P0442 Code / 2007 Chevy Suburban Purge Solenoid Replacement

Guys in this video I'm replacing my purge solenoid in my 2007 Chevy Suburban with the 5.3L engine. I have the code p0442. It is talking about a small leak. Most of the time this code is trigger by the purge solenoid not work correctly. The purge solenoid is about $36 and if that not the problem. It is probably good to replace it anyway. But I think that is the problem.

Great video, especially in regards to have to detach the solenoid. GM should have put out a book on how to undo all of their different connections.

Just wanted to say I followed your video in changing my solenoid on my 08 Tahoe LTZ when I took out the old one it looked nothing like the AC Delco one I bought, however once I changed it and started the car up the check engine light remained illuminated. I reset the code and drove the truck for over 100 miles and it did not come back on thanks for the video and it was an easy fix!

Smart driving the Suburban as long as it's an older one - quality has been in decline. I have a 2001 with over 300,000 miles AND it doesn't use any oil whatsoever!!!! I drive it a lot in Mexico on summer visits to Puerto Vallarta - nice "narco" car where no one ever pulls out in front of me. I just did this job on a 2006 GMC Denali - the car wouldn't keep running until I replaced it. Note that it's good to replace the tube leading toward the firewall, because it's made of plastic and it gets very brittle with age - I ordered that part, but used duck tape to keeps the one I have in service until I can replace it. Seeing the videos is nice so no one breaks tabs or loses the clips.

How glad am I that I watched this before I tried it? 100%. Thanks for the great detail! I heard you can test the bad solenoid by dunking the narrow end in a glass of water and blowing in the tube. If it bubbles; that's bad and your issue.

Perfect! I replaced mine and my check engine light did not go off either. So, I thought maybe I did something wrong or that there was another issue possibly. Your video was helpful on that yours didn’t go off either. So, I fee much better now and we shall see what happens

I had to buy a cheap smoke machine off eBay and run smoke down the purge solenoid hose to find my problem. Which was a bad o-rind on the return line on top of my gas tank in the back. No, I would not recommend that. That hose is made to go over plastic the nipple. I would just go to the part store and show them what broke and get a new. It can’t cost more than $3. Just do it right and you will not have to redo it on side of the road somewhere.

I switched mine yesterday... ran the scanner.. still pops up. But wondering if it days to be "ready".. like for the emission testing. But good detailed demonstration 👌

That code should stay gone if you have cleared. Most codes have to be cleared before the light goes away. But if yo cleared it and it comes back then you have something else wrong. When I changed mine. I found that was not my problem. He is a link to my other video when I found the problem. I had a bad o-ring on a hose coming from the top of my gas tank. I had to put a smoke machine on the purge solenoid hose to find it. after I had changed my vent valve. I found the problem about 5 min before the end of the video. I hope this helps.

My 2009 tahoe ltz 5.3 doesnt have that green cap.... its just a straight vaccum line is it supposed to have that green cap

That’s a good question. Your Tahoe is two years newer than mine. Maybe they change to a straight hose on your model. I don’t know the answer to that.

Everywhere I search for it Amazon eBay says the str8 line is the rite one and the one with the green bleeder cap is the wrong one even tho that one was originally on my 2007 Chevy Tahoe as well kind of confusing and when I got one off a 07 Tahoe at pullapart it had the green bleeder cap but everybody online all the part stores says that's the wrong one with the green bleeder cap wtf 🤔🤔🤔

That is a good question. I think you if you have the truck running and you disconnect the purge solenoid and remove the hose going back to the vent valve. If you feel any suctions the purge solenoid is bad. If there is not suctions it should good. I think from what I read.

How did you determine it was the purge solenoid?

The first sign was the check engine light came on and the code was the P0442. That is a evap code so, I know it was something in the evap system. The purge solenoid was the easiest and cheapest thing to get to and replace. So, that’s why I started with that and I could test it by blowing into it. If you can blow through it when it disconnected it’s bad. It should be closed with no voltage going to it. That’s how I determine it was my purge solenoid.

Are you talking about the clip that holds the hose to the purge solenoid? I did know if there is a technical name for that clip but you should be able to got to any auto part store a ask for a purge solenoid hose clip. They should know what you are talking about. Sorry it tools so long to answer.

My 08 Escalade doesn’t have that purge diagnostic port. What is another way to introduce smoke into the system to find a leak?

You Escalade has to have a purge solenoid. The hose I used to interduce the smoke was the hose that go to the Purge Solenoid hose. The solenoid should be almost in the same place that mine is. And the is no diagnostic port. Find the Purge solenoid and disconnect the hose coming from the gas tank to the back of the solenoid. You may want to do s Google search to find where your Purge solenoid is located.

@@capitalr8649 that is ok. You still want to use that hose. You will have to rig up something to connect or just get the smoke into that purge solenoid hose. That’s the best hose to use for that test. It will send smoke through the entire fuel system.

I got code P0496 i checked the same valve on this video . I hotwired it and could hear it open and close, blew in it on both sides, it is Normally closed and seems to be doing what it's supposed to. Any ideas what else it could be ?

J03haNsum, replacing the value did not fix my problem ether. I found my problem to be an bad o-ring on my fuel return hose on top of my fuel tank. You may have a crack hose or something that is leaking air. I had to get a cheap smoke can off Ebay for $70 to $80 and smoke the Purge Solenid hose to see where your lead is. Here is the video where I found me leak and fixed my problem. I was throw a few parts at it first and found a $2 o-ring was the problem. Swath diver No, it did not fix my problem. I founded that it was the return fuel line on top back of the fuel tank. I also replaced the canister vent valve thinking that was the problem but no. @@gueroburban4989 I don’t think that will cause a misfire. The only way if the hose going to the purge solenoid it broke or has a crack in it making a air leak. A air leak will cause a misfire. But after I did this video the PO442 code came back. So I changed other parts but found out a o-ring on my fuel return hose was bad. Here is a leak to the video. No it did not. The light keep coming on after I replace that Purge solenoid. I ended up buying a cheap can smoke machine off ebay. Then I smoked the pipe the goes into the solenoid and found hose on top of my gas tank was leaking. I replaced a o-ring on that hose and that fixed my problem.

Germain Gonzalez Germain Gonzalez No, it came back a few days later. I had to put a smoke machine purge hose to find the leak. I had a bad o-ring on a hose on the top of me fuel tank. I would have never found it if I didn’t have the smoke machine. You can get a cheap smoke machine on eBay for $65. Just one they make with a paint can. My other show where I found the leak. The canister vent valve replacement video. I will send you the link.

Sorry for the delay on getting back to you. When I replaced mine I had the same thing. I put a smoke machine on fuel system after replacing purge solenoid. I found smoke coming from a bad o-ring on the return fuel line on top of the gas tank. After replacing o-ring light stay off. You might have to buy you a cheap smoke machine like I did from Ebay for about $80.
