Oxygen-Acetylene: "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?!" - Kevin Caron

From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shares some of the things you want to do - and not do - when using an oxygen-acetylene torch ....
A viewer wrote and asked Caron about some of the things to look at, be aware of - what could possibly go wrong - with an oxygen-acetylene torch, which both welds and cuts.
One of the first things to do when you buy a new oxygen-acetylene unit or set one back up after a while, is to inspect your hoses, especially where they make sharp bends, such as near the regulator. Look for any cracks in the liner. If they're cracked, get rid of them. Don't even keep them around. They could start to leak and cause a fire, and then, as Caron says, "You're running out the door with your hair on fire and making all kinds of weird noises."
Next, Caron recommends you check your whole system for leaks every time you get the unit out to use it. Put some water and a few drops of dish soap into a squirt bottle. Turn on your valves to get pressure in the system, and spray all of your connections, even on the torch handle and body itself. If bubbles appear, you have a leak. Turn everything off and fix any leaks.
Another thing to keep in mind when using an oxygen-acetylene torch is that you have plenty of hose. Don't bring the bottles right next to where you are working. If you do, your hose usually ends up coiled beneath you where sparks and molten metal are falling, and you have two bottles that are basically bombs sitting right next to you. Keep the gas bottles at a distance, and extend the hose so you're not tripping on it or dripping hot metal on it.
Also be careful to use the right safety gear. After all, you're dealing with explosive gases, molten metal and flying sparks. Caron emphasizes that you need dark safety glasses, not clear ones. You also need to wear leather gloves, preferably heavy welding gloves with gauntlets. Don't try to use work gloves that have mesh backs, which sparks go right through. Using the right gloves helps prevent burning yourself or setting your gloves on fire. Also wear cotton clothes or a leather apron or sleeves. Closed-toe leather shoes - not sneakers, not flip flops, not barefoot - are a must. Dress for the job so you don't get hurt.
Another big discussion with oxygen-acetylene is how far you open the valves on the bottles. Caron likes to open his a quarter-turn, so if there is ever a problem, he can turn it off quickly and easily. The valve has a seal above and below the outlet. The bottom seal keeps the gas in the bottle and out of the regulator. As soon as you open the valve, it pressurizes the regulator. The top seal seals the shaft of the valve to keep gas from coming out of the top. So a lot of guys like to open the valve all the way and bottom that upper seal out at the top of the valve body. But if there's a problem, you have to turn the valve all the way off to shut it. Caron says there's a lot of controversy about this issue, and that people should do whatever works for them.
Finally, when you're done using the unit, do you leave pressure in the system or bleed it off in the system between the valve and the torch itself? Caron likes to leave the pressure on for about a half hour. Then he can look at the gauges to make sure the readings haven't changed. If the pressure reading has dropped, he has a leak. If this happens, get that soapy water and find the leak. If the readings don't change, the system is tight, and you can open your torch and bleed off the pressure.
One last thing: if you're not using your oxygen-actylene unit for a couple of days, put the safety caps on the bottles and remove your regulators and coil them up out of the way. You can leave the bottles chained to the cart, and put it out of the way. If you leave the regulators on and the torch cart gets knocked over, you have a good chance of snapping off the regulator or the valve. "That's not good," says Caron.
Caron says he hopes that gives viewers something to think about - you can comment below the video. Please also subscribe to Channel Kevin and come out to Caron's site at www.kevincaron.com to see more how-to videos, Caron's sculptures and subscribe to his newsletter.

Never use oil or grease on any part of your regulators ! I had a friend in tech school who worked at a Garage during the day and the adjusting t handle on the oxygen regulator was hard to turn so the bosses kid greased it. When my friend turned the tank on to use the torch the regulator exploded and he lost part of two fingers !!

This is good... I don't see anyone else stressing safety with the Oxy-Acetylene rig. I've had one mishap where a previous regulator (that was cranked up on a dead bottle of acetylene) was refitted to a new bottle. The person I was working with (my brother) wasn't trained to do this check list and I feel it almost costed us our lives. One hose blew up and the flashback was luckily stopped at the regulator. If it had gone into the acetylene bottle, I know without doubt I wouldn't be here today. The flashback was ultra violent, it created a huge bang. Know what you are messing with! 8 PSI for acetylene and I like 11-20 PSI on the oxygen side. Go above those numbers if you are feeling stupid.
@TheDadPenfield
@TheDadPenfield 5 лет назад
You have oxygen and acetylene confused. Oxygen you open all the way because it is not dangerous and is very high pressure and the valve needs to be seated. Acetylene is low pressure and the valve does not need to be seated but is dangerous. On acetylene you open only 1/4 turn so you can turn it off quickly. Oxygen you open completely, acetylene only 1/4 turn.

@Cope1024 10 лет назад
Kevin, I have been using O/A since 1070, and just watched a Victor O/A safety video. On the O2 cylinder, you ALWAYS backseat the valve when in use. Opening slowly at first is correct in case there is a problem. The Acetylene is only opened 1/2-1 turn ( just enough to get full pressure on the high side gauge). If it hits the fan, it will be the Acetylene, and there in lies the need for a quick shutdown. ( as you run out the door, yell to The Voice to shut it down)

Correct! I have no earthly why he states, 'Some guys believe you need to open it up...'. YOU DO. It's a counterseat design so, those 'some guys' are completely industry correct! His recommendation is a pure safety concern.

It has been suggested to purge each hose for about 5 seconds per 10 feet to insure there is no gas mix in the hoses before igniting the torch. There is a comment below about the oxygen valve opening amount; I have been informed it should be opened fully to prevent leaking and possible overheating of the valve. (Also see oxygen tanks and valves used for rescue vs. aluminum regulators.)

While I agree with your thoughts on the high pressure Oxygen valve being just a quarter turn, some valve designs will not seal the stem until the valve is fully open. I had a "new" bottle bleed down when the valve was at a quarter turn. So now I have quick release fittings just off the regulator. This permits me to quickly disrupt the flow in case of an emergency. It also allows for the hoses to be disconnected when not in use or for transport. just my $.02

Hi I need help, I set my oxy/ acet system up all worked fine. Went to use today and no gas seems to go through pipes.... I'm well confused. Regulators are fine and bottles both full. Any advice would be great...
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 3 года назад
Start at the bottles, remove the regulator and crack open the valve. Gas flows? Hook up regulator and remove hose. Try again. Gas flow? It's the hose or the torch. No gas flow it's the regulator. My bet is the regulator is bad.

How do you store the regulators when not in use? Do you need to worry about dust getting inside the connections?
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 4 года назад
Mine are in a cabinet in the tool room. Door closed and the adjustment screw backed off. If I can find the caps for the ends I put them on as well. If I need to use one I just crack the bottle valve for a second to blow the valve out before I put the regulator on and do it again before I put the hose on. Great question!
@Bouzoukiellas
@Bouzoukiellas 4 года назад
Kevin Caron, Artist mine never came with caps. And I’d hate for my oxygen regulator to get dust inside it and blow up

just picked up some sued torches and regulators on is a smith vintage i keep reading smith has life time warranty but they won't fix it, the torches are unidweld and UL, i cna't find UL seems to be a knockoff radnor i think , and one heavy duty victor, i'm afraid to light them until i know they are good, how can i check them ' / one guy told me to get o rings at ace hardware if o rings leak wouldn't i see it with soapy water? if no leak is there any danger? will it just pop or blowup ?? thanks
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 7 лет назад
Look at the orings to make sure they are there and not broken. Blow air through the torch body and tips to make sure they are open/not clogged. Look at the hose to make sure not cracked or cut. Put regulators on gas bottles and turn adjustment screws all the way out- but do not remove from regulator body. Check for leaks, no leaks,, put all together and check for leaks again.. No leaks,,,, fire her up!! If any time you find a problem have the torch rebuilt first or get new hose or ....

theya re open when hooked up gas flows, o rings look very compressed and on the big vicotor has a line/ contact point in it o rings are flush, not over the groove

Talk about poor advice. You MUST open the oxygen cylinder and the acetylene cylinder all the way for safety reasons. The only time you open them 1/4 is with the key style wrench also you need a flashback arrestor at the regular.
