Have you made contact with any of the profs in the program? Have you attended an Open Day? GET YOUR FACE IN FRONT OF THEM. Know who you want to work with and why, AND THEN CONTACT THEM AND MEET WITH THEM. Ask them how to make the strongest application possible. See if they have any other suggestions or recommendations. Dude, I did that and went from applying to a State U. in America to applying to *Cambridge* because another prof suggested it.

Jack, please do not fret. There are 100 reasons why you didn't get in, but there are 1,000,000 reasons why you deserved to get in. This only proves 1 thing and that is perhaps Oxford isn't right for you. But as you said, you have spoken in the Houses of Parliament, you are an author and you have been involved in so many amazing societies so whatever you do, you will become an incredible, inspirational person one day and one that I and many of your other fans already look up to. Nah, don't beat youself up about it dude. Places like Oxford and Cambridge are unbelievably picky not becuase they're so amazing but because they can be, they are pretty weird about it actually. I was told to apply there but I knew I wouldn't get in by their stupid standards and you know what, they don't know what they are missing out on. Same applies for you. I promise. your love for the subject will take you places. time will heal, and jack- you are going to be okay. and for the record. you didn't let us down from this. you just lifted us up. thank you. don't beat your self up. sleep and listen and rest. and lets do it again! thank you. Exact same situation for me. Cambridge was my dream since I was ten years old, I got rejected after being pooled and now I don't even have the chance of reapplication as my A-level grades will mean absolutely nothing. I thought 2020 was supposed to be our year!! Guess not. I mean to be honest I really even feel blessed to have had the interview experience although I believe I deserved a place so not getting one is heartbreaking. At least I've got Durham instead. Its been top of the league tables for English for the last seven years so here's hoping it will be even better than my old dream. Although getting in in this current climate might prove rather difficult. So, yes, I agree life is a bed of roses.

My daughter applied to Cambridge and had everything on paper that you might think would give her the opportunity for an offer. The two years of work she put into GCSEs and extracurricular was incredible, so when she was rejected, she was devastated. The emotional investment was enormous. She started to think, like you, "well, I'm going to apply for my Masters at Cambridge." Sometimes, I think it's easy to get fixated on the one university as the be all and end all. There is more to life than Oxbridge and so many people have been successful and not attended these institutions. Keep your head up and perhaps reassess why you want to go to Oxford.

This is exactly what happened to me. & it wasn’t even a prestigious university in Australia. I worked my butt off for a BA in Psych & Honours over 5 years, while working in the mental health field, I finished my honours thesis while having daily seizures, until my life came crumbling down when I didn’t get into masters. The final year to be a psychologist. My grades were excellent, extensive work experience and academic achievement awards. I completely fell apart, I mean, I am currently right now - falling apart.

This comment that you posted makes no sense. A lot of people give up on studying, just like a lot of people give up on rapping. They are both hard work. Becoming famous isn’t easy (sometimes luck comes into play if your naturally talented) and education/studying isn’t easy (unlike those who have parents and siblings to get help from an immediately understand problems and situations). People leave school, and people leave singing. Rapping and singing requires hard work also. Singing/rapping require songwriting creativity etc it’s not easy it might even be harder than education just to deal with all the hard pressure.

@Nicky L I kinda think it was good that they both got rejected, tbh. I think Jade just wasn't sure about the subject she was applying for, as she now says she does not even know what Major she wants at her current uni. And Ruby is very studious, but I do think that she would have had problems keeping up at Oxford, because she is not a natural genius and can only do so many hours of work, if that makes sense? So I do think that their current paths are probably much better suited to them.

Having been an undergrad at Oxford, I am telling you right now that you are not missing out on that much. The only thing you are missing out on is that brief, initial 'high' you get after you get accepted in. But once you get into the daily grind of the actual university, that high quickly disappears and you just feel 'normal' again. You also quickly realise that there are so many things in life that are WAY more important than whether you went to Oxbridge or not.

I know so many FANTASTIC academics studying at other Universities and doing absolutely incredible work - things that Cambridge would never dream of doing because most of its curriculum is stuck in the 20th century. No matter where you end up I'm sure you'll be amazing and have a fulfilling time. I know it's hard but please try not to base your worth on the arbitrary decisions of an archaic uni that gets so many applications that it can't make an informed decision on every one of them

The thing that baffles me the most is that employers do not understand one thing: Oxbridge is only excellent due to its history and research funding. That's it. When it comes to exams for example, I had harder time at a non-Oxbridge Uni, than my friends did at Oxford or Cambridge. I blame the employers and HR for this mess and destruction of students' mental health.

@Sara-ld6nh
@Sara-ld6nh 4 года назад
Zygimantas Adomavicius Sorry but that’s an outright lie. Certain subjects such as medicine are hard at all unis, but no one in their right mind would truly believe that non-Oxbridge workloads and are harder oxbridge. For example, humanities degrees at Oxbridge give 1-3 2000 word essays a week, whereas humanities at Durham/other Russell Groups give at most 4/5 essays in the entire term. A friend of mine at UCL only had 3 essays in her first term as a humanities student. So no, workload and exams are not the same between Oxbridge and non-Oxbridge - exactly why Oxbridge degrees tend to be valued more by employers.
@ZygimantasA
@ZygimantasA 4 года назад
@@Sara-ld6nh That's simply not true. Yes, at Oxford and Cambridge (law) for example, you are required to write weekly essays, however, at other Universities, you have weekly Seminars (usually 4-6) and for each of them you either have to produce problem question solutions or some kind of essay/analysis type of answer. So, not sure what your friend have been studying, but I could argue that some Universities have heavier workload for certain subjects than Oxbridge. The only positive in regards to teaching and Oxbridge is class sizes for Seminars (usually 2-4 people to 1 professor), whereas at most Unis it's 10-20 per professor. Another example, for law, for example, your exams are often double marked - 1 marker is internal and 1 external. My contract law exam was externally marked by a well-known contracts professor from Oxford and the grade was bumped up as a result. For postgraduate and PhD studies, Oxford and Cambridge are at the top, but not at Undergrad level.

Let me tell you someting: I'm from Germany and after my A-levels I went to England for a year. I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher at a high school (back in Germany). So I started to figure out what subjects I wanted to teach and I chose art and english. My absolute dream was to go to this amazing art academy which is one of the best in Germany. For my application I had to create a portfolio of 20 or more pieces of art in the formate A1 (if you don't have that in England I can tell you A1 is HUGE). I spend 5 bloody months doing nothing else that painting and sleeping, including mental breakdowns at least once a week. At the end I made it, I created 22 gorgeous pieces of art and until that point I didn't even know that I was this good. So I flew back to Germany just to hand in my portfolio and I actually got through to the last step of their "tryouts" (you have to paint live in front of them, etc.) but in the end I didn't get enough points. I needet 50 and I got 49. One fricking point. I was devastated. My dad always says: We live our live forewards but we understand it backwards. Now I am studying English and Philosophy and I couldn't be happier. Though I KNOW that I could be a really good art teacher and schools need passionate teachers. So I will try again for my masters and they better take me this time! So long story short: I kind of get what you are going through right now. Give yourself the time to be sad because it is okay. And then think about all the amazing things you can do in this extra year. You can do anything you want. ANNYTHING. Realize that and turn it into your best year so far. You got this!. I fell short on my interview component by a few points and didn't get into the school I was hoping for. So instead I'll be taking a year to work as a TA and gain more classroom experience so I can apply again next year and hopefully have a different outcome. I've always been told there is no timeline or set route for success, you just have to never give up if you want it. Good luck again!

Hey Jack, sorry to hear you didn't get the result you wanted. First off: this is not the end. You're an amazing person, with an impressive list of accomplishments, and buckets of natural charisma. If you're willing to explore, I think you'll find there are many doors open to you. Second: Some general notes that may be of use next year (if the applications process is anything like job applications): 1) See if you can ask for feedback on your application/view the assessment notes. 2) Make sure you are clear on what the assessors are looking for in an application. Its not unusual to see (job) applications which have highlighted things which the applicant is proud of, but which don't fit what the assessor is looking for. It is useful to get an objective opinion from someone you trust to go over your application and see whether you've hit the mark in this regard. 3) Tell a story in your application. Make it convincing. Third: You have an open year ahead of you. Before you fill it up with a hectic schedule, have a think about what you want to get out of the year, and things you want to learn. There are a plethora of skills/disciplines outside of Literature which will be useful in terms of life skills, but I think will give added insight and depth for future applications (whether for Masters, or otherwise). All the best for your year ahead!

Aaah Jack I'm so sorry they didn't recognise the talent in front of them 😥 sending love & best of luck for the year ahead. Honestly having a year out after finals has been the best decision i made and it allowed me to really think about what I wanted from an Msc and why. I think you really need that time as well to reflect on how much you achieved at undergrad plus when you reapply, they'll see your inevitably brill degree grades so it's not at all a gamble for them (I didn't know how else to word that so I hope it didn't come off bad?) Take this year one step at a time, take every opportunity that comes your way & then, even if it doesn't work out, at least you can say you really smashed it for you. I have every faith in you though ❤❤❤❤

"It is really tough when the best that you have still isn't good enough." I've had that thought soo many times in my life, and still do. I know that thousand of comfort words had been said to you already, and sometimes the rejections hits so hard that none of them are enough. But they are not empty words, Edward. In ours minds could seem that because we are so hurt of the rejection, but in this moments words are the only thing that we, as your viewers and subscribers, could offer to you. And be sure they are words full of love and comprehension. You are a fantastic human being, and no application, essay or resume could englobe that.

Everything you've said and everything you're feeling is valid! I genuinely have felt all the same things as you - I had an interview for English Lit at Oxford for undergrad too (same year as well I think!) and got rejected. It felt like my whole life had been leading up to Oxford, and suddenly the door was slammed in my face. Then at uni I worked hard for two years for a scholarship, thinking, "I've done my best, this has to be enough." And it wasn't. I let that experience totally knock my confidence and a year later I'm not over it. But watching this video has made me realise that you feel the exact same things as I did, and that that's normal, and it's okay. We learn and we grow and the things we thought were ours for the taking are no longer right for us. That's how we know we're moving forward. If you want a good read that deals w/ very similar feelings, try RADIO SILENCE by Alice Oseman! Sending all the love ❤️

Hey Jack, I understand how you feel completely and how the dream seems to remain strong! I applied to Cambridge for undergrad, didn't get in, took a gap year to apply again, got an offer and just missed the grades, and then I decided, too, that I would apply to Oxford for masters. I did my undergrad somewhere else and it was also the best place for me to be (like how you feel about Durham!) and then I applied to Oxford and did my masters there last year. I understand you about how the dream never seems to fade. Stay strong, and remember that being accepted isn't a reflection on your worth!

I'm sorry to see you so disappointed, Jack. I'm currently in the third year of my PhD at LSE (doing an ethnographic study of content creators and online video industry!) and let me tell you, people put WAY too much emphasis on big name universities. I have now been at 3 London based universities (BA SOAS, MA Goldsmiths, PhD LSE), and have taught and given lectures at Oxford and Cambridge. Whilst LSE is the most 'prestigious' of the universities I have attended, in the way that Oxford is, it is no better or worse in terms of standard or experience than the other two. I would HIGHLY recommend that you broaden your horizons and find an institution that appreciates you as much as you appreciate it. Oxford and Cambridge have too much of a monopoly on students, and everyone I know who has gone to Oxford has had a miserable time, at BA, MA and PhD level. All the best, Zoe
