I love kookaburras, they're the most laid-back birds in the world. Other birds will piss off if you get within ten feet of them, but kookas will just sit there while you walk right up to them and look at you like, "Ay mate, 'ow's it goin'?" They're - yeah, I'll say it - unflappable.

I had a Kookaburra steal the meat out of a steak sandwich, right out of my hands. I was just standing there at a BBQ eating it and the Kookaburra decided to have it instead. No warning and boom. First I knew it was gone,,,,. The bird’s aim was dead on. It swooped in from 30 odd metres away. The bread wasn’t even touched… just the steak ripped right out. I had a good laugh and cooked another one. What else can you do with a bird that has evolved to snatch Lizards, Brown and Tiger snakes (obviously not big ones) right out of the grass.

When I migrated to Oz as a teenager, the first animal I heard was the kookaburra. The little buggers really spun me out. I had never heard a bird that sounded like that. For several minutes I stood there in amazement. Looking at the trees, trying to locate the angry monkeys I was sure were about to attack me 😅

@@LindaC616 You can't tell the two apart, I'd say. Not if you're new to the sound. I only had two voices in my head at that moment. One voice was saying _'Wtf? But there are no monkeys in Australia'._ The other was saying _'Fuck you, first voice. I know what I heard'._ Eventually the first voice won but the interval was definitely fun 😁

Why? Surely it's not that hard to find some high quality dolphin recordings? Some sound guy's in the back all "Hey dude... we need a sound sample of an elephant. I reckon if we pitch shift a monkey flinging poo at tourists and slow it down by 38.29% it'll sound exactly identical. Also, on a totally unrelated note I have these two free tickets to the local zoo. I hear they have an excellent monkey exhibit".

I was at an outdoor wedding a few years ago and when the cake was served, it was like a scene from Hitchcock: Just kookaburras everywhere, hiding, waiting, and swooping down to steal the cake right out of our hands. We lost some good cake that day, but we survived to tell the tale.

Kookas do sound a lot like gibbons. I used to work at Melbourne Zoo and every day around dusk when I was on my way home, the gibbons would make their gibbon noises very loudly, so I know the sound well.

I’ll never forget the time when me and my mates went to spend a day and have a BBQ IN the Royal National Park in Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 in 1983 . Just as my mate pulled a small steak 🥩 off the hot grill a bloody big Kookaburra swooped down off a tree 20 meter away from where we were standing next to the BBQ and just as my mate was putting his cooked steak 🥩 on a piece of bread 🍞 the Kookaburra grabbed my mates steak while in flight and swallowed it whole, then the damn thing started singing in the tree . I don’t know if it was singing because of that hot steak burning its gullet or not but we all couldn’t stop laughing at what just happened and the stunned look on my mates face 😆.

I wish we had them here in the US. I'm such a bird person, I couldn't live there, I would have every bird at my house. LOL I have 6 cockatiels and a budgie. They have free reign of the house.

Right now in my front yard as I sit here drinking my morning cuppa, I can see 23 Rainbow lorikeets, ( I think. They won't stay still long enough to count properly,it might only be 11 but making enough noise for 70), some galahs ( who bothers counting galahs) , 3 crested pigeons (they have punk hairdos), 5 Corellas ( a family outing I assume) 2 wattle birds (beautiful birds, they love my grevilleas) and 3 very pissed off maggies up in a tree ( Australian magpies, very vocal with a complex language,real characters) who are definitely not happy sharing THEIR garden with the parrot upstarts.

Yep - and they are the bossiest birds around. Watched one once having a half hour fight with his own reflection in a stainless steel drinking straw dispenser and as well as seeing off most other birds, they will cheerfully dive bomb dogs. They are tiny. They were almost lost to Western Australia when a spray was developed to kill Argentine ants when they had reached plague proportions - turned out that ants were a major part of the Willie Wagtail diet. It was so exciting to start noticing them around again from the 1980s onwards - like being given a second chance

When I was young I saw a Kookaburra fly down and pick up a big snake up from the ground, took it back into the trees and smacked its head on the branch until it was dead then started to eat it. These birds are awesome.

When I was in elementary school we sang a song about Kookaburra sitting in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he, laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra, gay your life must be. This was in the 60s, in the US. When gay strictly meant happy. I don't think I knew a Kookaburra was a bird until my son went to Australia 12 years ago.
