These are some clips from Airshow Dispatches S04E03 - if you enjoyed it, you can watch the full 50 minute film free here: thisisflight.net/videos/airshow-dispatches-s04e03-antidotum-airshow-leszno/ It includes much more of the Flying Bulls' warbird performances, including a sunset show with all four of these aircraft in formation.

The superchargers tend to mute the exhaust note just a bit. Even if they are non functional the exhaust is still routed out the top and rear on the booms. If you look carefully at tthe first 3 to 5 seconds of the video, you can see where the exhaust is coming from on the tops of the engine. I'd guess they are using a standard smoke set up. Injecting mineral oil into the pipe producing the smoke trail.
@83zillafan
@83zillafan Год назад
instead of belt driven superchargers the P-38 has turbochargers which uses energy from the exhaust used to spin the turbines, naturally the turbine housing acts as a muffler so most of the engine noise is quietened and most of the noise you hear is airflow / propeller blade tips.

@@83zillafan Dude, no. Normal war-model p38's have a compound charging system with a gear-driven supercharger and a turbo. This is the white lightning, previously owned by Lefty Gardner. It has no turbochargers. Normal p38's are even quieter with turbos.

N25Y is one of the most BEAUTIFUL airplanes EVER. As a kid, I had the privilege of seeing Lefty Gardner fly her in MANY CAF airshows, and, as an adult (air traffic controller at Bakersfield, CA) I got to watch good ol' Lefty fly one of his last airshow performances with her. The grace with which he could fly that (then) beautiful white Lightning was literally AWE INSPIRING!! She had a few very rough years after Lefty stopped flying her, but it is WONDERFUL to now see her, all polished, flying with the Red Bull team!!

No wonder P-38s were called Cadillacs by their pilots...They had full exhaust systems instead of just short stacks. Their hidden manifold pipes went back to 2/3 fuselage powering the Turbo-Super-Chargers then vented upward... Keeping the P-38 "Quiet as a Cadillac"... Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt had an exhaust system too. Same thing as running tailpipes out to the back bumper on a car and then angling them downward.

Beautiful aircraft. Some interesting information you may not know; the P-38 was an overall better aircraft than the P-51. Believe it or not, the P-51 was only 600lbs lighter than the P-38, yet made roughly 50% less power. The P-38 was faster at all altitudes, but above 12,000 feet, the P-38 would outperform every other WW2 aircraft in the sky, in all categories. While the two aircraft's turn performance was similar above 300mph; below 250mph, the P-38 had better turn performance than the P-51. The P-38 also has flown more pilots to become ACE's than any other fighter in American history.

The P-51 was way cheaper to produce. Often costs win out over other factors.

The P-38K with the Hamilton props, from the 2 prototypes smoked what became the L, fools refused to shut down some other stupid aircraft production lines that never saw the light of day. They whined about shutting down the line, instead of gravitating to one of the many unused craft. Literally crushed many of the leftover P-38.s
