This is a lighthouse I’ve been studying for years. It’s my favorite one in the entire world. I wish this video had existed back when I began because I could’ve really used such a detailed tour of the interior back when I began my studies! I’m so absolutely jealous. I wish more history had been included, though. The longest period a keeper ever spent there without leaving was 99 days. Most men never returned after their first three week stint, which is typically how long they worked with a week off before heading back. No one really stayed for months at a time. It’s rumored one man in the 40s had to be taken off the island in a straight jacket because of how maddening the isolation was, but it’s never been confirmed. There was a radio transmission that had a man declaring that if they didn’t send a boat for him immediately, he was going to start swimming. I’m surprised y’all didn’t know someone died there after an explosion, either. The fire kept the other three men left to sit outside on the rock with only a tarp for cover before someone saw smoke and came to help them. So much more could’ve been included, but I digress because I still love this video. I’m glad it was able to be created. I hope enough money is raised for its restoration in my lifetime.

@@a.thiago3842 Lake Superior is a HUGE lake, and there are many lighthouses around the Great Lakes that also involve a lot of tragedy. Michigan even has more lighthouses than any other US state. Stannard Rock is also the farthest lighthouse from land in all of North America. It’s also just one of the most distant offshore lighthouses in the entire world. It’s really just quite special.

The lighthouse keepers had quite a strict routine to follow, of observations, watch keeping, repairs & maintenance, cleaning, record keeping, ensuring the light was burning when it should, receiving & keeping account of supplies. Receiving mail & newspapers, signalling to passing vessels etc. They also read, studied & had hobbies & wrote letters, on top of fishing, cooking etc. Along with many old salts they did knotwork, sewed & knitted. Some lighthouse keepers made ships in bottles, or made models out of matchsticks or painted, or played a musical instrument. Some made small things to be sold later. Each would have had their bedspace with whatever photographs or books or prayers they kept. Many kept a record of sightings of birds & other wildlife & astronomical occurences, along with official observations of weather & sea conditions. All of which helped to pass the time. It was not a life for everyone but once you were into a routine, it was possible to get used to it, especially if you got on well with your companions.

When I was in the Coast Guard a couple decades ago, I was on the buoy tender out of Duluth. We serviced the Stannard Rock Lighthouse several times during my 3 years on the Sundew. I've been down in those tunnels in the day time and was freaked out. You guys are brave. The Rock of Ages Lighthouse over by Isle Royale has a similar base with tunnels spoking out around the round base. That one is supposedly haunted too. I really enjoyed the video, it brings back a lot a memories. Thanks!
@tamiller81
@tamiller81 Год назад
What is the purpose of the tunnels, and what was that pool at the end? I have to know! Do they go out into the rock under the lake?
@arjun.1751
@arjun.1751 Год назад
Tell some stories 😀
@digitaldan8223
@digitaldan8223 Год назад
@@tamiller81 I think the tunnels were for multiple purposes. Primarily used to store flammables (these lighthouses were powered by oil for 60+ years). The pool at the end is a bilge, of sorts. Not really a "septic tank" but sorta like a septic tank. Secondary purpose of the tunnels was for draining water out of the main rooms in the bottom of the light house. When the lake gets angry and 35-40 foot waves are pounding the lighhouse, the water that made it inside had to be drained down and away. I would love to be able to read the lighthouse logs from the early 1900's to get a better understanding of how it worked. No, I don't think the tunnels at Stannard Rock actually go far enough out to be actually under the lake. I believe they are part of the crib and end before they would be considered under the lake, but that's a guess. I remember thinking the same thing at the Rock of Ages Lighthouse. Those tunnels go further if my memory is correct, and when I asked an old timer about it, he said they didn't go beyond the crib.
@digitaldan8223
@digitaldan8223 Год назад
@@arjun.1751 Well, "back in the day" when I was exploring Lake Superior and these lighthouses, the story was that the keeper on the Rock of Ages Light went crazy and murdered his wife and children. Dismembered their bodies, and buried them in rock at the end of the tunnels. This was before the internet, so Google didn't exist to verify anything... The buoy tender I was stationed on anchored next to the Rock of Ages light for a week while we were working on it back in the early 90's, and nobody would spend the night in the lighthouse. No one "saw a ghost" or anything, but there was enough weird sounds and things happening to make us think it could be haunted. Things falling off tables, tools leaning against a wall falling, etc.

I agree. The internet I could live without, ditto for mobile phones. Could live quite happily there for one to two months, so long as I had food and water and warm clothing. A portable solar panel and a small 150 amp lithium battery inverter would keep an array of small devices charged. My old Nintendo wide screen DX, with data cards that play a reasonable game of chess; scrabble; solitaire; about 180 classic books; etc would satisfy most of my entertainment. A couple of books with puzzles and a chess set. My old Franklin wordmaster hand held dictionary and games would be handy. My NEO2 portable word processor runs on 3 AA batteries that last about an amazing 800 hours use. I’d also pack my old wind-up Sony radio, 2 minutes winding, 30 minutes listening. All these old handheld devices, plus a few more, would easily fit in a backpack.

I have a large framed painting/print of this lighthouse in a storm above my bed. I love it. Having worked in a historic lighthouse, I was so attacted to it...the blue colors are awesome. I passed it up, but drove back the next day and purchased it. I found out that it is a well known picture of this particular lighthouse. The best part is that I found it at a Goodwill store. One of my best finds thrift shopping. I enjoyed this video, even though it was somewhat silly. More known history should have been given if possible. I thought that the inside of the lighthouse would be in better condition. This is definitely an historic place that should be restored. I often wonder how it was built and made so secure to last that long so isolated in the water.

I almost bought a lighthouse. It was a US decommissioned lighthouse on one of the Great Lakes up in Milwaukee. It was only $5000 and maybe 600 yards off the coast. Very rocky and hard to moor any boat to so I thought a sky ride would be cool to get on / off. I wanted to make it into a trendy restaurant / nightclub that’s one of a kind but… the problem was it gets horrible unbelievable weather during winter. Like huge swells as high as 60 feet crashing onto the lighthouse. Who wants to go eat at a swanky restaurant if you’re going to get drenched with cold freezing water. Wow! that was AWESOME to say the least. I would love to spend a night in a lighthouse, you guys made my dream come true. Also, it takes a lot of courage to venture into those tunnels in the morning, let alone the night. I hope people donate for maintaining this amazing lighthouse and respect for those who build it back in 1882.

As a Stannard, I love the relevance to it being the loneliest and one of the scariest light houses and spaces around the world. My daughter didn't know until her adult years that her name is also a light house and a town in Russia, careful the FBI may come and Raid our home just because of our names.

Great video. I love lighthouses. That's definitely one I'd love to explore so thanks for doing that for me. I wonder if the basement passages didn't lead to tanks for fuel oil and just bulk storage. Assuming it had no power from shore, there would have been at least one generator on-site to charge the batteries, run the lights and other equipment.

There is a similar lighthouse off the coast of Cohasset, Massachusetts called Minot's Ledge Light. Built around the same time as Stannard Rock. A coupe of miles offshore, built on a tall rock in the Atlantic, it's a pretty lonesome place. I've been out there in summertime, on a boat circling the structure, but I would never want to try it in the winter. You dudes got balls.

In 2007, I was stationed in Dollar Bay MI at USCG station Portage. Myself (47' MLB Qualified Engineer / Boarding Officer) and a crew of 5 other brave men had to make a 7 hour trip to this lighthouse, as the CG crews in Marquette MI (the lighthouse is in their AOR or area of responsibility) had been doing SAR missions (Search and Rescue) all day due to heavy winds and 10-15' rolling waves on Lake Superior and were considered "bagged" (had spent too many hours underway in a 24 hour period per USCG policy). 7 hours in 10-15' waves from Dollar Bay MI to this lighthouse on a USCG 47' Motor Life Boat, to rescue a family of 6 that were blown into the lighthouse and DIW (Dead in the water). They were all soaked, in mild stages of hypothermia, holding on for dear life. In most cases a helicopter from CG air station Traverse City would have beat us there, however their rescue teams were "bagged" as well from too many missions in the heavy winds and rough seas all weekend. The look on the faces of this family, which included an infant and a 7 year old, when we arrived on scene was that of fear for their lives. We had no communication with them since 30 minutes after we left Dollar Bay MI, as their boats electrical systems was compromised from damage and water intrusion. Their boat was less than 20 minutes from being completely submerged, and they were actually beginning to climb the ladder onto the lighthouse when we arrived. In 30 minutes we had them all onboard in a warm cabin below deck, had hooked their vessel up to a towline, and myself and another engineer had pumped the water from their vessel with a P6 pump, and patched the small holes in the hole temporarily, and successfully towed them to Marquette MI. Almost 5 hours straight south (with the weather). It was the scariest day of their lives, and wildly enough, exhilarating for us. We trained heavily for missions that crucial and they weren't too common. But everyone was safe, and I'll never forget that rescue mission for the rest of my life

Back in my day, the MLB's were 44 footers. I assisted rewiring and replace all the electronics in the one stationed in Tawas, MI after it rolled and righted itself. I was on the Bristol Bay (and it's barge) out of Detroit in '86 before A school, and finished my 9 year enlistment on the Sundew out of Duluth from '92 to '94. That 7 hour trip in 10-15 foot rollers doesn't sound like much fun, but I bet the 5 hour trip to Marquette made up for it. Nothing beats that feeling when the rescue is successful, especially when it's an entire family. Thank you for your service, Dan.

@@Lunafreya_Nox Sure a rogue wave might come, but that’s why they didn’t visit during the stormy season & that lighthouse has survived more rogue waves than you can count. What if a rogue airplane comes crashing out of the sky and lands on your house tonight!? Nothing anyone can do about random acts of nature, these lads were far safer than 90% of the population taking a late night city walk 🙄🤣… This was a privileged adventure & well planned out, no scary survival required at all! Now if the boat taxi driver decided to abandon them there, I’d imagine they would learn how to fish real quick & survival might become a thing momentarily 🤷‍♂️
