Great refresher from last year. I did this last year in zone 5A and brought in 11 plants. Only 4 survived. The strongest survivor was the Burning Bush hot pepper. The King of the Norths, and many Jalapenos didn't make it. I had outstanding hot and sweet pepper production this year from my starts and my freezer is so full of Jalapenos and Aji Rico hot peppers. I thought the starts produced faster than the few survivors of the overwintered peppers. This year I will compost and start fresh in the spring. Great video.

I moved peppers and tomatoes into a makeshift greenhouse just before first frost. They haven't frozen, though the heaters weren't able to keep up on a couple of 27 degree (F.) nights, and it got down to perhaps 45 degrees in the greenhouse; mostly I've been able to keep them above 48-50 degrees, 60-65 during the day, and over 80 the few hours of sun we've had (I opened the GH or used a fan the few times it got too warm). Looks like all the tomatoes are dead or dying, although the Sungold is still slowly ripening a few tomatoes. It's now Jan. 4, and the peppers are looking cold stressed; some are still ripening fruit, slowly, except the Jimmy Nardello's, which doesn't seem to know it's winter and has a small crop ready for me now. I mean to try pruning the peppers back as you say, SO THERE ARE NO LEAVES LEFT, maybe root-prune and repot anyone that's now in a pot too big to move, and put them in my basement until next spring. WITH NO LEAVES DO THEY REALY NEED SUPPLEMENTAL LIGHT? Would they actually begin to grow back, over winter, under 5,000 K + high-intensity fluorescents, so they already have leaves when you put them out in the spring? Or do you want them leafless until you put them outdoors.? I would just as soon not spend money/carbon on electricity, if I can make them go dormant, without light, until it's warm enough to put them back outside? If they need light just to keep them alive, even without leaves, how many hours a day, minimum? Very little light? Or??? I understand lumens at inches, and color temperature. ... Could you guess, if I brought it into the house, how many hours of light that Jimmy Nardelllo's might need to keep producing peppers? I wonder of a 9 watt LED reflector--60 watt equiv. so maybe 800 lumens--a foot away would be enough? Also, if the tomatoes have lost all leaves but the stems are still green, is it worthwhile to try to overwinter them, using the same procedures as the peppers? This is an older RU-vid. Hope you're still checking and responding: I need your help! Thanx! J.O.

I wish I could say that I have had success with overwintering peppers. My timing is always "off" when I think of doing it. My plants are too stressed from overnight temps that fall below 10C combined with waning sunshine. I believe more gardeners should take this step in their gardening adventure. I could rattle off many of the benefits and shortfalls with it but will acknowledge that the pros outweigh the cons.

Noticed some of plants u showed had significantly more lower branching than others and thinking back to your topping video wondered if those were plants u topped last season. Ive found the plants with more branching bounce back the fastest and seem to survive more readily than plants that have a long stem before the first Y. One note I would add...noticed there was still some dirt in the rootball when u transplanted...like to rinse mine completely clean and spray with neem & diluted hydrogen peroxide to further minimize potential pest/aphids moving into the house...

I like how you do the visuals in your videos. One of these days I'm going to try that. The problem I have is where to store them. I watched your original video of this, that was very good too! Right now I have 12 rosemary cuttings taken up space that I could have used for about 3 pepper plants. Maybe next year I can figure out a space in the barn with added insulation around them so they don't freeze, I don't think 50 or 60 rabbits generate enough heat lol. But, maybe covered in straw? What do you think? Enjoyed! Take care!

I'm growing my hot pepper plant indoors (it's actually doing surprisingly good, and it's currently still growing fruit). Since my apartment clearly won't drop below 15°C, do I have to prune or otherwise prepare my plant for winter? Since it's close to the southern window, it should still be getting a fair amount of sunlight, but it'll obviously be less than in summer/autumn. Other than that, I do assume that I should try to ensure that it doesn't touch the window, to prevent frost damage on the leaves. Great videos btw! Since I only live in a small apartment, I unfortunately can't implement many of your tips (or grow many plants in general), but I still find them interesting.

I did this one year with strawberries on reccomendation and they all died. Can a pepper plant not be overwintered with foliage?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
Strawberries NEED to go dormant....never bring them inside...growing for 365 days is not part of their lifecycle. Peppers can be overwintered with foliage, but they transpire more and are more susceptible to pests and disease with all their leaves.

Gotta do this today for my banana peppers. One thing i'm curious about is how much light do they need? They're going in my dad's garage, but the only light it would get is from the overhead light when he goes in there, which means like 99.9% darkness. I have a spare low power grow light and a timer but not sure how much to give it to not have it try to grow. EDIT: Ah, you did mention it, I missed it at the end there.

I gotta ask, because I would love to pull this off :) This past season I successfully overwinter a Salvia plant ( Rock’n Deep Purple) using terracotta stakes with wine bottles for slow release watering. I’m definitely feeling empowered because it worked fabulously! Now, I’d love to try with peppers. It was in a room with a heater set to keep it above freezing. It’s an old block home that we use for storage, freezers and such. It warmed up naturally and started to grow at the perfect time to raise plants from cuttings to plant outside at just the right time! In the case of pepper plants I could bring them down to my grow room and put them under lights. But, when? Do you think they’ll break dormancy at the right time, much like the Salvia did? Anyway, sorry if I’m bugging ya, I’m get pretty excited over all kinds of gardening stuff. 😃 Thank you!!

Two questions for you: first, how do you know if your pepper plant has survived the transplant process for overwintering? My plants look like a bunch of dead sticks at the moment and I don't want to have to baby them all winter if there is no hope for them. They may have had a touch of frost before I had the chance to bring them in, so I am not very hopeful. Secondly, will the pepper plants be okay with the extra inches of soil around the stem? Will they grow new roots from the stem like tomatoes do or will the stem rot? I thought you always had to keep the soil level the same.

@carrieunderwood3298

Strawberries are winter hardy and shouldn't be brought in. I have a very large patch of June bearing variety. (About 70 x 20 ft) As soon as they are finished producing, I mow them down with the mower platform set to max height. This chops off all the old leaves but doesn't hurt the crown. Next I rip out plants to create some paths and also pull some, (the oldest looking plants) in places that have become too dense. At this point the patch looks like crap. About a month later, everything looks great again with tons of runners filling in the gaps and paths again. In early spring I throw on some 10-10-10 fertilizer. My yields are huge. Hope this helps.

Do u feed the plants at all? Like with more potting mix or no
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
No, not really. The potting mix is fresh and will have some extra nutrients, but definitely no direct fertilizing.

One of of my two overwintered peppers survived last winter- I enjoyed jalapeños all summer from it. I have several in my garage going this winter, which is 40-50 degrees. Will they survive that temp do you think? Space is the issue so the garage is what I’ve got. What do you all think?

My pepper plants we're stunted by crappy ground soil. One of my Peppers is very tall with the Y at the top. I don't want a super tall bell pepper plant. So what to do in my case? This one pepper plant never produced but grew flowers many times. Will grow them in 5g buckets next year. Thanks

Replant the stem lower......bury half of it. Even adult stems. Its a nightshade, it'll produce stem roots, no problem...just like tomatoes!

I live in a temperate climate but I'm just about over, overwintering peppers. They're so dependent on warmth. Mine are so darn slow to get going again. 😪
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
Yup.....I live in a cold area too. I'm finding that though that there's LESS heat and electricity and input involved with overwintering the adult plants than there is starting over from seed again and again every year.

Could you please tell me where you get your garden straw. I can buy full size bales but they have lots of wheat seeds in them. They are full size straws so are not the best for mulching. I use it to cover my grapes over winter. I am from Red Deer AB. I like your videos. They are full of helpful tips. The only thing that bothers me is that green hat with that S on it. Would look better in red with a big C on it. Have a great day.

Ha ha GREEN is always the color my friend..... ;-) The straw seems to be best sources locally. I don't know of any shipped across the country. I get mine from a local feed barn....that's where I'd start. Pet supply places often carry it as well. I've even seen Home Hardware carry it!

What is the pepper solution for bugs?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 10 месяцев назад
Mostly depends on the bugs. For soft bodied ones a natural soap/vegetable oil spray seems to work best.

I deeply respect this author, but don't recommend it. I did it last year. Brought them into my basement grow room, where I also grow orchids and other unusual plants. Soon the plants, and nearby plants, were covered with aphids. Tried to treat. Ultimately tossed them out. A lot more grief than buying a seed pack for next season. If you must try, I'd advise spraying the plant with isopropyl alcohol and soaking the potting mix with hydrogen peroxide before you bring them in. Both are highly effective for insect pests, neither leaves a residue and will not harm the plant. But now you've spent more than the cost of a seed pack.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Hi Carrie, I can see where you're coming from, but I feel like its a blanket statement. That's like me saying " this one time I tried to grow a tomato in a pot, but it dried out, therefore no one should ever ever grow tomatoes in pots".....Ha ha, well, maybe not that general, but I hope you get my meaning. Yes, I totally agree about the pest thing....I mention it right in the potting section.....and its a great point. Because if you do get pests inside like aphids, they just go CRAZY. There's no natural predators to keep them in check, its a disaster waiting to happen, like you said. But, often peppers can be brought in to a garage or other section of the house that doesn't have dozens of other plants. Or, they can be doused with natural insecticidal soap to thoroughly clean them. In the end, I agree and disagree with you at the same time.....because getting a pepper to adult, flower/fruit bearing size is more than the cost of that seed pack! Unless you know of a way to grow peppers without water, light, soil, or a container! :-)

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Again great respect for you and your videos. And I didn't say don't do it. Just a caution. I think it would have gone well if I'd treated with the alcohol spray and peroxide before I brought them in. Peroxide works great for pot dwelling pests and actually delivers oxygen to the roots. Good growing to all.
