Overtime | The Martian (2015) Scene

In this scene, I enjoyed the byplay between the NASA Administrator (Jeff Daniels) and Mindy Park (Mackenzie Davis). Vincent Kapoor's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) quick little cut in is nice as he is trying to gauge how she is doing with a seat at the table. Also, of course, Bruce Ng (Benedict Wong) is great with the delivery of his final line in the scene.
Twentieth Century Fox owns the copyright to this movie.

I always liked the portrayal of Jeff Daniels' NASA Director - he is straightforward, knows his stuff, but listens to the experts when making decisions. Everyone he talks to at NASA and the JPL are top of their respective fields, but he provides the big picture viewpoint to convert that genius into a focused effort to get Watney back. I love the casual way he says "I'll find you the money" - as if that isn't going to involve weeks of begging, threatening, and cajoling every possible source of income that NASA has. I also think there's a reason he specifies four minutes when telling Mindy Park to adjust the satellite orbits. It could be that he just pulled a number out of thin air, but I imagine he either a) did his reading and knows that this is close to the theoretical minimum for that number of satellites, or b) chose a number that was short enough that it'd be impossible to miss the most important activities, like loading equipment onto the Rover.

The rocket ship blowing up always confused me..... I know they explained it in a news conference shortly after the failure as to why, but haven't they launched multiple rockets successfully in the past? Surely they use past experience to make that one a success as well. Yes, I know my comment is quite basic, but don't I have a point???
@Michael.032
@Michael.032 10 месяцев назад
@@tonychan8558 Launching a rocket is never a surefire thing; there are too many things that can go wrong every time. Yes, they've launched many before, but their rush to build the rocket means that they can't cover all their bases and completely minimize the odds of an issue appearing. Imagine trying to cook an extremely complex meal that you've cooked many times before, but now you have basically the minimum possible amount of time available to cook it. You're constantly multitasking and don't have the time to spend double and triple checking that every ingredient is well cooked or well mixed, so you kind of just have to hope that you did everything correctly. And in this case, something small went wrong (in the analogy, say, part of the chicken was undercooked), and that caused the whole rocket to fail.

0:30 She's extremely hesitant to admit that her missing something is a possibility as she knows more than just her job and livelihood are on the line, but once Teddy gives her full command of orbital adjustments and she has a chance to correct any possible mistakes on her end, she immediately reaffirms why she deserves her position. Her "Okay." is extremely confident, like "Yeah, no problem. Easy money." That woman is very, *very* good at her job.

Well, I am fairly certain that her feeling portrayed in the book is quite the opposite. Not saying that an adapted movie always has to follow its original text, and maybe I was influenced by the book, but I felt nothing but her nervousness and having no idea how to accomplish her assignment when I watched this scene.
@PJOZeus
@PJOZeus 11 месяцев назад
@@prelan1340is that what was portrayed in the book? She seemed unsure of her position here, perhaps you could call that nervous - and she was worried she hadn’t done her task as well as she could have - but once she’s given the authority, that “Okay.” is a “well I wasn’t bloody expecting that but I vow I will accomplish this quest”, kind of smacked between the eyes but with a little bit of promise in there too
@prelan1340
@prelan1340 11 месяцев назад
@@PJOZeus The text from the book, chapter 8: “I want that gap down to four minutes,” Teddy said. “I’m giving you total authority over satellite trajectories and orbital adjustments. Make it happen.” “Yes, sir,” Mindy said, with no idea how to do it. And some other contexts that came along with the lines above: MINDY GLANCED nervously around the conference room. She’d never felt so thoroughly outranked in her life....Mindy felt a pang of envy as she watched the director of media relations. She was everything Mindy wanted to be. Confident, high-ranking, beautiful, and universally respected within NASA... She tried to ignore the lump in her throat. Perhaps I failed to read the connotation between the lines: I just assumed that she had no idea whatsoever when the job was assigned. However, as I said above, it's fairly certain that movies do not always have to follow the original text, and the actress here had full liberty to portray a figure slightly different from the text.

The persistent stereotype of a high powered executive who doesn't really understand how anything works, but compensates for it with inspirational gems like "make it happen people" and "failure is not an option."

Even if you are an expert or start out as one, as you lead more people, its impossible to understand how everything works and thats why you delegate, trust your team and then make calls with the best info you have. This isn't a stereotype, its just executive leadership.

It was far more compelling see Matt Damon's character problem solving on Mars, so the fantasy fell apart for me once the film descended into scenes like these, with countless no-name characters chatting nonsense in board meetings about unions and worker rights, it didn't mesh with the sci-fi subject matter and all the tension and focus they'd built up around Matt Damon being the sole survivor on Mars just evaporated.

@foxfireman188-ls1kv Yes I can see the validity of that, and it's true Watney needed the folks back home to get their ducks in a row in order for him to get back. But the problem-solving stuff was really fascinating and would've held up for almost the entire movie for me. More drama on Mars, less on Earth. I remember the feeing I had in the cinema at the start of the second Matrix film when the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar exited the ramp and entered Zion and you suddenly realised they were all part of a much larger community. At that point a lot of the magic that had been created around them being these awakened renegades fighting against the AI disappeared for me. But of course they wouldn't have been able to do what they did without people in Zion. Perhaps in both cases it's inevitable and necessary, but the narrative transition does remove the tension that's been created, for me anyway.

In the next 50 maybe 100 years when we can successfully will "The Martian" be a guidebook on how to prepare for possible problems in Mars mission. Such as: have a secondary backup site on Mars for store x amount years of food for a emergency, also have multiple boosters rockets on Earth for emergency launch of personnel or supplies.

This is practically stupid thing to do the reason they limit the supply because of the cost it will bring.

About rocket booster, IRL SpaceX can launched supply cargo to Mars everyday when contracted so the disaster like in the movie will never be a problem. And Elon will send Starship to Mars for extraction.
