enough throughout the week. I deep condition every week but my hair ends are breaking off because of my last protein conditioner

you don't have to deep condition as long with relaxed hair. You want to use something more light weight so that you can keep a good texture and get the most amount of body. Stick to doing a dime-quarter sized amount of oil in your hair like every other day and still weekly /bi-weekly washes :)

Don't do it. I think you will find that most things that worked when you were natural will not work when relaxed. That's what I've seen from youtubers who went natural to relaxed. As far as leaving conditioners over night, since your strands are weaker, everything can be overdone. I have experienced the gummy feeling with natural hair though, too. I'm pretty sure relaxing your hair alters the porosity entirely. I may be wrong, but I think it makes the hair have a higher porosity, which might be why you notice this change in your hair's response. I think the change in porosity is part of why relaxed hair responds differently to moisture, protein, water, and products in general.

I think it feels that way because of the protein. Maybe if it didnt have protein in it, it would not feel that way. I hope this helps.

I'd imagine the hair would feel like wet cotton..I mean why not just follow the directions as per the creators lol..if they say 3 minutes it's 3. If they say 15 mins with heat then do that. Leaving relaxed hair wet for a prolonged time is never good
