I've been into plants for 20+ years but for some reason, I didn't even realize you could buy plants online until COVID and that opened the floodgates. I have bipolar disorder and plants have been amazing. I don't know how many plants I have but I know it's at least 200. Mixing soil, their water, and just being surrounded by them is so meditative and relaxing. Not to mention they decrease my use of social media and stop me from sitting at my computer working for 12+ hours per day. One way I manage my collection is through self-watering which opens up HUGE swaths of time for pest inspection/management, propagating, and just admiring them. And, it is a huge bonus if I need to be away from them for an extended period of time.
In my experience there's two main things plants can do to improve one's mental health; 1) Interacting with plants and nature is naturally grounding and inspires good energies + all the other obvious benefits like air purification and the psychological impact of seeing greenery. 2) They force your ass to be disciplined. Watering on time. Not over watering. Responding to pests in a preventative manner. Doing the risk assessment before chopping them up to propagate. A lack of discipline is a big contributer to feelings of anxiety and depression and the responsibility of having living things to maintain makes you pull yourself together. Even more so when your plants are rare and expensive.
I think we all suffer from mental health based on fear. Fear of past is depression and fear of future is anxiety. In my own journey, through meditation and research, I realized that these fear is an illusion created by outside forces like well meaning parents and friends. Meditation is great because it helps you be in the present and observe fears that are only real in thoughts. Morning and evening affirmations also help to free us from the negative programming. Saying “ I am free, I am sovereign, I am light”. There are many other affirmations you can use as you get to understand your fears. I know this sounds woohoo but it is based on energy and it works. We all have the right to peace and happiness.
I’m watching this after a deep bout of depression and haven’t watered my 100 plants in 2 weeks. This has made me feel better knowing I’m not the only one out there who regularly kills plants. Just this year I’ve allowed 18 plants to perish while depressed. I’m thinking of downsizing my collection and doing a lot more automation. This is a topic that needs to be talked about more! Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I feel her on our plants dying. What I find difficult is I get very depressed and slack on the watering because I have SO many plants as well and get overwhelmed. I’ve also plateau and promised myself to not buy anymore indoor plants until next spring because of the guilt and shame I feel when a plant dies.
I am so sorry Jimmy, I skipped an ad because it was the Candy Man and I cannot handle it 😱! Yes, I can relate that my plants both stress me out and help de stress but thankfully I’ve been able to mostly stop impulse buying lately. I can also agree that it’s very tempting to buy multiples because it made me happy to buy said plant the first time, it’s going to make me happy again to buy it again 🤣!
Nice intent and effort but my honest opinion is you need to face the person you are interviewing. It looked and felt like you were sitting in a different direction and not looking at her…Which makes it feel strange/unnatural and I clicked off quickly because it lacked a genuine one on one connection. Good luck on your future vids!
