Oxidation of Alcohols: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary

Primary Alcohol to Aldehyde, then Carboxylic Acid
Secondary Alcohol to Ketone
Tertiary Alcohol NO REACTION.
Oxidation is usually with potassium dichromate solution, which turns from orange to green if there's a reaction. Heat (reflux) is helpful.
You can stop the reaction at aldehyde by using "distillation".

This was truly an incredible video. Every other video I’ve watched on this topic has been very confusing, but I understood everything you said, and it was a very short video! Thank you so much Nate!

What about the popoff's rule of further oxidation of ketone group into 2 carboxylic acids..upon reacting it with strong oxidising agent..Why is it not applicable here...according to popoff's rule,,,the ketone should further convert to 2 carboxylic acids

@nourhanashraf2653
@nourhanashraf2653 5 лет назад
You cannot oxidize tertiary alcohols as the carbon attached to the OH group (known as carbinol) doesn't carry any hydrogen atoms to be oxidized ..
