Overnight test of Fully Enclosed Tarp Shelter Set Up in actual conditions

In the field, overnight test of the Fully Enclosed Tarp Configuration. I wanted to see if this was really a feasible survival tarp set up. I also incorporated the SOL Escape Bivy in the test.
I would say this is a doable set up in a forest setting like I did. The most important would be to have or make a ton of stakes/pegs to secure it. The center pole could be made to work, but the ridgeline would be my preference. I would not use this in an open field or area though. I would use a more streamline design.
The SOL Bivy worked well. I wouldn't say you are going to sleep like a baby, maybe enough to gain strength. I would wear as much as possible including footwear and get fully enclosed in it if I were going to rely on it.

I like the set up with the ridge lines better. It gives you more room inside your shelter.

experience is king .Food for a thought.Lower to the ground with the tarp.I like a ridge line and I do what I need with the ends depending on the conditions.In the wet cool months condensation is a given no matter what you do.How long does it take to put up your shelter?You said your feet got cold and wearing your boots might help.My experience is that initially my feet are warmer but by the middle of the night my feet are cold and soaked .Now i have no chance of warm feet.I Cary a small piece of fleece now to keep my feet warm.I also rely on a mall fleece blanket and survival blanket when day tripping up a river.A plastic garbage bag and some natural loft underneath goes a long way too.I have never tried one of the sos bivy sacks.I came close last monday at swains though. May sound corny but that is one of the best videos I am yet to see on you tube concerning survival.way to many living room narrations for me.

That was great Bruce. 100% authentic test, and honest review. It looks good for a basic shelter in the conditions you described. Good to know the limits, so you can have realistic expectations and know what to expect. Great job, very informative.

Thanks for your efforts and review. My dad said when he used to hunt in Alaska they would get dropped off by plane and use a roll of plastic to sleep under. He said they put a tuna fish can over a stick for the center pole to not poke through the sheeting, and piled snow on the edges to hold it down. I came looking for what a person might need to do one of these with a pu-poly tarp and not poke through, thanks for the video.

As always, a well thought out video and excellent production. Great real world test. I really like that setup. I don't think I have ever seen this type of tarp configuration. Learn as you go.....perfect. I like the ridge line as well. I have the SOL Bivy but have never tried it. You have inspired me to make sure I try out my emergency gear. I appreciate you sharing the test.

+Sleeves I figured you would understand what I am up to. You are in similar situations that I am quite often. I would love to know your opinion of the bivy. I did see the value and it is not meant to provide a feather bed sleep experience but it will go in the pack for sure. The tarp set up is a known now and hopefully you have a realistic view of its capabilities. We don't have a lot of dry wood....really it is soaked all winter so a fire is a big maybe. Last November I did the lean-to and the long fire, again a good learning experience. Thanks for watching.

bringing at least one of those broad snow/sand metal stakes (which doubles up as a cat-hole scoop) stake so your tarp doesn't blow away is a necessity.. and like you say a few nylon ones weigh nothing and can be useful pinning your foam sit pad down or making your poncho into a tarp. no wasted weight there. very suspicious of those SOL stay alive 'a bit longer' (?!) things.. i think people put too much trust in them. anyway a great test and totally agree with what you say about showing best practice. keep up the great work.. really enjoying your channel and of course have subbed!

Yes excellent point on the stake. I have become pretty good at stick digging, but the snow stakes are a great choice and don't cost $20 like other shovels. I really appreciate you taking a look at the channel. Take Care, Bruce

@@naturecallsoutdoors Perhaps bringing along a small towel and wiping the walls would help, if you're concerned about condensation dripping.
@oakleafNLB
@oakleafNLB 8 лет назад
I've used this kind of tarp-tent set-up several times now, also in bad weather situations and the biggest problem i've seen is the condensation build up inside I use a tarp that has plenty of extra loops where i can place more pegs or lines to tie this set-up so also strong winds and massive rain does not blow it down, not even on open places. Since i used also a 10 by 10 tarp to make this set-up it is just big enough to lie down without touching the walls. but still the fit is very tight, people which are taller then 1.80meter won't have much comfort. nevertheless it is in my opinion a good set-up for a night out. about responsability i woudl like to express that YT viewers also have someting like their own responsability, if yoiu just take things you see on YT for granted and don't give it a try yourself before you would need it in a real situation you're depending on it ... you are also working and doing things without self responsability towards yourself and perhaps others of your party.

+oakleafNL B Thanks for watching and the great info. I have learned so much from your videos, especially the tarp configurations. I agree with all you said also. I didn't realize that having it pegged out completely would make such a difference. I will be bringing about 10 pegs in my kit now. The problem I have, and just couldn't keep my mouth shut is when I look at videos where obviously there is no real experience and there is so many views and positive comments. Sometimes I get scared that people with little experience will actually heed the advice and utilize some terrible advice. Thanks again for all your videos. Keep them coming Bruce

@scruff_uk
@scruff_uk 8 лет назад
+Nature Calls Hi Bruce. Yes I think that's the way to do it. As it happens I have asked my good lady for some trekking poles for Christmas. Hopefully I'll be able to experiment with some tarp configurations then...I may even brave the cold hills to do it too. I am thinking some kind of wedge, to face in to the wind, and probably two poles up front. I'm not sure of stability. I'll have to also look into some lightweight pegs to pack out too. There is little to no suitable vegetation, heather doesn't really count. Even a suitable peg length to penetrate the thick clumps of grass, and hold fast in the peaty ground will take some researching. As I am taking more regular solo hikes, and during these more winters months, I really do want to be prepared for all eventualities, be it for my own care or that of other hikers or runners on the trails. Thanks again amigo

Nice video Bruce, I admire your transparency. Its definitely one thing to say "Heres a fully enclosed tarp set-up" without trying it out personally, but being able to give feedback on your own experience using that set-up add authenticity. I've played about with this set up before, but wasn't too keen on it.... the lack of ventilation was a major drawback. I opt for the tarp-tent config if I need extra protection from rain and wind. Other than that its an a frame set up or nice big diamond shelter with a small fire infront. Thanks for sharing. AtB, Jimmy

+Jimmy Goes Wandering Thanks Jimmy. The other problem I know we all have is just finding the time to do this type of thing, and just go out and explore and have fun. I am on a little vacation and shot out during the week for this one. I hope it covers the subject well enough so those who can't fit it in benefit. I also have a real issue with people that say they use it all the time in their videos but never see it done in a real life scenario. I need to just do the a frame style out on the flat sometime. I remember seeing a lass do it once and she made it, but it looked brutal. Looks like fun. Take care brother Bruce

At 8:38, it’s not so much about ‘dangerous videos’. It’s about about doing it right the first time. If you’re caught on a nasty weather stormy night, with temps dropping possibly, you really don’t need the hassle of having to go out in the elements again and again in order to fix the tent. Very good video, I must say. Thank you.

Dave Canterbury suggests packing fresh dry thick insulated socks to go to bed in. Feet sweat during the day then at night that moisture makes for cold feet. If you didn't do that give it a try.

With all those trees, you could have suspended the ridge by using a small stone tied up to a ridgeline. This eliminating the risk of a center pole punchering through the tarp and providing extra room.

@larrydonna369
@larrydonna369 7 лет назад
I use an 8 x 10 sil-nylon tarp instead of a tent. I rig it A-frame style by tying a line between two trees or between one pole and a tree. It goes up very quickly. I have 1 ft strips of mosquito netting sewn along the 10 ft sides and triangle flaps along the 8-ft sides to form doors. I've been in thunderstorms, including a little over 4 inches in 12 hours, and it kept me dry. Because it is open on both ends, as well as along the sides, condensations is not an issue. You would think water would blow in from the ends, but it has not been a problem. The netting stops the mosquitoes and also seems to help block the water from blowing in. It is a roomy, lightweight, and inexpensive alternative to a tent. I would be interested in whether you think an A-frame setup would be an improvement over the enclosed setup because of the improved ventilation.
@naturecallsoutdoors
@naturecallsoutdoors 7 лет назад
I am really similar to you when it comes to actual deployment of tarp set ups. I also normally do the A-frame and have been fine. Just a little forethought in the setup and it works fine. I had seen this set up quite a few times on RU-vid and needed to test it out myself. I don't think many have really tried out what they make videos about. I was curious about this one though. In the end, I would put up an A-frame really, and tighten it down as needed. Thanks for the input

@muddytigeroutdoors4790
@muddytigeroutdoors4790 8 лет назад
The geometric one is doable considering that the headroom is very limited because it's lower to the ground towards the back of the configuration, that plus having a stick or a pole right in the middle make it a bit challenging to lay comfortably. Keep in mind that I'm 5'8" and my main tarp is 10x10.

@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 5 лет назад
So the basic geometry of this is your taking a square, creating four right triangles by running lines from the corners through the centroid (centerpoint). Then you take three of those right triangle and connect them to create a 3 dimensional shape. Anyone who has seen the movie Contact knows what I’m talking about. The remaining fourth triangle becomes your tent closure and then you put a pole in the center to hold the whole thing up. Now you have a shape that looks pretty big right? Welllll I’m not so sure. Consider the following observations 1. 25% of your tarp is used up simply to create a watertight seal 2 look inside and you will quickly see how little of that space you can actually use. The high area is very narrow. The most of the area along the edge is unusable because of the steep slopes and because it is an open bottom you would want to force the edges of the structure up and let weather in. The pole in the center cuts your space in half to fit YOU into. I’m not saying this is a BAD structure, just feel like I would like to see someone play around with it a little instead of seeing about a thousand videos showing the exact same thing and the only differences are the background and the host. I must repeat I’m not criticizing anyone in particular but at someone point peanut butter and jelly on white bread taste the same no matter how you cut it

Somebody tell me what I’m missing. You call it fully enclosed but it doesn’t have a floor; therefore snakes and rainwater can readily enter this fully enclosed structure. Why would one not have a floor in any tent either store-bought or a tarpaulin ?

I’m planning a thru-hike along the Appalachian Trail: 2,100 mile, 6 month trek. A tarp would definitely be cheaper and lighter than any tent. But, I was wondering how well you think it would hold up to such rigorous use? How well would it protect from the elements with daily use? I’ve never heard of any thru-hiker trying this, but I am curious about the potential. What are your thoughts?

Look up Joe Brewers Channel. He is a triple crowner and used his DIY Silnylon tarp for both the PCT and CDT. Same tarp. I made a tarp for a guy doing the PCT last year, but he shacked up with a gal most of the time in her BA tent. I used the Membrane 1oz and would probably not do that again, but the design was sound. I have a video on it. I would probably use a Silnylon with the ripstop. If you look at Big Agnes and Nemo, they are both using a 15 denier Silnylon and they are surviving. I am guessing only one thru-hike though. If it were me, I would use at least a high quality Silnylon, maybe a very high quality Silpoly. It is really easy once you have done it a few times and get your system down. I don't do fancy set ups anymore like this video. I will just do an a frame with trek poles. Up high for normal, down tight for storm. The key is the size. My 11oz thru-hike tarp, I have a video, is long enough and wide enough to handle the crappy weather fine. I have tried smaller and it is possible but you are really tight.

Oh what do you think of the SOL bivy in terms of using it as a cheap over-bag under a tarp at night for lightweight camping?
@naturecallsoutdoors
@naturecallsoutdoors 6 лет назад
I love my SOL Bivy. I got the breathable one and have it with me always in the winter. Great kit addition. I have used it to augment when I hammock in the snow and the rest of my gear isn't making it. I did find it a bit small as an overbag and resort to using it in the bag. I do treat my bags every year with a waterproofer though. Have you used one?

No I have not used one.

You mentioned it had rained and I think right there you missed an opportunity to enhance your video. I think a good percentage of people look forward to the sound of rain on tarp.

Thanks, nothing quite like rain. It was a pretty miserable night really, November rain and not a fun shelter. I will do a good rain vid soon though.

Its not fully enclosed. YOu forgot a floor. GO to Far North Bushcraft tarp 4x4. There is a proper fully enclosed tarp. Also on my channel.

You are correct to a certain extent. The main reason I did this video was so many make a tarp set up like this and call it what ever you want, no one ever tests it in real conditions. My point is to show someone who actually goes out into the wilderness, sets it up in rain and cold weather and sleeps in it. I found in all practicality I would not use it or recommend to someone to use it, even if it did have a floor. Not concerned as much as to the nomenclature. Thanks for the comment and will check out your channel.

+MI Timberwookie You caught me. Wasn't as comfy as I usually am, but it was close to when I was 8 years old in a crappy for in the backwoods. I did have a very enjoyable fire for a few hours too.
