The music provokes very sad feelings but there is also a very sad story behind it. Arvo Part had always wanted to meet Benjamin Britten and saw him as the only composer he had something in common with. But since Estonia was under communist rule, Part could not visit Britten in the United Kingdom. The year Estonia opened up Britten had already died, thus Part wrote this composition as a sad memory for missing a friend just too late. :-(

Part says he became familiar with Britten’s work only shortly before Britten’s death in 1976. Getting hold of western music was difficult in Estonia. This was composed the following year in 1977.

@@sailordog1414 Brahma BY RALPH WALDO EMERSON If the red slayer think he slays, Or if the slain think he is slain, They know not well the subtle ways I keep, and pass, and turn again. Far or forgot to me is near; Shadow and sunlight are the same; The vanished gods to me appear; And one to me are shame and fame. They reckon ill who leave me out; When me they fly, I am the wings; I am the doubter and the doubt, I am the hymn the Brahmin sings. The strong gods pine for my abode, And pine in vain the sacred Seven; But thou, meek lover of the good! Find me, and turn thy back on heaven.

Arvo Part has said of this work: “Inexplicable feelings of guilt arose in me. Just before his death I began to appreciate the unusual purity of his music… And for a long time I had wanted to meet Britten personally - and now it would not come to that.”

the phrasing, "and now it would not come to that" is like the exact kind of controlled falling a part grace that the music evokes, its like... it is the music, this music phrases loss like, and now it would not come to that. So differnet from saying, now it would not happen. It would not come to that tries to paint it like it was sort of a misshap, like it was on the way from happening but something in the process failed

“What kind of music is this? Whoever wrote it must have left himself behind at one point to dig the piano notes out of the earth and gather the artificial harmonics of the violins from heaven. The tonality of this music has no mechanical purpose. It is there to transport us towards something that has never been heard before.” Wolfgang Sandner

So moving. I have listened to several performances on YT and this my pick-although I wish the final bell-note had rung out a little more. Such intensity from the conductor. But if von Karajan were alive today he would say to Kristjan Järvi, as he did to a then-young conductor friend of mine, "Sehr gut. But they should be sweating, not you!" Indeed. some of them are.
