@D. Steven The point is that having a stupidly large amount of jobs is pointless if those jobs pay sweet F all. As an example, I could hire 10 people out of work to clean my house for $5 a week. As far as the job market figures are concerned 10 people are now in work and unemployment is down, despite there being no way in hell that anybody could live off $260 a year. In fact unless those workers expand their workload or get a 2nd+ job every one of them would still be on government top up benefits no less than if they were unemployed.

@@robjohnson7878 I only visited Boston, New York and Chicago in 2016. These cities did fine as far as I could see. But America is not fine. You have enough money in the country but the distribution has to many flaws... Our system in Germany isn't perfect either, but better in almost every aspect. At least for 90% of our people. We don't call it socialism by the way. We call it social market economy. It's a capitalist system with many laws that protect the poor and weak. That means you can become rich, same way as in any other capitalist country. But if you employed you get maternity leave, that's 14 weeks on full payment where you're forbidden to work (by law), everybody has health care, you have AT LEAST 24 days of paid work free days each year, many big companies give 30 days off, all on full payment. I don't care if Americans call it socialism. I prefer our system and I myself am an entrepreneur with 10 employees whom I have to pay all least 24 days off 😁 Every year. BTW I have no choice. You know what... Bret Stephens said the EXACT reason why a large portion of older liberals and Democrats DO NOT LIKE Bernie Sanders. He's right, those countries have very high unemployment right now, and there are a few better examples. With our current systems, maybe a healthcare system like France (All Medical Insurance companies and Medical Insurance branches MUST be run as a Non- or Not-For-Profit portion of the business and must cover any and all procedures an insured person has to go through, minus an "acceptable" copay up to a maximum) would be the best. I'd love a single payer system, but that could gut a large portion of the economy. This compromise seems acceptable to me, and heck, Blue Cross/Blue Shield for most of its history WAS a Non-Profit, until the 90s when it could no longer compete since its premiums were higher. And that's just one issue I have with Bernie's platform.

Even the social democracies with high structural unemployment such as Sweden and Finland are way lower than 10%, at around 6-7%. @chris bleau That's a bit too generalized. I live in Germany and I must say our system works quite well. If you don't have a job, you get enough money to live (but barely, it's definitely not the most desirable position to be in) and you also need to attend training programs regularly and verify that you either are actively trying to get a job or are unable to do so due to e.g. health reasons, or your social benefits will get cut. The system does not aim to let people have a lifestyle where they sit on their ass while others pay for them, it tries to prevent people from falling into irreversible poverty and help them get back to being a valuable member of society. Also, statistics show that immigrants tend to be more "profitable" to the state than the average citizen. I understand that it can look like these "socialist" policies might lead to exactly the problems you are describing, but if they are implemented reasonably, they won't. These policies are very easy to criticize if you oversimplify them, but it's never about just handing out free money to people who don't deserve it.

Addressing a point Brett Stephens brought up in the main episode; yes, there is some antisemitism on the Left, _way_ on the fringes, _BUT_ "All about the Benjamins" is not some antisemitic code-word… it’s a 1997 song by Puffy, and there was a subsequent _movie_ by that title as well. Rep. Omar made a playful shout-out to Old-School-hiphop, when referencing money in politics. In case you didn’t notice, she’s black, she might know hiphop. It’s a mini-shout out to people who get the damn reference, like the people in her constituency! I have heard, and I have _used_ the phrase “All about the Benjamins” _at least_ a dozen times since 1997, not _once_ was it about Jewish people. Maybe it’s not a phrase used in neoconservative, 2002 pro-Bush, drumming up the Iraq War circles like Brett Stephens’ crowd, but like the know-nothing neoconservative he was back then-who rushed to tell the world what to think, he shouldn't rush to superimpose Antisemitism on Rep. Omar’s reference just because he doesn’t know what the fuck it means!
@stellashepherd844
@stellashepherd844 5 лет назад
Rush P. But Omar was using a cliche about money to talk about Jewish people. I don’t think she meant this but it was taken to reference that Jewish people only care about money which is a common antisemetic trope. I wish she would just be straight forward instead of clever twitter quips which can be easily misinterpreted. Like tweeting at Passover that Jesus was a dark skinned Palestinian. That’s debatable and a subject historians and theologists debate about. It’s also an argument made by the PLO to try to delegitimize Israel. Given that Jewish people are facing hate crimes all over Europe and America that was a strange thing for her to tweet on Passover. Bottom line she has legitimate problems with the actions of Israel and PACs that influence our politicians. But maybe don’t tweet so much using antisemetic tropes and digs. And don’t deny that they are. Once you can call a misunderstanding. More than once, well, don’t piss in my ear and tell me it’s raining.
@GloogleGloigle
@GloogleGloigle 5 лет назад
Wendy Pastore - Hello Wendy, regarding Ilhan Omar’s reference to the “the Benjamins,” the cliché would _not_ be about Jews loving money, but about _American politicians_ being influenced by money, and _as you say,_ this _is_ a legitimate issue, and she’s absolutely correct on this point. I looked up the Pesach tweet though, and it wasn’t an original tweet by her, but a retweet from Omar Suleiman. The news outlets that were pushing the narrative that it was _her_ statement were CBN, Fox, the Jerusalem Post, and other “reliable” Right-wing news sources. Oddly, not _one_ of those sources picked up on the _main_ part of Suleiman’s original tweet. His post was about how the position of the Christian Right in America, supports policies oppressive of Palestinian _Christians_ living in the land, by not allowing them to visit Jerusalem during the Pescha celebrations. He added a throwaway point that Jesus was Palestinian. This is plain wrong, and I disagree with it; Jesus was Jewish... although the notion of Jesus looking more Sephardic than Ashkenazi, has some validity. That’s a point I bring up all the time to White Supremacists Christians, who say Jesus was white, when Abraham himself came from Ur in modern day Iraq, and Jesus most likely had olive skin, like all his Jewish forebears. Here’s a link to the article that Omar Suleiman tweeted for more clarity. 972mag.com/easter-gaza-permits-blockade/141104/ Edit 1: “Pascha,” not “Pescha” Edit 2: “Mizrahi,” not “Sephardic”

Rush P. I agree with you l but I suggest she shouldn’t have retweeted that. It was at the very least irresponsible and uninformed but I suspect, given her history, that it was meant to be provocative. It makes me look back at her denials of intentional antisemetic rhetoric with suspicion. The news outlets may have been pushing that it was her statement but I don’t think that’s the point. The point is she chose to retweet that on Passover. Why? Because she has an agenda and she was thoughtless.

Brett Stephens needs to look into the history for each of the people he named, Castro whether we like it or not did what was Best for his country at the time. He was able to do to the United States something that no other leader from a Latin America Country was able to do; kick them colonizers out of their country. Reason why Che Guevara is still a legend today, the ideals which their revolutions brought to many countries in America helped out many indigenous people. Americans seem to forget that all United States did was take advantage of Latin American countries so they would stay under their power, afraid that 1 would ever rise against the 🇺🇸 communism seemed to make more sense back then, especially for countries that were under USA’s control or had been. Russia’s educational curriculum was the best back then; children spoke at least 3 languages with the help of Lenin’s Government ideals For context, Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera were big fans of Communism because it was the type of government that would of helped the Mexican people at the time.

Bill told Gov. Inslee he drives an EV, but then asked about the pollution from his electricity. I would have answered like this: "But Bill, you don't have to use dirty electricity. LADWP (Bill's utility) offers 100% clean wind and solar energy as an option. All of your viewers should immediately switch to their utility's clean energy program, or if you are fortunate to have a good roof for solar, installing a PV system is a great investment." I would follow with: "And like Bill and myself, all of your viewers who drive gas-burning cars should, as soon as possible, switch to en EV. The average American spends about $2,000 each year on dirty electricity and gasoline. Bill's audience is about three million people, so that represents $6 billion that Bill's audience gives to the oil, coal, and gas industry each year. Switching that money to the wind and solar industry would make a huge difference in political giving."

ScootMagoot46 - The importance of the state-level [and below] executive experience for a presidential contender is overblown. The exception is if the state has a huge budget, and their state’s policy drives national policy, like California’s does. Otherwise, yes, it’s important to not lose focus on that level of government, because, that’s the level where gerrymandering takes place at, but otherwise, unless you’re _living_ in that state it’s not that important. A successful Texas Governor might favor his state by deregulating industry in the state, to attract businesses, to steal jobs from other states. It basically hurts another state, pollutes their own state, and lowers the wages of workers in the industry overall. Most governors’ solutions don’t create jobs; they steal jobs and hurt the nation. They don’t educate in a way that promotes innovation, and when their deregulation hits the fan, taxpayers from other states bail them out. You can’t do that as President, but as Governor, you might have a great run. On top of that, even if someone is a good governor, the job of governor doesn’t prepare a person to deal with the level of issues that a President has to deal with. National legislators however, already deal with the same transnational and domestic questions, at the executive and cabinet levels, on a daily basis that a president does (defense, diplomatic relations and foreign policy, intelligence, federal law enforcement, transnational crime and partnership with foreign law enforcement, oversight of all that, international trade, domestic policy at the national level, executive oversight & protocol, money for national emergencies, money for international emergencies), and they already know the faces, and have a working relationship with the people they have to negotiate with/work with from the other side of the aisle, in order to get policy passed.
