CLIVE: Another dense, layered Murmur track. With Pilgrimage I faced the production challenges of Radio Free Europe but Pilgrimage fell together much quicker. A common occurrence on Murmur is to have the bass piano echoing what the bass guitar is doing and this couldn't be better illustrated than on this song. Missing from this cover version are the vibes that Mitch Easter were reportedly playing throughout this song. Other than that I'm fairly pleased with how this cover has turned out.
ROB: While I can’t claim Pilgrimage is in my top 5 REM songs, I can declare definitively that it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded by the band and one of the main reasons I fell in love with REM. Pilgrimage and Pretty Persuasion were the two that did it for me: the interplay of vocals and complementary melodies along with the shimmer of Peter Buck’s guitar. Those two songs alone made me shake my head and question why no one around me (at the time) was as dumbstruck as I by how amazing this band was-how brilliant and how moving. As for our cover, look-I’m not Mike Mills; I’m not Bill Berry; and I’m certainly not Michael Stipe. All that said, this was fun to sing. If anything, working on this cover made me realize there’s a harmony on both the “take a turn” and “take our fortune” lines in the second chorus-a detail I never paid much attention to until now.
