So as an example, imagine boss swaps are negative EV, but they increase how fast a run concludes. This means it's probably good to boss swap the first few runs in a streak but then not boss swap later. But if a boss swap is purely +EV without downsides, that's the play. (Also, not to get too bogged down in the statistical reasoning here, I think the main issue is that boss swaps aren't always +EV compared to other options! The data you have that says boss swaps are good were not randomly assigned, so that adds bias and may make boss swaps look better in the data than they actually are.)

I think you're right. We can think of it as: Boss swap simply pushes the probability check earlier up the line, so it doesn't change the raw odds differently in a short or long streak, but it could affect streaking experience through time taken. Variance of streak length isn't affected by the variety of win rates from boss relics a priori, you would just know/suspect the run result earlier.

I kind of agree with what you are saying, but I think maybe the *actual* argument that Baalorlord is arguing (perhaps subconsciously) is that the win% of a run is dependent on player skill. You can think of the win% (aka Expected Value of a win) of each run to be: P(deck_strength × skill > run_difficulty). A skilled player like Baalorlord can tolerate a poor run by playing carefully, use potions wisely, etc; whereas a bad player will need stronger deck/relics to carry them, hence the higher benefit for boss swaps (which increases the deck_strength significantly unless you draw busted crown in which case deck_strength decreases a lot). That means a boss swap could result in higher EV than not swapping for a bad player, but for a stronger player boss swap will result in lower EV than not swapping, due to the formula I listed above. Higher skilled players go for longer streaks and lesser skilled players go for shorter one (e.g. some people will be happy just hitting a streak of 1). This means longer/shorter streaks is more an implied acronym for skill level. In other words, bad players don't win easily under normal circumstances. They need to rely on boss swaps to give them a better chance of winning even though sometimes you get screwed by drawing a bad relic like Busted Crown. Meanwhile, strong players are less reliant on boss swaps and can navigate the bad card rewards/floor layouts/relics better and therefore don't benefit from boss swap as much, while they still absolutely get killed when they get a bad boss swap relic. There are probably other ways to look at this phrasing as well.

I think also, player skills is not a fixed quantity for the same person. Even a player like Baalorlord will not always play at peak skills as he may sometimes decide to just play fast, or in a more relaxed fashion instead of busting out a calculator and taking 3 hours for each run every time.

Decay's damage is blockable. The choice was "take no damage now, but potentially redraw decay and take more damage later" vs "take 1 HP and guarantee decay doesn't get drawn again."
