Presented by Jade Simon of the University of Toronto, April 14, 2022.
When you see a dinosaur in a museum, do you ever wonder whether it was a teenager, a baby, or a full-grown adult? How do palaeontologists figure out how old a dinosaur was when it died? Jade Simon studies growth and species diversity of Oviraptorosaurs, a group of enigmatic feathered, bird-like dinosaurs from the Cretaceous of Asia and North America. Her specialty is osteohistology-the study of bone under the microscope. In this talk, Jade explains how cutting up fossils can uncover some of their most interesting secrets, and how histology can be used to help palaeontologists reconstruct dinosaur diversity.
