modern pop is almost entirely based on styles and conventions that ultimately trace back to the blues (rock, soul, disco, hip-hop, house, etc), which itself developed from west african music brought to the americas by enslaved africans. so the relationship to blues and soul is closer than you might think. in the big picture, the entire canon of western pop music is basically a subgenre of some specific african music traditions
