I did not know anything about this Locomotive until I came across a Black and White photo of it with the crew standing near the engine, it looked massive and then just 2 weeks later there was a video of the prototype on RU-vid. Since then it has been at the top of my list of must-have Locomotives. I have to make a video of my layout update before it is stripped and ready for removal to another house. Martin. (Thailand)

The P2 was the most powerful loco - as measured by tractive effort - to run on the UK mainlines, with the exception of the LMS/LNER Garrets. I believe the LMS Duchess/Coronations were the most powerful measured by horsepower.

Hi Martin, it’s great to hear that it has climbed to the top of your must-have list. I’m looking forward to seeing a video of your current layout before you make the big move. Transitioning to a new space can be a huge undertaking, but also an exciting opportunity to redesign and enhance your setup? Best of luck with the move, and please keep us updated on your progress! Hi mate I hope you are well Yes this is stunning model As a lner fan it just jaw droping Mine had issues on 2nd radius bends. I have been told it built for 3rd radius or greater but un sure. I was missing some stuff out my details bag. Which hornby have not sent. Am hoping hornby do a p1. As for the p2 with the extra smoke deflectors analogue people are going to have to wait. @@stephendavies6949 Lol, my house was here at the time, but that was a long time before I was born. There are photos of them at Dundee Tay Bridge shed in streamlined form… they looked absolute beasts! For steam traction I have to settle myself with watching ‘specials’ coming through, although to be fair the second last one was ‘Flying Scotsman’. I have P2’s Prince of Wales and Earle Marischal. Both of these have die cast running boards. Unfortunately Lord President, contrary to what Hornby have stated on the box, does not. It has a plastic one. It clearly states on the box that it has a die cast running board. This is a fabrication. This aside, it’s a fantastic model as are the other two. I just don’t know why Hornby would fit a plastic running board to this one and a metal one to the other two.

Shades of Jenny's "Torture Track"! I thought they were Gresley/Thompson coaches too, repainted by BR into Blood & Custard livery. What was the official name for the livery? "Crimson Lake and Cream" maybe? I know the very first, experimental livery was known as "Plum and Spilt Milk". It was quickly superceded by Blood & Custard.

Hi Hilton, good review overall, I am looking to get one or both versions of the New P2 steam locomotives from hornby, definitely looking at 2002 Earl Marchal and may look at getting this version you have shown here but funnily enough I have actually had kitbuilt model of a streamlined P2 for quite a few years now, now to be fair my experience of that kitbuilt model has not been very good at all, first off I thin’ it would be fair to call it a con , I originally purchased it at a small show I want to and while it only cost me £75 it was sold to me as being a running model but when I got it back and placed it on some track it wouldn’t move, it turned out that on this kitbuilt on I had bought while there was a motor fitted there were no pickups attached to the model and because it was a kitbuilt model and because I was a lot younger at 5he time having very little experience of kitbuilt models I had no idea how to fit pickups to it, after taking it to another show to talk to a very good kit builder called Tony Wright I found out that the kit that it was built from was not very good and it wasn’t worth fitting the pickups to and getting it running, eventually at a later stage all the valve gear fell apart and it basically became useless until I found a working chassis of the hornby one that had been released, I purchased one of those and with some heavy modification I was able to fit the metal body onto the hornby chassis and then I managed to add the rest of the valve gear out of some spares I had and my kitbuilt streamlined P2 has become quite a nice model for me, great video overall, as I say definitely a model I am considering along with the Earl Marischal but think I will go for the earlier version without the double smoke deflectors on that myself.

@Proper_Chuffed 4 месяца назад
Hi David, thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like you've had quite a journey with your kitbuilt P2. Despite the initial challenges and frustrations, it's impressive that you were able to salvage the model and turn it into something you're proud of with the help of a Hornby chassis and some spare parts. I really like the later version of Earl Marischal with the double smoke deflectors; it has a classic look that really stands out. Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences and additions to your collection! Cheers, Hylt

Hi again Hylt. Your review helped to pass the time whilst waiting for a flight at LHR. I've got the older - but full fat Hornby Railways - version of Cock O' The North: a very different looking beast! But all 6 of the class are true Gresley beasts, nonetheless. Another very good review, and very much appreciated by us LNER fans. Hornby at its best is hard to beat. Nice touch reversing it into the shed alongside the much later designed (and far later manufactured) A1 Tornado. Now and again, I see Lord President for sale at model shops and exhibitions for £160 - £180, so I may pick one up. It will provide an interesting juxtaposition between it and my fleet of A4s. Hornby has announced another loco with the A4-style streamlining: a B17/5. That will be a very interesting model, as it was - and remained, even after it got the "A4 treatment" - a 4-6-0 ten wheeler! Regarding your "Hill of dispair", I guess you could name it, "Hill of Hope", because there's a first rate single malt to be savoured for those who manage to reach the top...! Keep up the excellent work, sir. You're building a brand. PS: measured by tractive effort, the P2s were the most powerful steam locos to run on the BR mainline (excluding the Garrets). The Duchess/Coronation Class were the most powerful if measured by horsepower.

@Proper_Chuffed 4 месяца назад
Hello Stephen, so glad to hear this was a good way to tithe over the time as you head off yet again! I must say, I really do like the older full ‘fat’ as you say CoTN, but thought I would wait for the Earl with extra smoke deflectors, as it just looks that much more brutish! I think at around £160 - £180 used, and in good condition, this is a good buy for that kind of price. Its an impressive model no doubt but I am quite surprised at the lack of die-cast work done on it :/

I saw the B17, I am leaning towards City of London, do you have your eye on a particular version for it? Funny little things those, they look like compressed A4s 😄 Aha, now thats an idea, perhaps we call the top of the hill ‘Hope Crest’? Thank you always for your support, both in watching and for always being so informative and having my back here in the comments, I always look out for your input on my videos, it makes my day. Speaking of brand, I am toying with the idea of potentially making a sweater or hoodie with some branding to help sort of offset these INSANE import fees. But I don’t want to get too ahead of myself.
 Impressive note on the tractive effort. I need to get around to a coronation at some point. Keep well and safe travels on your journey! Hylt

@Proper_Chuffed Hi Hylt. I think it is very important to support people like yourself, as you guys are the changing face of the hobby, creating "virtual" model railway clubs by investing your time and talents into making quality content for the rest of us to enjoy. The £160 - £180 price I mentioned was for new examples. Even 2nd generation (double chimney, extra lamps) "Hush Hush" locos in their original format have now dipped below the £200 mark, although at these prices, they won't be around for long. They are already priced at a premium in the used market. Good to see some familiar YT-bers starting to comment in your videos, and you on theirs.

@Proper_Chuffed yes I have cock o the north and lord president, both renumbered with there BR number and British Railways on the tender. How they would have appeared if not rebuild to 4-6-2. It's just a shame Hornby has taken the route of giving the appearance that the eccentric rod moves, down to costing I guess. Have no plans to purchase any more Hornby because of that issue. At the moment Bachmann seem to have eccentric rod working hope they don't take the Hornby route. Enjoyed the review.

As much as I like the P2 class, the price of these newer models was always off-putting. I may get one eventually (preferably 2007 or 2002 with extra smoke deflectors), but I've still got the older model of locomotive No. 2001, which was released back in Hornby's bizarre 'Design-Clever' era. I only got the main range version for the better lining and number shading, despite the tooling being the same as the basic Railroad Range version. Thinking back to the streamlined Lord President, I remember being very confused when I first saw a photograph of the real thing. It's just so bizarre to see anything other than an A4 Pacific with that kind of streamlining. For whatever reason, even a pair of 'B17' 4-6-0s had it as well, albeit only briefly.
