The new Der Big Red Max kit from Estes is a great starting point for all sorts of cool projects. Using a set of warbird decals from Callie Graphics, this model became a P-51 Mustang Max!
EDIT: For those of you who are not model rocket people here's an expanded description of what is going on here. The Der Red Max design is a stalwart of the Estes line, having first appeared in 1971. Since that time it has been released in at least five different variants, from tiny to really big. The latest version, Der Big Red Max, is based around a 3" diameter body tube and stands about 29" tall. Simply put, it is just a big, simple rocket, and a good set of basic parts for experimentation. Since so many rocketeers have built so many of these over the years, many hobbyists modify their builds significantly with unusual paint jobs. In a response to the German theme of the original, this one was painted like a P-51 Mustang, complete with D-Day invasion stripes. Look for one painted like a C-47 soon.
