There is no problem in believing Ali RA should have been 1st Khalifa. It was an election. Any of the major Sahabah could have been elected. Omar RA could have been first. Ali RA could have been second. Ali RA had many supporters. You are still be part of Ahl Sunnah with this belief. I am Sunni, and love the Sahabah, but maybe at that time, I may have supported Ali RA to be the first. The issue with Shia nowadays is the shirk, making Ali RA to be a deity (like Jesus), infallibility of Imams, hatred and cursing towards Sahabah, hitting themselves etc.
