Oxen Basics: How to Steer Oxen 

I’m amazed at how well they are trained. I raise a couple Holstein steers each year, and I sell them in the fall. It’s hard to part with them because they turn into pets. So I think next year I will just keep them as pets and possibly turn them into oxen.

This is interesting; such an ancient skill, yet unknown by so many. Yet, I realize there are more than a few places in the world where oxen are used.

Can you confirm or deny something that I have heard from my grandparents. Do oxen have a preference to be on the left or on the right? I have heard when a left ox dies you need to buy another left ox to complete a pair.

Any update on shoeing oxen or hoof care?

Always wondered why do they not use collars like draft horses on oxen, the yoke always seems to me like it would be mighty uncomfortable

Never been around oxen, seems inefficient, takes two people, one to operate the implement and the other to operate the oxen.
