Most people rely on the car to show them how much range they will get. But is you have range showing on the screen, the number is a lie. In this video I talk about what that number really is, and how to show your actual range.

dump the tesla ev anxiety, ev epensive repair costs will wipe out all your ev savings 3 times more than petrol ice cars, ev are worth paying only £2k because of expensive repair costs when it becomes faulty

Go 65 mph and don’t have the AC on full blast and you’ll get more miles than advertised. Same logic applies to gas vehicles. Logic being the key word.

@@austinpowers1999 I dont agree with that. In my fossil cars I never managed to get WLPT figues. Only while driving on a country road with going max 50 mph in the mid 20C outside while not stopping once. Nor using AC. In my EV car I can achive WLTP range . On warmer days even below. On winter days not a chance. But I drive like a granny to achive these numbers. Back then I did the same granny driving with my fossil fuel cars. Never achived WLTP numbers. My driving consists of 60% city and 40% country road driving. I think this contributes to the advantage of an EV. If u drive the car faster. Like on the Autobahn. The WLTP range goes down the drain. Worse than with fossil cars.

Excellent video, I've been using the trip screen on the energy graph for years and I've always found it super accurate. So much so that I never get range anxiety even when it says I'll arrive with a very low state of charge.

I rented a M3 last fall and drove it about 200 miles one day up into the mountains (Sierra Nevada, elevation 600’ to 7000’ and back). I had it navigate to 3 or 4 points along the way and the estimated charge at destination was spot on every time. Very impressive that it includes calculation the effect of elevation changes. I own a Nissan Leaf and it is pitiful at estimating remaining range.

Absolutely- it’s precise to a tenth of a percent. The guessometer in my old 24kWh Leaf? Precise to 10%. Maybe 🤔 😂

Excellent explanation. No over complicated calculations, just straight to the point and clear. Sick of seeing vids with people bashing Teslas and EVs in general without any understanding of how range works (in ALL vehicles). I’ve driven all over the UK in my Model 3, and NEVER once ran out of charge, just as i NEVER once ran out of petrol or diesel in previous cars. FILL UP when you need to, or even better FILL UP before you need to, then carry on. If you drive around like a boy racer and don’t give a F what you’re doing then you will feel range anxiety. If you drive like a normal, responsible road user (like everyone should), then you will get to and from where you need to without worry.

To be fair I have run out of petrol a couple of times - dodgy fuel gauges in both which over-reported how much was in the tank. Happily one of them was up a hill with the filling station at the bottom, so… 😱

I did love your average consumption screen of 299wh per mile (@6.10). I thought it was me and the way I drive that only averaged 3.3 miles per kWh. Thankfully I’m not alone .

Excellent YT ! I drive a modx100d scince 2018 and I use only that screen exactly which you are showing ! Its absolutely accurate. I confirm it over the time. Its a great feature no other EV have to offer. In 2018 I was driving the X100d sometimes a bit "cracy" you know ;-) So I was able to bring down my 470km range easy to 150km... By giving a few AMG´s and Porsches a feeling of what EV´s are about :-) A bit childish and expensive (Tickets) back than but lot of fun. Now I am using the EV performance only if I do want to overtake. My range is still 410km after 196kkm .

I don't get why Tesla get bashed so much for this - every car, EV or not, gives widely inaccurate range displays. And as you say, it's not Tesla's figure, it's the mandated test figure.

Yep Honest John website with real mpg shows an average of 82% of quoted figure, which is just a government test. I think worst is the Volvo D60 hybrid, claiming something like 156mpg. Returns 32% of that, or in that order of magnitude. No suprise, the test only has to run the battery long enough to pass the test.

Agreed, it's just confusion over interpretation. Most other EVs range mile display is a "guess-o-meter"... shows "real/projected" range based on current driving/conditions. So , it's a bit more like the Tesla nav estimate, but ONLY for "fixed" conditions (eg still driving flat, not later uphill.... that would give rude surprise for those EV folks.) Other EV drivers don't know Tesla is "fixed" standard efficiency range, not recent/real... they should really just switch to %, and rely on the nav to project real arrival % given expected conditions for that specific route.

The comedy comments come from people who bash EVs. I’ve done a couple of comparison videos vs diesel using my lived real world mpg. Backed up by Honest John. And they say no - diseasal always gets 70mpg at any speed in any condition…

My diesel Audi takes the longest average consumption and calculates, which is very accurate for most situations (unless I drive through mountains…); my Tesla makes ALWAYS the wrong calculation as it doesn’t take in account nothing else than the saved average Tesla says it is the correct and the usable battery. What is correct: if you set a destiny on Tesla’s navigation system, the prediction IS very accurate (unless you drive too slow or too fast)

Good explanation, but what I don’t understand is why Tesla won’t program the projected miles on the main screen to match your driving. Why continue to show the projected miles based on a hypothetical test rather than adjust it for actual driving?

My 15 year old Mercedes E Class diesel and my lwb camper van, both have highway ranges of 650 miles brimmed. I never have to worry about re- fuelling on route, ever. I go to a supermarket when I am at my destination, conveniently, when I need to. It generally costs around 15 p per mile on a run. I only ever use my EV around town, tethered to it's octopus home charger range, with it's 33% degraded battery, after 8 years and 40k miles from new.

Great well presented factual video. with a petrol or diesel mpg estimate is only based on last journey , so can be totally in accurate and “Range “ can in fact increase while your driving.

Sometimes I wish Tesla would simply remove the option of showing miles on the battery gauge. People would complain, but then they’d adapt and ultimately be better informed.

I think a key thing to explain with EV's is that as they are so efficient (ie about 90% efficient vs car at 40% efficient), the energy loss due to external factors is much more pronounced in EV's. Ie in petrol/ diesel cars, a lot of energy is just lost by having the engine actually running (even without moving anywhere). The range loss in petrol/ diesel is therefore a much smaller proportion of the total energy available. Another way to think about this is the most efficient speed to drive a petrol/ diesel car is about 50mph. Any slower and the proportion of energy used by just running the car outweighs the range loss due to aerodynamics etc. In an EV the most efficient speed is probably closer to 20mph. When you get to highway speeds the difference in energy use is likely a lot different at 65mph to 75mph.

Very helpful. If the system can so accurately display the arrival battery % why can’t it just convert that into an approximate miles you would have left? Would seem more helpful to know I’ll have 40 miles of range when I arrive vs 13.45% battery.

I know from experience with my previous Tesla that it's always variable, depending upon weather, climate control, speed, headwinds, tailwinds, road conditions, vehicle load, elevation change, etc. And one's previous driving pattern figures into the range estimate with most EVs. For example, in my Ioniq 5, with an EPA rated 260-mile range, I've seen a full range extrapolated as low as 221 miles and as high as 354 miles. The good news is that you can improve your range by pre-conditioning the car before leaving, using seat and steering wheel heaters instead of heating the entire cabin, driving at or a little below the speed limit, etc.

Ian, you are absolutely spot on with this. I think it's awesome how accurate tesla gets their arrival battery percentage on navigation when you reach your destination. Tesla is a brilliant computer on wheels. Your saying "Just get a Tesla" is so true, especially if you want better than what other car makers can do.

I think that is the EPA range which is a bit more precise. A recent update improved this calculation as well due to EPA requirements changing and an adjustment to take into account the battery health.

Ian, having driven from Melbourne to Perth and back in my M3LR, which includes a 1000km drought in fast chargers crossing the Nullarbor Plain, I agree with what you say here, but for the WLTP comment. I believe that Tesla now use the slightly more realistic EPA calculation in the car (as distinct from on the website). But your point on the Energy Consumption app cannot be emphasised enough. It is easy to set out reading plenty of “range” to spare, only to check the app and find you are “not going to make it”. But that is only “if you keep doing what you are doing now”. The app is brilliant at forecasting how modifying your speed will improve your range; you can literally slow down until it predicts you will make it. Stick to that, and you WILL make it. Incidentally, it will even display what effect the currently prevailing wind is having (+/- and how much). The app is also brilliant at demonstrating the effects of turning off AC, opening windows, etc.

The Model Y RWD has a WLTP range of 283 miles, an EPA range of 260 and of course real world is dependent on a lot of things. I have the same car and it shows 260 when 100% which is not the WLTP figure but the EPA figure.

Mmm there is another way ... A lot of EVs give an estimated range , dependant on outside temperature, previous driving habits etc ... While not perfect I have found my Hyundai Kona Electric to be a fairly useful guide. I know some manufacturers have various degrees of success with the Guess Omiter approach , but the Hyundai and Renault EVs have always worked pretty well....

The car always shows EPA, it never shows WLTP, the manual makes that clear. Using the historic range is also not a guide to future range, and that varies a lot especially if you’ve say pre heated the battery on the way to a supercharger.

Well, I have documents saying WLTP because Europe does not use EPA as we’re not American. But let’s take your US (?) Tesla. EPA range is not real range. All copies of the manual say that - I have checked a few. So what’s your point?

A simple check - work out your range at 100% and compare it to the EPA and WLTP quotes ranges. You’ll find it very close to the EPA range

Only thing is that figure in the % field is not wltp in a Tesla it’s Epa, which ironically is more accurate than wltp but it is a set rate

I think in Tesla the display shows the EPA range, the American version of the WLTP. They only show WLTP on the Tesla sales website.

I think Teslas sold in Europe and UK use WLTP, Teslas sold in USA and Canada use EPA, and Teslas sold in China use CLTC. It would be strange to use a standard from a different country.

Don’t worry, you can all carry on with your illusions, or do some investigation of your own. Point of sale is one thing, and the car display another. Next time you charge to 100% check your display, does it match WLTP?

Ian, do you understand why the ‘instant’ figures are different for the different distances (30 miles, 10, 5 miles). Seems to me that instant is instant but it isn’t!

The car mostly uses "recent behavior" for the "instant" charts on Energy app (specifically those 5/15/30 miles), not so much for the navigation trip ones... I think. It DOES adjust the navigation Energy trip estimate, as you drive... and faster than the overall nav turn-by-turn directions display.. you can always open the app while driving, and see if your curve is above the projected line (good, using less energy, more remaining) or below (poor, using more than projected)... it also shows green=good, orange=bad using more than projected under the curve, very helpful. That way if say you hit a headwind, or are driving unusually faster than it expected (or slower, due to traffic), you can instantly see any time how you are doing. Sometimes that adjustment can get out of whack, if eg you are driving uphill, even though it knows elevation, sometimes it gets more pessimistic in my experience... just wait til the other side. In the end, the nav WILL be pretty accurate for you or anyone driving, especially once you get into the drive and it confirms your driving style/speed/conditions. It's a good idea to double-check the energy app and/or the nav arrival % prediction, while underway, to make sure you still have safety buffer on arrival, especially if conditions change or are poor, or you are very far from chargers... you can then adjust your driving (slow down) if safety buffer gets too low for comfort, or stop at a closer charger. If you pay attention to the nav , it is very rare you would run out of charge, unless something unusual happens .

What is your source or reference for saying the range figure at the top of the screen is WLTP. I have a 2021 M3 LR with 47k miles and it will typically show 305 miles as 100% with a linear rate of decline.. this matches with the approx 70kwh battery and my average use of 230w/mile. I just also got a Highland LR and as delivered with 10 miles on the clock and at the tesla centre 99% charge = 299 miles. So in neither case are these WLTP figures. So it would be helpful to explain why you think this is the case.

Tesla advertise everything in the UK as WLTP. There's a bit of debate about whether they use EPA for the mileage display - both are similar. Either way it isn't live as the manual makes clear. Key point: don't obsess about range. Your car is not broken if you get less range than advertised...

I contacted Tesla UK and they said the indicated range is an estimate by calibration coming from both how the car is being driven plus how the traction battery is being utilised ( I assume charging behaviour ) - they also said it takes approx 3 months for a new car to fully calibrate. So it is not the WLTP.

Only with an aftermarket tilt and swivel kit but well with that in my opinion.

I believe it’s more motorized in Model S and X, but 3 and Y still have a rigid screen mount. Several companies make tilt swivel mounts.

No. However, I've driven a Model 3 since 2019 and one thing that I always appreciate is that the sun NEVER reflects off the screen into my face, nor does the sun make the screen hard to read. I have however driven many other cars where the dashboard reflects badly into the back of the windscreen making it hard to see through. This doesn't happen on the Tesla either, the worst car that did, and I've had the misfortune to drive was a Kia Ceed.

@@peterwilliamson1825 Curious because that's exactly the reason I fitted a tilt/swivel mount. Sun catching it and it being hard to read. Factors that influence could be as simple as time of day driving, season of the year, height of driver.

It is a bit daft showing wltp range on the front screen when the car knows a more accurate figure as it's displayed on the different screen . It has no benefit to Tesla doing this as a all it is going to do is confuse and probably disappoint the owner . if other manufacturers do it that doesnt make it sensible or right. i could understand it using that if it was the only data it has but it isnt.

The problem is the car needs to know the route you’ll be taking in order to accurately predict energy consumption. A battery gauge has to work even when you haven’t specified a destination.

Yes, I think it’s this. Always use navigation and it will measure to 0.1% how much power you need. It can’t do that if you don’t navigate

Why is it that WLTP is always at least ~30% off on electric vehicles, while on petrol/diesel it's much more accurate? I've owned five petrol/diesel vehicles and they've all - over a period of a year or two - been within ~10% of the WLTP numbers. Isn't it scammy for the manufacturers to basically lie about how far their EVs can go on a full charge?

Manufacturers are legally bound to use WLTP numbers. It’s not a scam it’s just not a realistic enough measurement. But when you start driving a Tesla you don’t worry about range. I don’t miss ICE even though I drove them for decades.

It stikes me you don't actually know what the range at the top of the screen represents. It's not wrong, its proxy for battery capacity, normalised for the cars efficiency.

It’s literally WLTP in Europe, EPA in the US etc. which is wrong unless you drive exactly like the test…

@@justgetatesla Hi Ian. I filled my iPhone 13 with over 100GB of video on my trip to Adelaide SA. It has been a nightmare trying to MOVE files onto an external SSD on my Mac (even following so called experts on YT) :-(

In older EVs like my Leaf, sure. In other EVs? Maybe. Not is Tesla. If it tells you that you’ll arrive on 31%, that is accurate

My god. What happened to just getting in your car and going? You used to just look a the fuel gauge and stop at a service station when you neeeded to, knowing you'd only be there 5 mins most times. EV drivers seem to border on the obsessive, because everything they have to do is about conserving energy, military style route planning and where the next stop to charge will be. This is ridiculous.

We are considering switching from an electric car to petrol or diesel. I have some questions to see if it really suits me and my family and hope someone knowledgeable can help? 1. I have heard that a petrol car cannot be refueled at home but I have to go to a special place for this? How often do I have to fill up, is it several times a year? Will there be options for refueling at home? We are used to the car being filled up every morning, as sort of by itself. 2. Are there many parts that need to be replaced? The seller said something about oil and filter change, gearbox, timing belt and other service. Do you see how many percent degradation you have on the wearing parts or will they break suddenly? 3. Do I often have to brake with the brake pedal, or can I accelerate and brake with the same pedal as in my current car? Do I get gas back into the tank when I brake or go downhill? 4. Do all petrol and diesel cars have much slower acceleration? I test drove one yesterday and it felt like it took a very long time from when I stepped on the gas pedal until it reacted. Maybe there was something wrong with that particular car? 5. We now pay $0.02/mile but with the petrol it will be about $0.13, even if the new car is cheaper to buy it will very soon cost more. We drive 15,000 miles per year. We hope that more people will use petrol so that the prices will go down... is there such a trend? 6. I have understood that petrol and diesel consist largely of oil. Is it true that the extraction of oil is associated with global environmental problems and widespread wars with absolutely terrible consequences for people around the world, including several world wars and trouble in the last 100 years in which tens of millions of people have died? Is there any solution to that in sight, we don't want to contribute to such crap, do we? 7. My son also heard that petrol cars emit fumes and toxic gases. I’ve read about air pollution and its impact on respiratory health. Are we contributing to that by switching to a petrol or diesel car? Will these pose risks to our health and the environment? ... have more questions but these are the ones I came up with now. Thanks for all the help!

dump the tesla ev anxiety, ev expnsive repair costs will wipe out all your ev savings 3 times more than petrol ice cars, ev are worth paying only £2k because of expensive repair costs when it becomes faulty
