On this episode of talking with docs Guest Dr.Cheng talks about the use Ozempic.
Ozempic is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which work by increasing insulin production and decreasing sugar production in the liver. Ozempic is usually injected once a week and is used in combination with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels. It has been shown to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes who also have cardiovascular disease. As with any medication, it is important to talk to your doctor about the potential benefits and risks of using Ozempic.

I cut carbs four years ago. My blood glucose never goes above 130 after a meal now, but better yet, I lost 150lbs. From 321lbs to 170lbs. I’m now 62 years old. I haven’t eaten white potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, or fruit for 4 years now, and I don’t miss them.

I'm 58 years old, and have had type2 diebetes for 13 years now. Before I was on Lantus and Apidra and was heavily over weighted, a bit over 140 kg. I started Ozempic 2 years ago and I lost 30 kg in 6 months, and now after 2 years I'm steadily in 95 kg, and happy for it. This medication has saved my life...

I can confirm since I have been on Ozempic for the last 2 months, I'm eating about half what I was eating before and feeling completely satiated. It still takes me by surprise when I feel full after eating a small portion. Thanks for the excellent explanation of what the drug does.

Type 2 diabetes is my problem. I started ozempic about 9 months ago. It has helped my cravings, the amount I eat at meal time, an most important has dropped by A1C from 9.6 to 5.9. I’m now 63 and this is the first time I have ever gotten below a 7.5. I have lost 30 lbs but I am happier about the A1C drop and I have more energy and am getting to where I can do more. Thank you for this informative video.

Better check your muscle mass via a dexa scan. Ozempic is notorious for losing lean muscle mass, which in essence makes you fatter (muscle to fat ratio)

I have been taking Ozempic for weight loss for about three weeks. I’ve noticed my skin is improving (less breakouts, less random hairs, rash under breasts going away.) I’ve also noticed weight loss..not sure how much. This medication will change my life! I had lost 40lbs on my own and this medication will help me to get to less than 200. As far as I’m concerned this medication is worth the common side effects. I feel beautiful again!!

Ozempic is covered by British Columbia PharmCare and by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), but only with your doctor's approval and in cases where you have treatment-resistant diabetes. It is not covered for weight loss yet, but if obesity is a chronic disease it should be considered.

10 years ago my blood test showed pre diabetes. Knowing that my diet was the issue, I began the great task of overcoming my *carb addiction!* Now, I eat low carb and feel way, way better. I’m 60 and on *zero* medications. It’s a *choice* to eat healthy foods, instead of carbs and sweets. Break the carb ADDICTION! ❤️🍀

Sadly, Ozempic is getting much harder to get. As a Type 2 diabetic, I’ve taken it for 18 months. The good news is it’s done exactly what the commercials and the doctor said it would do. It, along with minor dietary changes, lowered my A1c from 8.4 to below 7.0 in the first 3 months! However, though I use a major pharmacy, I’ve gone stretches of 4 weeks once and 3 weeks twice without taking it due to pharmacy unavailability. This has caused my A1C to spike above 7 on each occasion. On two occasions I was switched to Trulicity which I had a few uncomfortable side effects.

My cousin has been using this style of injection for 4+ years now and he said it’s the biggest change in his life. He has always taken good care of his body and sugar levels but this makes him a lot less worried about transporting and storing it with quick use

Thanks again....I always learn something new on your presentations! The one thing, I think wasn't covered, was how Qzempic compares to the drug Metformin. I suspect, many people like me, take Metformin for Diabetes 2. Should it be replaced with Qzempic? I personally don't have high blood sugar or are obese, but I do like the idea of once a week injection.

53yo South Asian male. I've been on Ozempic for just over a year and I'm still waiting to see my A1C levels and weight to drop. My A1C as of 03/23 was 6.7% and I'm about 23-25lbs overweight. I also take Janumet, statin and Candesartan for bp. At one time my Vitamin D was at 19 nmol/L but recently it was at 64 (5,000 UI of vitamin D daily) Maybe its time to discuss Wagovey with my family doctor or its time to see a endocrinologist... Love the short clips on today's medicine!!! Keep up the excellent work...

Last year, literally 13 months ago I realized I had to do something. I was so fat from just laying in bed for almost 5 years (after my son’s death). I developed lung cancer during that period, and had a LUL lobectomy, but never rehabbed, so I was fat, out of shape, had sleep apnea, HTN, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, shortness of breath, chronic pain,and more. So I started dieting. Lost about 30 lbs by the end of May with little effort, just gave up junk. My doctor put me on ozempic in June because I had plateaued and I have since lost another 35 lbs. I have some nausea occasionally but that’s it. I started walking around September last year ( have chronic back and knee pain and it was too hard with the weight), and now I am scheduled for a TKR in two weeks, which I’m dreading, but I’m in the best shape I’ve been in in awhile. Watched all your knee video’s and have been doing prehab, so guess I’m ready. Would like to lose 7 lbs before surgery but it isn’t happening. I never did go up to full dose of ozempic ( stayed at 1 mg) but have modified my diet considerably and now that I have it really doesn’t bother me. Mostly portion control, cutting carbs. My labs are significantly better across the board. Hope to ultimately lose another 10 to 20 lbs but even if I don’t I’m at least back to a healthier weight. Thanks for all the helpful videos

Your TKR will go swimmingly. It is not an easy feat, prepare yourself to fight through the urge to not exercise. I had that after my open heart surgery, at first it was going well, but I almost gave up. Look at a channel called Exercise for Health. It is a British bloke giving all sorts of in home exercises. I started following him and am now doing almost every exercise and feel great again. Let us know how you fared?

Yes it has the FDAs highest warning for possible development of thyroid cancer and MEN-2. This needs to be monitored by your physician. Very uncommon but potentially serious

Thank you for this. There was so much great information packed into this video. I was prescribed Ozempic for being pre-diabetic according to my A1C. It was hopefully going to prevent the need for insulin, help lower my high blood pressure and help me lose weight. At the same time, and for the past few years I have changed my eating habits and increased my exercise/activity with no big beneficial changes to my health. That’s why I was prescribed this medicine. After about 2-3 doses the nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation kicked in,in cycles. Two weeks straight of all these GI issues and my PCP explained that my solution was going to have to be another change of lifestyle and not this particular medication. I wish those whose systems can tolerate it, great success.

I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance after gaining about 65 pounds in four months. I have tried diet, exercise, cutting back certain foods, etc., while my A1C dropped, my weight has not decreased at all. I started the Semeglutide shot two weeks ago and have had nausea and vomiting the first 2-3 days after taking the shot (I took .1 the first time and .2 the second time). My question to you is, did you ever start to feel better as your body adapted to this medication or did you just have to stop it?? Thank you so much for any information.

As a diabetic who is prescribed Trulicity/Ozempic I can state that it really helps to maintain my sugars at a manageable level. In all honesty I just wish Doctors told patients that they don't prescribe it for weight loss. That the weight loss they get may be at the cost of their endocrine system. As far as I am aware the long term use can make your system become sluggish and not produce the natural hormones or get the effect from it. In other words it may cause you to become insulin resistant.

I am about to be 65 and just began taking Ozempic. Since my hormones have gone on strike, at this point, I don't think I should be concerned in lack of production. I hope the Dr.s would correct me if I wrong. 😐

As a type 2 for 40 years I've used Ozempic and Mounjaro. MJ me off insulin after 25 years. Insulin causes massive weight gain and worsens insulin resistance. I'll take the odds on Ozempic and MJ anyway. Also down 110 lbs

I’m Type II diabetic and I’ve been on Ozempic for about 4 months. In the first 2 months I lost about 75 pounds and 6 pants sizes. I haven’t exercised to much because I’m having both knees replaced. I’ve had 1 replaced and getting the other one replaced is May. I plan on exercising afterwards. I think it’s going to be awesome for weight loss after it’s approved and after the supply chain issues are resolved.

@@networth00 I’m at 1 but I started 1/2 for the first month (I forget the unit of measure but I think it’s milliliter. You can expect nausea. I usually give myself injections on Saturday and I’ll vomit off and on until Tuesday. Depending on your goals and what you want to accomplish it may or may not be appropriate for you. I’ve also got cancer so for me it’s just 1 more thing but, that’s just me.

Might you talk about something like my mini-knee. Years ago I developed a lump, size of a large grape just below my knee. It doesn't hurt except if I accidentally kneel on it. It was x-rayed and told it is basically a hard benign lump of fat. What do you think? Is that common? Can it become cancerous?

Sounds like it may be a lipoma. Hard to say without seeing it. If concerned an MRI would give more info. It is unlikely that it would become cancerous.

Oh, Oh, Ohzempic... I am on the 2mg version and had to laugh a few times and I am so glad you made this!! It has helped, and is helping me tremendously. First and foremost my A1C is completely under control, no more spikes and I am sitting at a decent 5.8-6.1 level at this moment. Like Dr. Paul is saying and you both have always been saying, it is about lifestyle choices. The side effects of Ozempic are the same as if I would eat way too much and have stomach pain and yep... I had to talk to the porcelain telephone once. It really helps and my weight is slowly creeping to a healthier me. I was, at one time, afraid this would not help, but after slowly going up to the 2mg it is now working as my doctor had anticipated. The only thing is the lifetime commitment. This medication is stinking expensive and I am grateful my insurance is covering it. Thanks for bringing us healthcare with a smile!!

Hi Al, May I ask how much it is? Ozempic is approved in the EU. I'm in Ireland and all Diabetic medications are free in our Health System as Diabetes is on our long term illness list so we don't have to pay for any medications but I am just curious and hope you don't mind me asking 🙂

@@alexg5513 Of course you may ask how much it is. For 6 boxes (each 4 mg) it was CAD $1366. That is 3 month supply. As I wrote I am covered through my insurance at work and at this moment I do not pay anything for it. I am originally from The Netherlands where the healthcare is also free. Here in Canada it changes slightly after I retire as I no longer am covered under the insurance through work. Ozempic is so expensive because it is in high demand, but at this moment it is not covered under a provincial healthcare plan.

Really? Very sad? Stop the virtue signaling. Your lack of understanding of the disease of obesity is very sad. First of all, Wegovy is the exact same glp-1 semaglutide as Ozempic and its approved for obesity only, not diabetes. So you could easily argue that these diabetics are causing shortages for those with the deadly disease of obesity. Both arguments are wrong. Turn your anger to pharmaceutical and insurance companies for mismanaging supply chains and access to these potentially life changing meds.

My doctor prescribed 7.5 mg Ozempic to lower for my A1C & to lose weight & lower my blood pressure! I haven’t taken it yet because I have Gastroparesis and the side effects can be rough! MOUNJARA is suppose to be even better for sugar control & weight loss and less side effects!

Another doctor (Dr. Ken Berry) said that ozempic has many risks (and understands the benefits) that so many doctors aren't talking about. I was rx'ed it for weight loss, pcos, insulin resistance but after hearing some of those risks I decided not to start it since I knew this is something that didn't want to take forever and might not have the funds to take forever. Instead I'm really just trying harder to hone in my diet and supplements

Hi Brandon. We did not go over all of the side effects but there is an increased risk of thyroid cancer particularly in those with a family history and should be discussed with your doctor and pharmacist. Thanks for bringing this up

@@robertusga exactly in mice among other animals. You do realize they use mice and other animals to test what could happen in humans. Hint the possible side effect of thyroid cancer. Guess what? The drug has only been on the market for 5 years so go ahead and test your luck with it. How about the study that shows when ozempic is used 2/3 of the weight loss is not even fat but lean good weight. How about people just stop being lazy and stop trying to get the easy way out. Look back at the major lawsuits where company’s knew drugs would kill people and sold them anyways.

Ozempic has made a huge difference in the management of my T2 diabetes, which I have been on for approx 18 months, the last 5-6 of which I've had to resort back to Trulicity due to the supply issues we've had with Ozempic in Australia...which now we're hopefully on the better side of. Whilst I found Trulicity a fair substitute, it just did not have the same effects that Ozempic does. Together with my dietary changes and more regular exercise, I have personally found Ozempic to be working well for me, and would highly recommend it anyone who is thinking about taking the step towards its use. Thank you for this video, has been very informative to more how it works within the whole system...greatly appreciated!!! Cheers from Sydney Aus!!!

the risk mentioned is due to results seen in mice studies - likely because GLP 1 receptors on their thyroid glands - humans do not have GLP 1 receptors in their thyroid glands so it is unlikely to carry over.

Ozempic had been a HUGE help for me when I was suddenly pre-diabetic with a high A1C. I've been struggling for years with my weight, I'd do workouts, cutting carbs, IF, meal preps, I never went over 260lbs but if I lost it'd start coming back no matter the changes or intensity I'd do. And I've eaten a healthy diet much of my adult life due to food allergies and sensitivities. My blood work was always great so nothing was making sense, but suddenly my A1C shot up. Dr tried metformin at first but switched to ozempic, and it's been a HUGE help to me. I'm now down to 120lbs maintain and starting to add in workouts (now that I can again) to help me the rest of the way. I've been lucky to have practically no major side effects. I'd say some slight extra fatigue, constipation on occasion 🤔 can't say for headaches tho cause I get that on the daily with seasonal allergies 😅 stomach starts achy a day or two before I'm to take the next injection I've noticed.

Because I’m in desperate need of bilateral TKR and can’t seem to loose the weight I need to after Covid, my Dr has just started me on ozempic, I’m certainly starting to see some weight lose ar the point of starting the 4th week but now notice some very mild nausea. Do worth it and will work with that if I can get my knees done and better control my weight. Thank you very informative.
