Thank you Stuart for sharing your knowledge / experience with us. I have secretly made you my personal mentor : ), I’m in the process of watching every single video you have shared with us here on your RU-vid channel… a lot of them I have watched in detail numerous times. I have been motivated into giving beekeeping a go by a cousin of mine in Portugal in my last trip this past summer. He keeps approximately 40 hives. Long storey short a lot of my 3 week trip was spent discussing bees with him and now I am hooked on giving it a try this upcoming spring; whenever it arrives as I live in Canada. Wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate you and hope we all have a great 2018 beekeeping season. Once again thank you for all the careful attention to detail you take in creating, editing of your videos, I find them exceptional.

This is a real coincidence. My oxalic acid has just arrived this morning. Just made my sugar syrup so once it's cool enough I'll be heading on down to the hives.

Hi Mikey, Make sure you're not treating the bees with cold OA syrup, a nice warm temp. will prevent giving the bees a shock when you dribble it over them. Let me know how you get on and how many mites drop. Stewart

Hi Stuart. The results are in and there was a massive drop off from one of my hives. I've posted some photos on the Facebook page. I was amazed really just how many came off!

Thank you so much for the video. Early January 2021 just treated hives with oxalic trickle method. Did a mite count and averaged 100 per day for each hive over 3 days as a rough guide. Have no idea though if this is the norm. Did treat in late August but had real problems with robbing bees from a neighbouring field which I suspect had not been treated resulting in the loss on 1 hive this wiinter.

Happy New Year too you to. Nice to see you back with new videos. Have you ever test Thymol? You can not use that in the winter time but at the bees active time. I have use it the last 2 years with good result. Maybe you should test it to summer and made a video about it. Best regards from Sweden and Roger
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Roger, Thanks for the message. I've used and tested various thymol based products, I'm sure there must be a video in the collection somewhere but it was a while ago. They are very effective and are an easy treatment to apply. Another treatment I have used successfully is Apivar, an Amitraz product and again that was effective. I'll update some videos this Summer for sure. Stewart

Do you have any thoughts on how soon you can do varroa treatments right after installing a package? I'm familiar with treatments but recently heard an opinion that people should treat a newly installed package. But I'm not sure how soon after installing is safe to do so when a new colony is so new and already vulnerable from a move and low resources. Thanks.

Hi Stewart, your RU-vid channel is fantastic, especially for new beekeepers like myself. I do have a question though, I somehow lost a queen (my fault, no doubt) and a friend promised me a replacement. After inspecting the colony yesterday, I found it broodless, I introduced the new queen, although she was still in the cage, the bees looked like they were happy to see her. I thought that now the colony is broodless, it would be a good time to treat with an oxalic acid trickle treatment. The queen came from a hive that was being treated with apivar strips, can I still treat with oxalic acid or would that be another big mistake?

Stuart, I cannot find anywhere that does the type of syringe you use nor can I find any empty Trickle 2 bottles in stock anywhere. Any ideas? I have had to individually fill a few 5ml syringes with the oxalic acid and sugar mixture instead but would like to get hold of the multi-delivery bottle. Thank you.

Stuart I noticed you only sprayed about 2 / 3rds of the frame. was that because of where the cluster was located? Or was there another reason?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi W.B., Good spot! Yes, you only trickle the treatment into the gaps where the bees are clustered, we call these "seams of bees" so with a colony that has a smaller number of bees you may only trickle thre or four seams with a total of 15-20ml of treatment. Stewart

Hello Stuart, there was lots of uncapped honey in supers at the end of last summer so I left the supers on over winter. Is it safe to apply oxalic via this method when supers are on? Many thanks.
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Ben, Really good question. Oxalic acid should not be used when there are honey supers in place or if there is a nectar flow on. So it's best to remove any supers that you are likely to use for storage of honey during the season. If supers are being used to provide additional stores overwinter then these supers should be cleaned out before reusing them to be certain they are completely free of any contamination. Stewart

Again thanks for all the videos you upload, I enjoy them. My question is what about your mite levels before/after the ox ac treatment. Saludos desde Chile ☺🐝🐝🐝
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Felipe, Thanks for your comments. I check the mite levels against a calculator on the NationalBee Unit website and treat if necessary. Mite drop levels are really quite high to start with after treatment and then drop off noticeably after a week or so. Stewart

How do your bees ventilate through the winter with a solid clear plastic inner cover? Looks like that would cause a lot of frigid condensation to drip on the bees. I live in Tennessee, maybe beekeeping is different here. Like your video though.

Thanks for the video. I'm a new Beekeeper. Thanks for the help. I was going to buy an Oxalic Acid vaporizer but they are very expensive. I have way too much money put into this new hobbie already but from what I read here in North Carolina the trickle method scares me to put moisture in the hive in the winter. Is the moisture not a problem?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Wave Rider, Thanks for your comments. You are so right about the endless drain on finances beekeeping can have but you can recoup some if not all with a good honey crop so there is light at the end of the tunnel! I don't think the moisture issue is a big one, for the trickle method the recommended does is a maximum of 50ml so there's not a huge amount of water going into the hive and I would imagine the bees respiration creates most of the moisture in a hive. Of course local variations will play a part and I would be guided by other more experienced beekeepers close to you. Perhaps you could try the trickle method on one hive and borrow a vaporiser to see how things go? Let me know how you get on. Stewart

Hi Stewart. I did the OA trickle 3 weeks ago. There was a massive drop to begin with and then numbers went down. It now seems to have crept up again (monitoring weekly)! Is this just more mites being shed (colonies were quite active in the sun this week)? I will continue weekly counts but is it recommended to do a second treatment or is this inadvisable? Pretty sure there is still little or no brood there. Cheers Dorothie
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Dorothie, Thanks for the comments and question, and thank you for signing up on my Patreon page, I really appreciate your suppport. What I have found with the OA treatment is if carried out to the recommended dosage you only need one treatment. The mites fall very quickly after treatment and the number that drop should continue to fall over the following days and weeks. You may find some additional mite drop with mites dying on the backs of bees and then not dropping immediately perhaps but I wouldn't treat again so soon with OA but rather treat in the Spring with a different treatment, maybe Apivar or one of the Thymol based treatments. Best wishes Stewart

Thanks for the video. Is OA one of the most gentle treatment methods when is comes to treating mites/bees? Is it more gentle than mite strips and formic pro?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 2 года назад
Hi Brad, I think so when compared to the types you mention. I does need to be perfor4med when there is no brood in the hive which can be a challenge depending on the time of year. Stewart
@dannybowman5053

Steward, what was the outside temperature when you did this treatment, and what is the mixture of Oxalic acid to water? One other question; I have one hive that is three boxes high. Do you do this for each box or can you apply enough solution to go to the bottom box? This Tennessee boy in America is fascinated with this approach to treat mites. Thank you.
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Danny, Thanks for the questions, I've just recorded an update video on the treatments and have answered your questions there. However, I think the outside temp. was around 6 degree C and the mix is 35g Apibioxal to 500ml light sugar syrup. One question I don't think I answered was the multiple boxes one. I don't normally have more than two boxes over wintered and for these I split the boxes and trickle directly into the centre of the cluster as they normally seem to form the cluster between the boxes. The a little more on the top seams of bees but only to the maximum dose recommended which is 50ml. Stewart

@richardrevett8242

Happy new year to you too Stewart. Would you use the trickle method during the winter as you have no supers on the hive and quick strips in the summer if you need to treat.
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 6 лет назад
Hi Richard, Thanks for commenting. The main time for using the oxalic acid trickle method is the Winter, yes. We're trying to find a period of near broodlessness so as many varroa mites are exposed as possible. It's a useful method for hitting varroa mites in the Summer with swarms too. MAQS in the Summer for colonies with brood yes, or alternatively, when there isn't a nectar flow on you can use a thymol product. Stewart
