I own both and actually prefer the Gen.1 better. In fact, the Gen.1's have been my daily and I was looking forward to the Gen.2's. If I hadn't worn them already and made a mess of them, I'd actually return the Gen.2's. Why the Gen.1's are better: 1. They have more room in the calves and sit better at the waist. 2. Even though it adds weight, the cordura reinforcement provides more confidence and the stretch through the entire seat provides much better flexibility. 3. The Gen.1 pants have a more intuitive pocket setup. The front pockets were larger on the Gen.1's (even though I wish they had a more durable liner material). And I love the larger slip pockets posterior thigh- as it's much better for a phone or a mag than the new one, which sits right on your hipbone. It's not comfortable to sit down with a mag/phone in the Gen.2 pants. The pocket on the Gen.2's will fit an AR mag- but the draw is much more cumbersome than on the Gen.1 pants. 4. The Gen.1's have zippers on the sides that act as vents or additional pockets. Super helpful and genuinely breezy when moving. The new ones are lighter, but actually feel hotter. 5. The D ring on the Gen.1's is super helpful to hang gloves or a carabiner from. I get that it's more 'tactical' looking, but it was genuinely useful. ** The ONLY advantages I see from the Gen.2's is that they are indeed lighter (but without the reinforcement I'd prefer to have), come in more colors, and have a touch more flex in the waist. I have no care for the belt system on a pair of urban pants- and I never had an issue putting a battle belt over them in the first place. The rear pad on the Gen.2's is nice for lumbar, so that's good. I truly hope UF Pro continues making both generations- AND MAKE THE GEN.1'S IN NAVY BLUE AND GREY. Why discontinue these and keep so many previous generations of other pants? I would readily buy a few more pairs of the Gen.1's, but probably won't be interested in any more Gen.2's. The feel of the Gen.2's is much more Lululemon than the UF Pro I know ... and that's not a compliment.
Also prefer the old one...wouldn't go without side pockets with some zippers. Remember that the gen1 isn't produced anymore and you might not get any in a few months.
