I finally did it, and I finally feel good enough to use it too! I'll take those name suggestions, and tips on how to hold the draft up during weaving. There's no way i can memorize this pattern! Thanks for hanging out with me!

My grandma was 97 when she passed. Her and her best girlfriend from childhood, married their husbands raised many children and eventually became widows. I remember them laughing and giggling like 16, knitting, crocheting and making baskets. Their hands were never idle. My grandmas little fingers were nearly transparent with large knuckles and a ring that spun freely behind it. They remained friends until they passed not far in dates from each other. My grandmas name was Dorothy...but I always loved her friends name..Harriet. The best women, i learned to cook,, bake, knit etc. Anyway I love Harriet as a name :)

have your husband make you a warping board. really simple. it'll save so much money and you'll love it. i divide my pattern into easily workable sections and then put them on post its and hang them across the top of the loom. i keep track of involved patterns with pennies. move them as you complete a pic. you're going to have so much fun.

Hmmm.....hardworking and a little temperamental...Liza? I am still learning my wee rigid heddle loom, and I will be looking for a weaving glossary to understand “tabby” and “overshot”. I’m glad you’re having fun with the process!

I have a friend who is a fiber artist, and she weaves and free-style quilts. She tried to talk me into getting a floor loom, but I couldn't get past the price!! So rigid heddle for me. She would bring her 22" (6 or 8 shaft) table loom to some craft shows where they let people demo their craft. EVERYONE would come over to see what she was doing, and she would let a few very interested try their hand at it and weave some. I like to think she got some people started in weaving. Really nice pattern Trish. Love the colors!

This is beautiful, I love your colours! I don't have name suggestions for the loom, but I may have some tips for the draft. First thing, the pedals. I give them numbers, from right to left: 1 to 6. I tie the pedal 1 (far right) to shaft 1 and 3, and the pedal 6 (far left) to shaft 2 and 4. With those, I can weave tabby. Pedals 2 to 5 are tied like this: pedal 2 --> shaft 1-2, pedal 3 --> shaft 2-3, pedal 4 --> shaft 3-4, pedal 5 --> shaft 4-1. As you are more comfortable, you can change the tie up however it is more efficient. Second, the conversion of the weaving sequence (from top to bottom). This is where the pedal tie up makes sense. Instead of using a grid with squares when weaving , I use the pedal's number. If it is symetric, I draw an arrow up to save space. For example, if the weaving pattern is (a W-like pattern): Shaft 1-2 (+ tabby) 2-3 (+ tabby) 3-4 (+ tabby) 4-1 (+ tabby) 3-4 (+ tabby) 4-1 (+ tabby) 3-4 (+ tabby) 2-3 (+ tabby) 1-2 (+ tabby) I write instead: Pedal 2 3 4 5 4 (arrow up) Third, keeping track of the weaving sequence. You can write it down on another piece of paper and hang it from the castle top. If doing a long sequence, you can use a bobbypin of a trombone to keep track of where you are and slide it down as you go. Does it make sense?
@FiberLoveDiary
@FiberLoveDiary 3 года назад
Thank you for all the tips! Treadling seems to be fine, and muscle memory is building really fast, but keeping track of where I am in the draft has been a challenge, because this one is so complicated.

Love the pattern and your colour choice 😃. What I do when I cross stitch with my pattern is I laminate it (I have to go to our library as they can laminate all sizes) so I can follow along I use a dry erase marker and draw a line across the area I just completed. It’s easy to stay on track and clean off so I can use the pattern over and over. I hope this helps 😊

Looks good so far Trish! I was gifted a 70 year old four shaft floor loom that is completely apart with minimal instructions to put it together. The price was certainly right but it’s taking me time to wash down all the wood and get the rust off everything. I have three more shafts to go and the back warp beam and then I’ll start assembling it. Sooooo, I’ll be back to watch you with yours because I’m sure I’ll need lots of instruction to figure it all out. In the meantime, good luck with yours! I know you’ll be a pro in no time!

Omg, I clicked on the link to see what the pattern was and I have the same warp, for the same towels on my Harrisville! All I've woven on that one is the header, because I have too many looms going at the same time and i got distracted by spinning and SE2SE and fell right done THAT rabbit hole. LOL! I have a neat metal clipboard I bought a few years for using with knitting patterns and it works so well for complicated weaving. I clip the pattern to the metal and use thin strips of magnets to move through the design. Also, I highly recommend getting some boat shuttles. It will change your life. :)

John is the MVP 🏆 I love watching you weave! My brain struggles to grasp how but maybe one day I’ll give it a try. In regards to keeping track of the pattern I wondered if something like a sticker chart/dry erase board chart might be helpful? That way you can mark your place as you go along. You could attach it to the edge of the chart you have to make it easier to see and follow along? As for the naming what about Angie? A sweet looking lady with a lot of layers who can be a lot of fun as long as you play by her rules. Ready to get to work but also maybe stress you out a little 😂 Hoping you have a wonderful week ahead Trish!

You may have already gotten this in other comments but I keep track of where I am on the draft with a small sized sticky note. The ones about the size of a large postage stamp. Especially useful in overshot when you’re counting how many pattern repeats. Another way to keep track of where you are is when weaving tabby is to throw with your right hand and press the right tabby treadle, throw with the left hand and press left tabby treadle. I’m glad that you went big with trying overshot out of the gate. I think it’s actually pretty easy to do, but the directions seem complicated. Get some boat shuttles. They are much faster and easier to use.
@FiberLoveDiary

One more thing the boat shuttle bobbin I saw you could use a plastic straw and when winding it you build up higher at each end and then fill in between and I tried this it works great also my husband make a loom catcher look on my blog for that too it looks like stretcher for a very skinny person I sewed the cloth for it but it holds the shuttles instead of your lap that helped me a lot too and in time you will want more boat shuttles I use other stick shuttles on my rug loom and little bertha

My mom (medical professional) always tells me that skill blocks like that happen when we don’t have the neural connections we need to do the task at hand. The way to forge the connections is hard work, just like you said, but also sleep, because that’s when our brain takes inventory and restructures accordingly. I don’t know how many times I’ve given up on something after giving it my all, only to pick it back up a day of two later to find that it’s way easier suddenly. I’m sure that rest is even more important after covid!

That is so interesting. I always tell people to practice, but to do shorter sessions and come back the next day because I believe we continue to build muscle memory even in between practice sessions without the frustration 😂. Thank you so much for telling me there is science behind this!

Someone from my local weavers/spinners guild offered to sell me their floor loom, but I’m not too keen to try to lug it up to my 3rd floor apartment. I think I’ll stick with my rigid heddle for now 😆

I really think that's one of the pluses for rigid heddle. They are so easy to move and store! Plus, if you really felt pulled to a floor loom, you would probably not mind lugging it up, so that feeling tells you it's not time to have one in your life!

@@FiberLoveDiary oh definitely! I’ve gone full tilt into rigid heddle, then spinning soon after. I think I’m booked!

Yay she's a beauty 😍. I purchased iWeaveIt from playstore for Android, they also have an apple or pc version. The add on (also purchased) has a threading and treadle tracker, which is super helpful. Not too expensive and easy to chart the patterns.

Hi Tricia, You might like a Book by Myra Wood about Crazy Shot. I think it is mainly for the rigid heddle but she has great information in there. Congratulations on your floor loom. Also to keep your place in a pattern there are magnetic boards available which I used to use for my cross stitch.

You got a floor loom, yay! Can’t wait to see what you make with it! I use the iWeave it app for tracking threading and treadling (well lift plans for me since I have a table loom). Well worth it to me. I know there are other apps, too.

The first name that came to be was Carmen. Weaving makes me think of gypsies and you can’t deny that she was hard working and temperamental!

Greetings! Thank you for sharing your weaving journey. While I was watching your video, the name “Beatrice” came to mind even before you mentioned her not having a name. Also, for keeping track of the weaving, I use an old cribbage board. If the pattern repeat isn’t too long, I use thin tape on the side edge of a cribbage board. This allows me to use the score peg to move along the pattern. I sure hope that makes sense.

Is loom envy a thing? And your husband deserves new towels - camo colored. Naming pieces of equipment is tricky I can't wait to hear what you decide.

I've got something for you to try - go to your closet and grab a yarn that is about double the weight of your tabby yarn. Try that for the pattern instead of doubling up the tabby yarn. The reason this might work better, is your threads are linear, and will lie next to each other in your woven piece. Does that even make sense lol....I'm at a loss of proper words today. In other words one round fat yarn will take up less linear weaving that two thinner yarns (even if those two thinner yarns twisted together appear to be the same weight as the fatter yarn. To make this make more sense...wrap your tabby yarn around a pencil to get accurate wpi. You are looking for a yarn that is fat enough to wrap and get approximately half the wpi. Give that a try for a few inches and see if you are closer to the measurements you are aiming for. Loveya.

That totally makes sense, because sometimes people ask me why I double the warp yarn for dishtowels on my RHL instead of just buying something twice as thick. I want the diameters next to each other. This is kind of the opposite of that, so it makes perfect sense to me. Thanks!

I've only woven one overshot piece but I found the key to getting the pattern to come out the right size is a really tight beat. I also use a program called iweaveit on my ipad to track both treadeling and threading. I hope this helps.
