-----------
Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual. Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.
There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, and more.
Domesticated exotic pets include domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.
We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

This video doesn't mention that captive lemurs may get defanged by people that bought them so they don't bite people. Anyone that is against declawing should take note of this.
@Maspets
@Maspets Год назад
Defanged animals can absolutely bite, it's just the canines that do significantly more damage.

I have been reading about lemurs for months now but not out of a will to own them. They are endangered animals and often critically so. They also are not like some house cat that you can easily keep. Lemurs have their own particular way of life which does not include humans. They belong into the wild or at least sanctuaries where professional conservators can care and support them in their way of life. The Duke Lemur Center would be a good example for exactly such an effort. And unsurpringly, they also speak out against owning one as a pet just as anyone who actually works with lemurs in conservation, studies, field work or something else in academia. I really love lemurs and this video just invokes so much disgust in me.

The US should not allow the public to own these endangered and wild animals as pets. It exposes them to the vulnerability of abuse

That's some neat information! Maybe people could one day legalize captive-bred lemurs as pets (but never ones taken from the wild since they are threatened or endangered in the wild) for all those reasons you said in the video, as long as we have the right kind of food, enclosures, temperatures, and mental needs (social groups, etc). :)

They're incredibly dangerous and can maim their owners, much like Travis the Chimp. Especially Ringtails. They make TERRIBLE pets. And they have very complex emotional needs because they're as intelligent as 3-year-olds.

Wonderful video, thank you MAS! I wish more species of lemurs were available in the private sector. Only AZA zoos being able to obtain species that are rare in captivity is silly when many facilities can help increase the population successfully.

@@cooldude2251 the thing is that once a lemur is out of wild it can’t go back. People aren’t going to take them back to there habitat. It’s the same with any animal. People that buy these animals in reality are saving them unless they are abusive towards them. If the lemur doesn’t get sold they will either kill it or put it back in the wild where it will die because it wasn’t raised in the wild.

Primates are not pets. It's that simple. If you love lemurs, leave them in the wild or in sanctuaries.
@papichulo2736

I see where you’re coming from but I disagree. If someone has the proper set up for these creatures why not offer them a good life and companionship? Especially with their numbers dwindling in the wild domesticating them and selling them as pets will actually help keep their species alive and well. If there’s no demand for them or viewed as unimportant then what’s stopping people from destroying their habitat? I think human relationships with lemurs are the best thing that species could ask for. And yes of course sanctuaries and wildlife conservation is excellent too.

You mention that lemurs can become aggressive, which contradicts what you said about domestication. You claim there's no evidence that they can't not become domesticated, but the reason they become aggressive is precisely because of failed "domestication" and isolation from their own kind.
@cooldude2251

Right? The word domestication is pretty agreed upon. If an animal is prone from attacking someone while being hand raised, they are not domesticated.

Did you do any research on these animals at all? And guess what, ZERO lemurs are exported from Madagascar for pets in America. NONE, all of these animals are for conservation efforts and pet keeping. And NO nobody is saying lemurs should be an average house pet but by saying they shouldn’t be pets at all is depriving so many people of this, They are feasible pets. And what’s wrong with keeping lemurs as pets responsibly?
@alexone8338
@alexone8338 Год назад
They are endangered because of loss of habitat, hunting for consumption or illegal keeping or trading IN MADAGASCAR. They actually reproduce very readily in captivity (and not in the wild due to their reproduction conditions). Responsible and legal captivity is what could be saving the entirety of the species (and even whole genera) from going extinct in the future. If you want to be mad, be mad at those people hurting them and their environment in Madagascar, don't be randomly mad just because being anti-captivity is politically correct in your head. Talking about misinformation. 🤦‍♂️
