40+ years later. It's just simply astounding the mark Randy Rhoads made with just 2 albums.

The interlude at 2:30 never fails to give me chills. In my opinion, the best and most melodic thing ever played on a guitar

This album is flawless. Although Randy was never one to be very repetitive with his playing, I've always wished he would have made the intro to this song longer because it's one of the best I've ever heard. His abilities were beyond amazing. There are great guitarists who have come before and after him, but I feel nobody's ever done what he did. He didn't waste a song with any boring fillers;. everything seemed to have a specific purpose to enhance the musical story. What a shame we only got two albums of his brilliance.

I love the build up at the end of this song. Randy Rhoads, you will never be forgotten.

I get very emotional when I listen to this. It feels like Randy is here. “Blizzard of Ozz” & “Diary of A Madman” are true Metal classics. It’s hard to imagine that “Diary” was released 40 years ago. I was 8 years old when it was released. I never had the opportunity to meet Randy, and it makes me very sad as well as angry that I’ll never get that chance. I know he’s looking down on us assuring us that he’s okay and safe. Randy I absolutely love what you gave us, even though you were only for a short time. Your talents transcends in all of us. Thank you for giving us your heart as well as your amazing writing and playing. We love and miss you everyday.

I was 11 in 81. My older brother brought this album home. I had been learning Sabbath on the guitar since i was 7. When i heard Randy for the first time, it absolutely blew my young mind. He inspired me to learn the guitar like the masters, and i did. Ive played for over 45 years and Randy always makes me smile.

Ozzy and Randy. Such a great pairing. Those first two solo albums are timeless masterpieces.

this song is woven together so perfectly. Everyone involved in the composition of this tune deserve kudos to the highest degree. EVERY time I hear it I'm reminded how GREAT Ozzy's band was at the time and how we will most likely never hear anything like it ever again. Honestly, nothing after this album held a candle to those first 2 albums. Both of em masterpieces in old school metal. The 2 biggest reasons I still have loads of respect for Ozzy to this day.

I'm a bass player by trade, but I got ahold of a guitar magazine that had a whole spread on Randy, and a bunch of his riffs, and the transcript for this song. What an awesome song! Learning to play this song on guitar was like taking a little journey in Randy Rhoads' mind. Just an awesome collection of awesome riffs.

2:20 this riff is way ahead of its time. for the most part you didn't hear bands playing with tonality like this until 90s post-rock, math rock, etc

I find this song perfect. Right from those sombre opening acoustic guitar notes. It's a funereal, evil progression. Absolutely one of my favourite Ozzy songs. Epic close to this historic album. 🤘🦇🤘

40 years old today, this album is. This was one of the main introductions of rock/metal in my life. I was around 12 when it was released. I remember looking at the album cover just mesmerized. It was, to this kid, spooky, mysterious and plain awesome. To put things in perspective, Ozzy was, around this time (1981-'82), hugely popular among my middle-school peers. Kids wearing Ozzy shirts in MIDDLE SCHOOL! I dare anyone to find Kida that age to be into metal like that. My kids aren't. Its just different times now. Glad I was there to experience it. I remember hearing on the radio about the plane crash that killed Randy. It was tragic, and still is to this day. DOAM is the zenith of Ozzy's career to me. Theres not a weak track on it and the production is great- many steps above the amazing BOO. The band was firing on all cylinders and it shows on this record. Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake were very important to the success of Ozzy's career at this time, and you can hear how things worked in Daisley's book 'For Fact's Sake'.. Many thanks to this album, it made a difference in my life- and still does.

This may be my favorite Ozzy song. Erie, mournful vocals, with masterful lyrics by Daisley, and the soulful playing of Randy- it's one of the best heavy metal songs of all time. One section is in 9/5- how crazy is that?

Every time the whole "Sanity now is beyond me" part happens, I get a chill that starts at the top of my head and travels right down my body...NO other song has EVER done that to me... weird...the power of music!!!...

Around 4:12 where it begins the step down to one of the darkest badass riffs in all of rock and roll history into Randy's lead I think is the crowning jewel of all their work.

The highest level of musicianship and excellence standards

One of my top ten favourite songs of all time. It's a fucking masterpiece, it really is. The whole album is incredible and then you get this amazing song towering above the rest at the very end of the album. Superb stuff.

I saw Randy play with Ozzy 13 days before he passed. March 6th 1982 in Birmingham Alabama. Never forget it less than 2 weeks later I was heartbroken. I was just a senior in high school.

Listening to Randy Rhoads' guitar work on this song is akin to listening to the greatest classical composers of all time such as Beethoven or Bach as he wove his classically trained style into a metal sound that no other guitarist could ever emulate, in my opinion. His chords and song structure were unlike anything of its kind in metal music at that point in time. While there have been many a talented guitarist after him, there was only one RR! I've loved Ozzy's music ever since he was in Black Sabbath and his first 2 solo albums are two of the finest metal records ever recorded. I'm 54 years old now and every time I listen to either album I'm brought back to my youth of long hair and headbanging. I did read some negative comments in here about Ozzy and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I choose to celebrate this incredible music and not dwell on supposed character flaws that certain individuals may have. Why not just listen to the damn music and just enjoy it for what it is and not delve into the drama of what happened or didn't happen 40 DAMN years ago?! Music in my opinion is meant to be enjoyed, not just pick it apart! Just sayin!

Randy's mom was a musician that ran a school to teach. He started at a age way before he could do anything except say no, or mom.

If Mr.Randy was alive today, I'm pretty sure he would not only still Rock but would also play Spanish guitar with symphony orchestras. Ala Andres Segovia. ❤️

Randy & Ozzy crafted a masterpiece when they wrote this song. This song really showcases how incredibly talented Randy was & how ahead of his time he was. Even the background tracks are amazing he had so much going on & I learned that Diminished chords are awesome when I learned parts of this song. This has always been my favorite Randy song. Just amazing & incredible today as it was the day it was released.

I was about 13 years old when diary came out and I would walk around my neighborhood wearing out the cassette in my “portable stereo” lol. This song is beyond phenomenal! Always been my all time favorite Ozzy song. Fire In The Sky is a perfect prequel to this. Tells a tragic and beautifully dark story about mental health.

My first live show. May 20 1982 Hartford. 15 years old and I would love to relive that night. It was only 2 months after Randy died and you could feel the loss that the band was feeling.

I heard Blizzard of Oz at 10 at a neighbor's house while playing pool and I remember hearing it and something just struck me. It was like a religious experience. I had never been so excited about anything. I couldn't get it out of my head and when my birthday came a couple weeks later I went to the mall where I ok new the guy at the record store and went straight to the Ozzy section where I found the just released Diary of a Madman album which my friend recommended and said he would make me a tape of Blizzard if I wanted that one and also a album by another group with a brand new singer was recommended and he wasn't letting me leave without it. It was ACDC Back in Black. These were the first 2 albums I had ever bought with my money. Til then it had been my brother's stuff I listened to. I felt this album I felt the emotion Ozzy spoke to me like a best friend I had never known I had til then. I cried listening to Tonight and Diary with Diary hitting me like a hammer and a realizing that I wasn't alone in the world. I didn't know or understand me at this age I had been bullied for years in school for my weight and the fact I was blind without glasses and try that I was so bad at the simplest school yard games as I also had a birth defect of having almost no hip bones that I didn't find out about til I was in my 30s but I could also turn my feet 300 degrees around with almost no effort. I thought I was double jointed and so did everyone else. This left me unable to run or even kick a ball straight on as my eyes cost me depth and legs caused my feet to do a reverse of being pigeon toed which I couldn't control without extreme constitration after being made fun of and ridiculed it made me different and no one understood hell I didn't understand at that time . I thought I was just that bad at things I didn't know until 5thbgrade I needed glasses so I was in a different world than other kids. I felt alone and I wanted to die if life was not any better than this. I felt different and although I was very smart and made As on tests I never did in class work as I couldn't see the board but I didn't realize it was that and would just stumble and tumble while I was laughed at when trying to answer which made it all worse. I taught myself from my books at home and was away ahead of the class in my studies so I felt no need to do homework for stuff I already knew. So bad grades came even though i made As on tests and was often accused of cheating. I know this is stuff most of you won't read or care about but if you have kids please tell them about how bad bullying and making fun of and going along with others doing this can damage someone who isn't on control of why they are different. It takes a better person to go against the rest and stand with someone and against their pears but as my daughter did this it makes loyal friends and shows the better and changes minds of others who may not have felt good or right bullying and give them the courage to stand up for those that are in similar situations as I was. Parents pay attention to your kids because you may not know and they may not talk about any of these things or how they feel and it's not your fault but if you talk to them about acting against others they may come forth with something that's happening to them. I wish i had been afforded such luck and to feel the sorrow and pain and loneliness I felt then. No one deserves to feel what I did at any age and had it not been for Ozzy and songs that expressed what I felt and the feeling that I wasn't alone at least. Someone understood when I thought there was no one. It saved my life I have no doubt about this as I had been thinking of suicide for a year or 2 at that time and we are talking 5th and 6th grade. A time when a kid should be a kid. Back then you didn't talk about shit with anyone and there wasn't anyone to talk to. You just held all that in. Hey it's Gen X and although there was others I didn't know because of just the way it was. This album was like medicine to me Back in Black helped me harden up and quit taking it which i never did again after elementary school. I see school shooters and remember the first time it was a national story and think if not for things like this album and if I had parents who kept guns at home that I could have reached I probably would have used one on myself but I will not say that I wouldn't have lashed out with anger at my classmates. Had I been able to obtain a gun it's possible that many would have not made it and I wonder if any of them have any idea of what they had caused or the anger and hopelessness something like that requires. The self loathing for being different the anger against God even for allowing me to live like this. Since I almost died 3 times at birth I did think that I had not been meant to live and this was my penance for living. If you think I was the only one or that there isn't kids that feel this to this day your not in reality. Everyone of you who ever was or is a part of actions against there classmates even just what might seem like simple joking around can be so damaging to someone who like them has no real sense what's right or why they are wrong or why they are like they are or can change it. You don't understand and if we let our kids go with kids being kids and we don't force ourselves to take the time and emotion to explain why they shouldn't do this and make mistakes this is the parents fault not the school or society or the music or movies. It's a horrible lack of parents doing their jobs of teaching what's wrong or right or their own stupidity of not realizing what they were so they just produce more of these people. 8m trying to save that kid who's alone and is in the middle of a crowd. That it might not be that they are just loners it might be that they are in a much worse state off mind and most kids want to play and be part of things and to be shunned and shut down at every turn is horrible mental pain at that age. .... Which you really may have no idea of. I know what I was and felt and I hope no one ever feels like that. I still have these feelings come up after all these years and it's affected my entire life and is why I'm alone now writing this. Don't let this happen to your children. Want to make things better? Then put parenting at the forefront of life and not your need for a boat or new gold clubs. It's better to be without things but with love and feeling and caring and being a part of caring about every kids life as they are just the reflection of what we create. It's not political as no kid gives a shit what political party you follow it's about you. Quit blaming everyone else. The school isn't to blame anymore than it's possible that bad people or ones just as devoid as any others of the required attention and feeling to be a teacher anymore than they are parent and there are many of these people. Only you as parents can ask and talk to others and get to know the teachers and listen to what your kids say and don't just say it's kids being kids because that's not the way it is. Kids are what they see and feel and most of this comes from home. It's your responsibility and it's not a books fault or school or movie or music or political party. Church isn't the answer either it's just as bad there. Remember that. Turn the game off put the beer down and do your jobs as parents and if your a parent that lives with anything like I'm talking about then it's time to get help and you do need it and you know you do. Quit thinking about what your buddies will say and go get that help for you and your family or it's only you to blame for what happens. Thank you Ozzy for helping me. I hope this helps someone else.
