After a 3-year hiatus, a change in management, and a change in the geography of the fields we worked for years, PA Plow Day finally returned for 2023, bringing back many long-time attendees and several new members as well. We headed up to Dewart/Watsontown, PA once again to join the fun on April 14 and 15. A special shoutout to Dave and the members of the WPGTA who helped revive this event and made it possible for us once again. We appreciate all your effort!
I decided to travel light this year, and brought the trusty 782 and Brinly 3-point plow along with me (first time attending with a non-Deere tractor and a 3-point plow). Unfortunately I was not able to make it to the field until late Friday night due to my work schedule, but upon arrival I set up in the camping area with good friends Cory, Evan, Joe, and also met some western PA attendees Jordan, Kyle, and Todd. We spent the evening around the campfire swapping stories and having a good time.
The field conditions proved difficult this year, as much of central PA had not had any rain for a few weeks leading up to this event. The ground was dry and cracked in many areas and made for a challenge for some of our small garden tractors. On Saturday, we set out to plow one of the large fields across the road from the main farm (which we plowed in years past) - this field had several dry spots where our plows wouldn't cut in without weight added. We spent a good portion of the day plowing this field all the way to the woods. After lunch we headed over to the northernmost field which was much smaller but lighter soil and easier to turn over. Many of the other attendees had left before this field was opened up, so at that point there were only a handful of tractors left (maybe two dozen), and we knocked the field out in a couple hours. I'm definitely glad we stayed as late as we did - while the day finished earlier than in recent years, we still made the best of it and had a lot of fun. It's always a great time being able to catch up with friends and put our little tractors to work, and it's even better when there aren't any major breakdowns or failures - I think this year went very well, all things considered.
