"Oyfn Veg Shteyt a Boym" is a song based on the poem by Itzik Manger (born 1901 in Czernowitz, today Ukraine). A song about freedom.
Like many other Manger poems it was set to music. Its composer is disputed, some credit Philip Laskowsky.
Itzik Manger lived in Romania, Poland, France, England, the US and Israel.
His song is about a child’s wish to be as free as a bird. Is he that child? Was he free?
We sing for hope that our Ukrainian friends will soon be free.

My granny taught me Yiddish as a child, sadly I can hardly remember any of it. I remember her signing this song to me. Thank you! Todah Rabah!

@@LeaKalisch She did sing many songs, and told many stories. I miss her singing and telling tells. My grandmother was a farmer and as strong as a bull, but when she wanted to she could be a elegant woman, she had a kind heart and was a friend to all.

Todah rabah. Merci mille fois. It's not just your voice and the song that were beautiful, it's also the way you acted the song. A mechiah. My mother did not sing that song as far as I remember and her extended family in Warsaw did not survive. Her mamaloshen was Yiddish but she lost most of it and I'm not sure how much she remembered as she aged. I found you because of a post on Instagram by David Asher Brown.

I’m currently learning Yiddish and one thing that has significantly helped me in learning is listening to Yiddish music. I’ve heard this poem before but never set to music! This performance was absolutely beautiful!! thank you for sharing this with the world!!
