I just bought mine. 2012 X5 35d. I can't believe how well appointed a car of that age is. It's 2023 and better appointed than some brand new cars. I am PUMPED about the M57 engine with twins.
The best part of the video is how you merged. You checked to your left, had your signal on, and most importantly you ACCELERATED to MATCH the speed of traffic. I give it 5/5 stars!
You don't have to get run flat tires, there's room for a spare in the back under trunk. Changed my moms to Continental tires, night and day difference. Quieter, better ride, better handling. She has the sport package so even less sidewall.
Dear sir/madam I have been researching and am interested in buying a used BMW X5, my preference is a 7 seater, the second generation (2011 after the facelift). In my research, I have come across a rather intriguing issue regarding the specifications of the vehicle, concretely the weight and the dimensions. The official dimensions and weight of this model seems to be the following: 4.84x1.98x177 and 2.237Kg, respectively. However, I have come across some versions, mainly from Singapore, with very different specifications. In those versions of the BMW X5, the dimensions and weight are: 4.87×2.19×1.69 and 1.804kg (around 400kg less than the previous referred weight).
I agree, the Nav system is sh*t. I use a $200 Garmin system stuffed against the windshield instead. The Garmin tells me local speed limits and distance to go to destination rather than distance to next turn. And I also have the sound off.
moon naza I have the same one just fully loaded all the pkg u can get and it's 2013 but the engine and almost every thing is the same it's one of the best cars I ever owned love it u will not regret specially with that diesel engine is amazing and it really powerful for a suv good luck to you
Hey ma im looking into getting one of these in the coming months(USED), ive read very MIXED reviews. Pretty much my main question is, are the repairs allot of $$ and does it break down often? or what can you just tell me over all.
Freddy Medina an X5 repair, especially with the diesel, could be pretty expensive depending on what it is. I haven’t had any issues with mine and the diesel powertrain has the capability to last hundreds of thousands of miles. I’ve heard of sensors going bad and needing to be replaced, and occasional random stuff (I know a guy whose pano moonroof stopped working). But everything is going to be more expensive with a BMW-oil changes, filters, other routine maintenance etc. however the build quality is very good and despite expensive maintenance and potential repairs these things will last a very long time.
I have the inline 6 gas model and love it but I purchased a warranty so I didn't even have to think about it. good thing I did to as my engine ended up developing a rod knock at 100,000KM. the new engine was imported and cost $25,900 all together. now I have a brand new engine with 0KM. Will keep it till the warranty expires and probably buy another. great cars just either budget for repairs or the extra cost of a warranty. the diesel is much more expensive to maintain but is known for its reliability, the gas model is known for its cheaper maintaining costs and relatively known for its reliability you just suffer on gas more. I get about 11.4L/100KM or 20MPG with mostly highway driving. this is my third BMW X5 and I got the 3.0i in my two 2004 models and now the 3.0SI in my 2008. I'm definitely considering the diesel for my next one though....
The Test Driver, thanks for uploading this video. Ironically, I am interested in the same exact car, truck as you call it lol. Also with same cinnamon brown inside and black outside, I see black on black everywhere, but brown inside and diesel were two things I was looking for. So, I located one at $18,900 at 69K miles here in California. I am coming from a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid with 220K miles. Meaning, I take reliability for granted! My highlander will not let me down, period. And it is easy maintenance. Nonetheless, I always wanted a BMW ever since I was 15 lol. I don`t have a thing for sedan BMWs, need a larger SUV, and I can`t afford a new one, so the exact same 2012 X5 you have is my favorite. Btw, I rented a 1 series diesel (118d) in Italy, which is not available in U.S, it is a little hatchback. I drove it for 3 days on and off, and what I burnt cost only 20 euros / 25 bucks at most. I love the diesel engine sound, reminds me of Europe. I don`t know if I will go for it, maintenance scares me. Maybe, buying extended warranty is a must. Hard to break out of a Toyota reliability. Looks suck, drive quality is so so but nothing like a BMW handling. My other option is a Mercedes GL 450. I didn`t do full research but Mercedes quality is probably better than BMWs. It is just that GL series, or Mercedes in general is a 45+ year old car. Need a BMW lol..
semprefidelis76 I love the X5 especially the diesel. I used to have a diesel Jetta and that’s when I fell in love with owning diesels. You’re right that Toyota/Lexus are very reliable-I know so many owners that have put 200-300k miles on their cars. But these diesels can last a very long time as well. The only X5 issues I have seen other people have are random stuff (moonroof stops working, etc). Maintenance is definitely more expensive (I made a video about how much an oil change costs) and when you have to replace the DPF every 120k miles that isn’t fun. But it drives so well and looks awesome. Sounds like a good price for the one you found!
The Test Drive - Thank you for your reply. Ya, before I could even act on it, the 2012 diesel black / brown X5 sold right away! So, I am still in the search for a diesel. I perfectly understand when you say that these diesels are designed to last a long time, and if anything breaks, it would more likely that electrics, things like sunroof etc may stop working. Still, coming from a super reliable 2006 Toyota Highlander w/ 220K miles, it kinda scares me. Yes, diesels are quick, nice torque. Actually, what I really want is the 2014 model, as it has the new body. My budget is $20K, nothing under $20K yet, maybe next year lol. These Euros drop value pretty quick. I am also curious about the X7 that will come out, not that I can buy it lol. But it will help X5 prices go down in my opinion. Nonetheless, if I lose some weight and get in shape (you make the X5 look pretty good :) I am gonna reward myself. Have a good NY day!
By the way, generally, these cars are few thousand K more expensive in the West Coast. When I look at the prices on Autotrader, there is at least few thousand dollar difference between NY, PA, CT vs California. So, if I find the right car, I am willing to travel w/ one way ticket to East Coast, buy the car and drive across country. I am assuming, this would help the car retain its value a bit when I wanted to re-sell it in CA. I hear quite a few people do it these days.
Congratulations on purchasing diesel BMW! By now you probably know more about settings in navigation menu where you need to select Dynamic mode and turn the screen into split mode to view your oncoming turns. As far as tires go I have Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 which are made as replacements for those that want to eliminate run flats. They are very sporty handling with almost no road noise. It is strange that you do not have spare tire since you do not have 3rd row seats. Most of X5's have spare under the lid if they are not equipped with 3rd row seating. The passenger seat should not beep unless you load 80lb on it so I would take it to the dealer to look at your sensors if you have an existing warranty. Next time you try to get impressed with 0-60 mph switch to the sport mode on the shifter, you will probably gain additional 1.5 seconds, and if you want to gain 4+ seconds with additional HP/torque then you would need to go to JR Tunning stage 2.8 ;) This SUV/SAV is blast to drive. So technologically advanced vehicle. Now you know why it is called "The Ultimate Driving Machine". Good luck!
@@KoreHelsinki Man coming from the N54 platform the information seems very sparse though. Can't find any popular tunes for it seems like everyone has a different tune
I have a 2012. It came with a spare. As far as the nav, just go into the split screen menu and it has the map on the left, and turn by turn on the right. You can choose to have it talk to you or not.
I bought mine used and the guy that had it before me did an engine tune up on it. The dealer never told me exactly how much horsepower it was outputting but me and a guy I work with got 0-80mph in roughly 4 seconds. That tells me it has to be around 350hp. I would like to have it dyno'd at some point and see for sure because this thing is QUICK. For an I-6 it throws you back. I'm extremely happy with this vehicle and i'd recommend it to anyone. Not too often you see a V6 turbo diesel in a BMW. I got the black rims with the sapphire black paint so its the black on black. Its definitely a head turner at red lights 😂
Goraknath Ramalinga I rarely go on highway or interstate. It would extremely easy for it to get 27-30 without a doubt. I've only gotten up to 25 so far, but like I said, i'm mainly in the city. If you're driving at about 60-70, it's averaging about 25-30mph.
Body on frame design. Like a truck... Most cars & so called SUVs are now unibody set ups...A truck cannot be unibody as it is not a strong enough design to withstand "truck work". The X5 is built like a truck.
I had a 335D sedan and switched the Michelin run flats with Michelin Pilot Super Sport (non-run flats) and the difference was night and day. The ride was much smoother, steering easier, less road noise, and the cost of the tires was about half as much. I think they were lighter as well so less unsprung weight/rotating mass. I mainly used the car in town so I wasn't really worried about flats and had AAA for trips. For me the regular tires were really the way to go. The grip was much better as well.
There is a way to get the split screen to show you next/upcoming turn info. This video looks like it's for newer models, but I think your iDrive will still be the same. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q88BA0uMvrc.html
I've had my 2012 X5 35D for just over two years now. It 57K on it when I got it and I've put one 20K in the time I've owned it. A few things I don't like about it are the voice recognition sucks so I don't use it. I l live in FL where its pretty flat and we have 70 MPH highways, my average highway speed 80 MPH and I've never gotten more than 23 MPG even with mostly highway driving. Mine didn't come with run flats, I guess the original owner swapped them out. I've had to replace all 4 tires, I have staggered rims didn't replace them with the run flats either. It's a diesel so you'll have to do more maintenance than a gas engine. My seats are not sensitive so you should get it checked if out.
Sheldon S I've only used the voice recognition a few times. Agreed it's not great but works if you really need it. The nav also makes some odd route choices sometimes but that's probably due to the age of it more than anything. I've gotten 27-28mpg highway but only if I really take it easy. Usually I drive 80mph and get around 24mpg highway, but that's pretty good for such a heavy SUV with 425lb-ft of torque. I've gotten used to the idea of run-flats as nearly all BMWs have them now. Unless you purchase a spare. Thanks for watching 👍
Freddy Medina I do my own maintenance so it's not too bad. I've had to replace one of my o2 sensors $500 from a dealership in NJ. My local dealer wanted 780 plus 220 for labor. You'll have to do more maintenance on the diesel version but overall it has been a reliable vehicle
Hey I’m really thinking of getting 2007 2008 X5 but diesel.. but i also have in mind the Toyota prado 2003 04 05 06 diesel. What u recommend Toyota or bmw? I wanted to ask about the X5 mpg 23 is really low for diesel.
@@bangorsix1576 the Toyota would be more reliable. I never saw more than 26mpgs when I had mine. The Toyota should also be less expensive to maintain. Hope this helps
You should be able to choose what the smaller screen can do by pressing option when that side is highlighted... I thought something was in there that could tell you what your upcoming turn was.

You could probably buy a 2nd hand seat bucket (without the belt) and clip that in on the driver side every time you want to place your laptop on the seat. #cheapfix.
@@sarkismjalli8408 No its not. My position on these things(car purchase) is this: if you can't pay cash for a car then you can't afford it. Period. I'm quite mechanically inclined and fix all my vehicles myself. I've worked on BMW and they are at the top of the list of horrible cars to work on. And that is not just my evaluation of that, many mechanics will tell you the same. It used to be that they made them well, now they are cheaply made. Many parts are substituted with cheap plastic and break quite easy - replacing them is expensive too. So, no, its not worth it. Not financially, nor for for experience of having one. But, in the end its your money, waste it how you see fit.
@@DontBowToEvil i know what you mean I've been told that by a lot of mechanics but I've had my 2009 x5 3.0 for 6 years and everything has been great (i take my family every weekend on long trips and it's my wife's daily driver). But i don't like to drive cars like hondas and toyotas i have my own mercedes ml 2006 for 4 years which also i was told it would be expensive to maintain but everything is okay. Finally i respect your point of view since you're a mechanic and you know better than me if course but these suvs (bmw audi merc) are what i like
@@sarkismjalli8408 :-) well, to each his own. I respect your choice. You know, I'm an immigrant - been in US little over 20yrs. My 1st car was Toyota Camry, and i really wanted to get a Mercedes at that time. Payment would have been $450/mo. On my way to dealer I heard on a radio guy talking about power of compound interest. Turned around, decided not to buy a car, but opened a mutual fund, car fund, and put $450 that i would be paying for that Mercedes in that fund. Five yrs later i had enough in there to buy a car cash, fully, and then some. Decided to keep driving my camry and keep putting that $ there. I still drive that same car, with my car fund close to half a million. At the end of the day, its just a car, point A to point B. But, knowing that I can easily buy 6 of these BMW's, cash, without breaking a bank is priceless. I wish you well, sir, and your family.
@@DontBowToEvil Your a wise man sir.Im in a similar boat not in investing but in thinking.Prefer to drive something japanese and maybe switch to something i can afford the service/repair costs later on.It is after all driving from point A to point B
In Europe we don't make trucks. Truck is called only big pick ups like VW AMAROK. BMW and Mercedes make more sufisticated vehicles as the one you drive. Please don't call X5 a truck. It is just luxury SUV. In US many SUVs are based on Pickup truck platform. In Europe we don't have even one example for this type of vehicle.
I was going to get an xDrive 35d but I went for a 2018 Toyota Tacoma instead. I previously drove a 2011 BMW 335is, the wife drives that now. Sometimes (a lot actually) I wish I went with the X5.
