First of all so sorry there wasn't a video on Wednesday! I think I am going to have to go back to one video per week (Saturdays at 10am) as my 3rd year work load just really hit me... sad. Anyway thank you so much for clicking on this, it is just a little walk through of my room - not the most aesthetic or impressive room but oh well!

Obviously, this video is four years old and I don't know how the world has turned in this regard - but I feel like students get hammered by university accommodation all across the UK. When I was an undergrad at Glasgow (back in 2008) this was especially galling, because, even including the added cost of bills, I would have been paying about half as much each month to live in a private rented flat. Instead of saving my cash, I spent an entire academic year living in a room not unlike a prison cell, with shared kitchen and bathroom, and, to top it all, the boiler broke down about two weeks in and, despite our constant complaints, it was never fixed - no heating, no hot water, right through the winter and until the end of the academic year. What I should have done, of course, is withhold the rent until the got it fixed, but I wasn't sensible enough to do that in those days. Point is, I think you were maybe being a little hard on Oxford. My experience of being there as a postgrad was that the quality of the accommodation was miles better (as far as uni halls go) and it was at least competitive with what you would pay privately. Anyway, really enjoying your channel since I stumbled across it, I hope life is treating you well.

Unfortunately I’ve found both the quality and cost varies substantially by college. Hopefully you got a good college accommodation wise? I’m glad it was good for you anyway!! I still agree with my sentiment in the video tbh, as I’m now still not paying as much as I did then in a private rental rn. However, I must give Oxford credit for their hardship funds that they have on offer because I benefitted massively from them and it meant I could pay my rent (I also had a part time job). Im pretty sure the room in this video is now around £40-£50 more a week (from what I’ve been told off the top of my head) which is honestly outrageous imo because no loans have gone up as much to match. You’re so right though it’s such a wide spread crisis for students, uni cities are extortionate and it’s a major barrier to education across the country.

@@RosieCrawford I'm teaching at Glasgow now and the loans not keeping up with inflation has been something brought up by the students from time to time. It is definitely a serious problem. Thanks for the reply.

I go to a regular state school in the US, not even an ivy league and my room costs about $300 more per month than the prices of the dorms you gave in the video for Cambridge. That's ridiculous. You said the prices were outrageous and I was just thinking to my self, "Wow! That also cheap!" And yes I did the conversions from gbp to usd. Also my room is wayyyy smaller than yours and I share my bathroom with 3 other people

Hey, i go to Oxford not Cambridge and these prices were per week, not per month (so it's over 700 per month). I am also calling the prices at Oxford outrageous based upon the discrepancy between all other universities in the UK and Oxford. I believe the high rent compared to less elite universities will put off poorer applicants and this is something that I am very passionate about combating

@@RosieCrawford Yeah I know, I just multiplied by 4 to get a rough estimate of how much it would cost per month. The point of what I meant to say is that even low rank schools in the US are way more expensive than the highest ranked schools in the UK. In my state universities cost a minimum of $10,000 per year on school and another $10,000 per year on on campus housing. Our school years are only 9 months long. So that's $20,000 or £15589 for every 9 months of school to even go to the worst schools. The better schools cost between $40,000 and $70,000 per school year. On top of this we have to go to school for one year longer than students in the UK to get the same degree so that adds to the cost even more. It was shocking for me to see how low on campus housing prices are at Oxford considering that it's one of the top universities in the world.

@@jennifermarea8011 wow ok the US higher education system seems kinda corrupt! How on earth is social mobility supposed to happen if people are expected to pay that much??? To be honest unfortunately for international students the prices are much more similar to the USA as they have to pay international fees and "college fees" (pretty sure they come to about £25,000 for the 27week year which is mega ridiculous). I dont know why this is but presume it has something to do with government subsidy?). Good luck with your studies!
@jennifermarea8011
@jennifermarea8011 5 лет назад
@@RosieCrawford It's also more expensive in the US for international students. The only way school is $20,000 per year is if you go to a government subsidized school in your state that isn't highly ranked. If you go to school out of state it's about double the price for the same school and if you go to school here internationally it's about three times the price. People who are extremely low income and have really good grades and SAT/ACT scores can get a lot of government aid to go to a state school, but the thing is that most middle class people can't pay such high prices for school but also can't qualify for aid so they have to take out loans which have really high interest rates. This is why so many people in America can't get an education. We're a first world country but we still lack in so many areas, like affordable education, health care, safety, etc. What you see on TV isn't what America's like in real life for most people. In reality there's a huge gap between the upper class and the lower class and lower class areas have huge issues with gangs, gun violence, and opiod use. It's also systematically set up so that it's mainly minority groups that live in those areas and it's hard to get an education even before college because the public schools are sometimes falling apart, have black mold, have issues with students bringing weapons to school, have bad teachers who give up on the students and then help them to cheat on the state exams so they don't get fired and replaced by a better teacher. It's almost impossible for low income students to score high enough on the SAT or ACT to get a scholarship because the education is not of the same quality as students who live in areas where the government puts more funding into the schools. I live in the Detroit area where you can easily see how much of a problem this is. That's why I'm studying elementary education. I hope I can work towards changing this one day. I've been to England and I've also seen TV shows like Educating Cardiff where you can see what the UK considers to be a "bad" public school. What's considered a bad public school in the UK would be considered a very good one in the US.

It depends on the college. Not at St Peter's, no, but other colleges do. Most are random though so you don't really get to choose in first year.
