I wanted to see how the different gases burned on a set distance. This experiment was a lot of fun, though also very dangerous! Propane is was predictable, but the acetylene and oxy-acetylene were unbelievably exciting. this is a gas vs gas head to head race comparing each gases reaction time and energy.

A word of caution, oxy-acetylene in balloons can be set off with just static electricity! Never do this! What should I test next?

I noticed that you filled the big balloon at the end from the tanks directly. If you used regulators and and actual torch, you could achieve a stoichiometric mixture which would give a more optimal mixture and bigger bang! You would establish a suitable flame and then snuff it out to fill your balloons.

Is that a "Neutral flame?" Our metals instructor showed us the danger with 3 balloons. 1st was Oxygen, it just made a pop. The 2nd was acetylene, which made a bang and an orange flame. 3rd was a neutral flame, he put it out, then filled the balloon. The bang was so loud it shook the room and the kids from woodworking next door came running in!

Very nice video once again! Acetylene is used in The Netherlands (by farmers) on the last day of the year to celebrate. Very loud. So much fun. You can take anything that can hold gas, seal it with a piece of plastic but NEVER firmly lock the gas up, and ignite it. The expanding gas will exit via the least resistive route (thus via the plastic). Be careful with future experiments, and keep the vids comming!

@@ChrisRollins I live in The Netherlands, will return on the 29th from a week Denmark. Just let me know in case you have some spare time. It's called "carbid schieten", crazy men shoot with thousands of liters of gas. The gas comes from tiny pieces of stone (it's a non-natural material) that need to be sprinkeled with water and then the stones will release acetylene. It comes a bit precise with the mixture in the amount of stones, water, and the time you'll have to wait before enough gas is produced. Roughly 40 secs up to a minute is enough though for a great explosion. Ear protection required. Ignition can remotely be done by mounting a spark plug. Lot's of variations can be thought of :)

All the black soot from the acetylene at 2:18 will not be surprising to anyone who's done oxy-acetylene welding and let an acetylene-rich yellow flame burn for a few seconds - little black stringy specks floating in the air and settling on any surface.

5:32 Holding it at arms length probably does make sense. If it goes off it will still deafen you (probably), maybe cause severe burns to your hand and lower arm, but probably not to your body. And when it comes to treating burns, the area affected is definitely a major consideration. I doubt the blast wave (sans any flying debris such as a grenade would produce) would cause much physical damage. (But I'm just guessing on that!)

Bro, I know this was a long time ago, but I just found your channel, finally by they way! You need to create the longest OxyAce balloon chain explosion! Find out how far away one balloon will set off the next, reliably, then space as many as you can down a runway, or across a field somehow, or make a loop, make a "domino" course some how! I don't know. But this was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time! Full on subscriber, thanks for all the content!

This would be a great subject for the "Slow Mo Guys" to cover. They have a camera which takes around a million frames per second. Oxy-acetylene with an almost perfect stoichiometric ratio has a super sonic detonation speed.

I may or may not have at one point set off a 55 gallon garbage bag of oxygen and acetylene. If I did do that, it could have rattled pictures off walls over 2.5 miles away

Luai Derar that wasn’t mixed right. You need to set the torch right, knock the fire out, and crank the oxygen up higher. 55 gallons, mixed correctly, will make your ears bleed if you are with in 300 yards or so.

that's a cool idea! Id be nervous, i found out on the day i filmed this, a friend of mine had a balloon go off from static electricity. Id be so nervous with 300 balloons. maybe someone can send me a suit from the bomb squad?! anyone???

Chris Rollins I’ve been thinking about this, how about setting them up on a string which spans a pond or lake? The water would effectively ground the balloons reducing risk of static.

OMG... I knew before even watching that the Oxy-Acetylene was going to be "dangerous" but I sure didn't expect ALL of them to explode THAT quickly 😲 Glad everyone is OK (and not bleeding out of ears)😜 5:52 Natalie is so coool 👍😁 A fabricator friend of mine used to fill 1/2 pint milk cartons (WAY smaller) and they were SCARY LOUD when they blew up (at the other end of a large garage/shop)...

The balloon at the end brings back fond memories of a gym ball I filled with OXY and acet, it was leaking so stupid me filled with immaturity ( 35yo) desperate to see another explosion taped the fill cause leaking , seeing rivers of gas grow under the tape, lit a 10" length of wick and boooooooommmmm , I can still see the beautiful ball of flame rapidly expanding with an outer layer of moons (shattered gym ball) about to engulf me . Spent the next two weeks in hospital，time frame give or take, I was on morphine and OxyContin. Would do again, got a gym ball?

I had a really dumb buddy in high school that filled a large trash bag with oxyacetylene mix and then proceed to throw a bunch cardboard on a bonfire with like 40 people around. He then threw the trash bag on top of the cardboard and told everybody to run. Everybody managed to get away but the explosion was so bright, loud, and powerful that I couldn’t hear for way over a minute, couldn’t see for like 15 seconds, and firewood was thrown so far that it knocked out somebody’s back window of their truck and it was parked like 50 yards away.

To all viewers, please don't mess around with oxygen and acetylene mixture. You can easily blow your eardrums out or lose an eye or be seriously burned. Static electricity can set these gas bombs off , you won't even know what happened, you could be left with life changing injuries.

Fun story from a time when I used oxy.... I was cutting some pipe when the lunch bell rang, and as any hourly worker would, I immediately stopped what I was doing, shut off the torch (we'll get back to this), dumped my PPE and went to get some bomb Chinese takeout. little did I know that I had not shut off the torch all the way, on either side of the torch, so oxy and acetylene was flowing in a perfect mixture down a 40' length of 12" sch80 pipe. When I returned from lunch, with a belly full of Chinese food, I struck that torch and began to cut where I left off. The resulting explosion did not hurt anyone physically, but the dust from the rafters was thoroughly shaken, and we all had ringing ears. Be careful with yer oxy acy! also once in a while pressurize your hoses and stick them in a bucket of water to check for leaks, you don't want that sneaking up on you.

I heard of a Russian welding contractor at a mine site in northern Ontario that filled a garbage bag with oxy-acetylene mix and set it off. It shattered a number of windows! They couldn't fire him because he was a contractor but he was invited to never be on company property again.......ever!

I did this once with one of those punching bag balloons filled to nearly bursting. I threw it off a bridge onto a fire we built below. It literally shook the entire concrete bridge.

I haven't even watched the oxy-acetylene yet, but I know she's probably going to get knocked on her butt. I have played with that stuff before and one balloon that size is enough to make an explosion so loud and so hard that you should be feeling it where you're sitting with your camera and you're going to do 10!! She'll be lucky if she doesn't take a ride to the hospital and lose her hearing at the same time! On another note carrying it in your hand is very stupid, oxygen and acetylene can go off by simply static electricity!

I lost my eardrums lighting off a oxy-ace balloon I had at arms length. I had tested it without oxygen and thought yea smoky needs oxygen. I had no earplugs and yeah I thought I died. I had to have surgery to rebuild my eardrums.

Acetylene is such a volatile gas that you need to know what your doing just having a cylinder of it. You have to treat the cylinder as though you would a bomb, gently and cautiously. If a cylinder was to fall off a truck, or even fall over and hit the ground if it were a tall one, you want to hope you're not next to it. You cant even store or transport it laying down it has to be upright. Being volatile means its an unstable gas, and that it can react and explode by physical means like the cylinder being struck, hit or dropped. And if you have it connected to a oxy/acet torch with oxygen, you always have to turn on and light the acetylene first before the oxygen. The only reason its used is cause it burns so much hotter than other gasses. Its just theres so many safety protocols with it though..

That was dumb. All it would have taken is a splinter from one of those sticks, and it would have been game over! Oxy-acetylene detonates! It is one of the very few low explosives to do this without confinement, and all it would have taken is two minutes of research to know this.

While I was working at a plant 2 maintenance men got the stupid idea to fill a garbage bag with oxy/acetylene and take into the compressor room near my work station. This room was about the size of a large single car garage. When they set of the bag I thought the door was going to come off the hinges. Both idiot came out holding their ears and were disoriented from the concussion. They are luck to still have hearing and eyesight doing something that stupid.

I used to inflate large garbage bags with oxy acetylene and lighting them on fire. After having done that hundreds of times I got a little uncareful and had a little accident. While closing one of the bags I scrubbed it against the woolen sweater I was wearing and blew the roof of our shed off. My ear drums where 2/3rds gone on the right and 1/2 on the left. It blew most of my clothes clean off from my chest to my knees. I was just wearing a belt, the elastic band from my underwear and some rags after the bang. So definately do not try this at home because you will mess up your carpet and might even damage some furniture in the process.

Before I watch it I'll make a prediction. Propane - slowest. Acetylene - faster (anything from 3 to 83% acetylene in air is inflammable - that's a huge flammability range and suggests the mixing time will be shorter). Oxy-acetylene - lightning fast, it's already pre-mixed. Now I'll watch and see...
