You don’t even have to be rich. A lot of ecosystems have been ruined by people releasing exotic animals and such, and this is especially true for releasing non-native fish in waterways. These ecosystems developed a balance between the plants and animals living there for so long, so if you introduce something new it throws everything off
Sterilization is an extremely difficult task. We accompanied a team during this process and actually catching one was the easiest part. The surgery on spot in the Colombian heat was tough. And the animal had to be transported to a different place for regeneration, many hours drive through cartel lands.. There are just not enough resources in Colombia for all the hippos.

I have to tell you, hippos have the greatest PR team ever. They are consider the deadliest mammal after humans and yet people are 🥰. “Don’t harm them, they are so cute and adorable, what harm do they do?”
Very true. I think they're fun to watch...ON TV. I wouldn't feel that way if they were eating all of the fish I could have caught and other aquatic animals that live there.
The fact is any invasive species will be a big problem for the environment and other species and yes it is sad that they might have to kill the hippos cause if they don't it'll just cause even more problems for example Aisan carp cause serious damage to the native fish populations in the lake and rivers that they infest because they out-compete other fish for food and space. Carp are also thought to lower water quality which can kill off sensitive organisms like native freshwater mussels.
I don’t think a lot of people understand just how dangerous hippos are. They may have been painted as “cute and cuddly” by most in society but in reality they would rip you apart faster than most of the “scary” predators out there.
Hippos are awful, they're extraordinarily aggressive and dangerous beasts. The only 'benefit' of having them is that you can look at them, and even then you can't get close without risking being dragged under water and torn apart.
@@damnitstroubleman You say that, but there are documented cases of hippos who were hand-fed from a young age kill their owners. It's not to be taken lightly.

@@rayyanibrahim451 that’s not exactly a fair statement they have improved tourism objectively and any money that comes in to Columbia legally is good for the country regardless of who is the primary beneficiary
@@noahbutler9180 They have improved tourism only slightly. Not many people come to Columbia to see the hippos and the money is not directly benefitting the people, it is falling into the hands of the already rich who don't really "need" it. Also ecotourism in different forms (wildlife sighting tours, bird watching, fishing lodges) brings in much more tourists revenue, especially for locals.

That eco-activist basically said “noo don’t kill them they’re too cute, and make us a lot of money-I MEAN uh, they’re animals, they just wanna live :)”
If you're interested in stories about killing invasive species look into the thousands of invasive goats that they killed on the Galapagos with a helicopter and a sniper because they were eating the Galapagos tortoises same food source. It saved the tortoises
I remember that story! Super interesting way to do it, but effective ad we've seen. If anyone doesn't know what happened, they strapped a tracking collar to 1 Goat and released back into the Galapagos. That goat would find other colonies of goats, and the government would follow it and then kill all the goats from the helicopter. They would spare the goat that had the collar, and it would go and find another group of goats. Rinse and Repeat until all the Goats were wiped out
Yeah - sounds like some anti-hippo propaganda to me. They don't call Miami "Cocaine city," even though it was largely built with revenue generated from cocaine sales.
I honestly thought they were called "coke hippos" because they accidentally ingested an unsecured stash that was later found to belong to Escobar, and there were some coked out hippos on the loose and that they were causing enough trouble to need to be put down
Not sure if you know this. Hippos don't have natural predators. While extremely young, hippos are vulnerable, but the mother and father hippos will absolutely kill anything that gets close.
The only 2 things that are a threat to them (at least in Africa) are rhinos and elephants. Rhinos are stupid and can usually just be scared off, if not that horn could pose a serious threat. Elephants on the other hand have no problem bullying hippos if they want. Neither are predators tho.
Africa has large prides of Lions that will hunt them from time to time in specific conditions. Africa also does not have as many bodies of water and goes through long periods of dryness, meaning due to their aggressive and territorial nature Hippos compete and kill each other which means they kind of regulate themselves. Columbia has none of that. Which means unless we kill them now when they’re aren’t that many, their population will grow out of control until it destroys the entire Colombian ecosystem in a domino effect. The lack of education in that subject is why so many people are like “no they cute leave them there” not knowing that’s going to eventually destroy the very fish and plants they rely on to survive. When invasive species find themselves somewhere because humans put them there, it is our responsibility to take them out.
For yall information hippos r menace to society they even kill their own children and yeah a pack of lion could kill him but why tf should they its not worth lions would only do that if they have to thats means except for humans and elefants the only enemy they have r other hippos

People were educated about wildlife from Disney films. Look at the reactions when Cecil the lion was shot. People (actual adults) were concerned about his cubs not having a father. Even speculating Cecil's brother would take over their care. Lion cubs are raised exclusively by females and actually have to be protected from the males. If the cubs are killed it will make the female go back into heat and want to mate again. Male lions try to kill babies to get laid. Real life isn't The Lion King.

They shouldn't have been in that habitat to begin with. The only idiot here is you, since you cannot comprehend how these are two wildy different things.
I care about the environment, and by environment I mean my personal enjoyment of an invasive species based purely on aesthetics with no regard for the actual ecosystem...
I love the hypocrisy in humans being like “dude this species is charismatic and cute but the damage to the ecosystem is outrageous” meanwhile we’re just wrecking the planet to a degree hippos couldn’t never.
A huge part of the damage we do is introducing invasive species to other biomes tho! Like you can't divorce these hippos from their origin. They didn't swim over to South America, they were brought there!
hmm yeah and and what are you suggesting exactly? Admitting they're a huge problem and trying to deal with it somehow is literally the one way forward. For those particular ecosystems, the damage that these invasive hippos are doing is literally worse than, for instance, climate change, by becoming top predators out of the blue and severely altering the quality of water and soils, with obvious consequences for the overall health of animal (and human!) populations.
And that’s a valid reason dude. Money doesn’t grow on trees and people have their livelihoods around an opportunity that came from a person that made their lives hell, this needs to be considered as well and making a lady out to be greedy bc she’s concerned about the locals not being below the poverty line is short sighted. I’m not saying the hippos should stay there but the solution offered is not taking into account the lives of locals who will be negatively impacted
So the problem is money. The best way to get rid of hippos is to make the tourists aware of the damage they're representing. The less money natives receive from this hippo business. The more likely the people are to get rid of them
Mmmm....if you got rid of the hippos, how much of an impact would that have on the natives who make money from them? Guess the un effical soloution would be to have someone work out how many the local eco system could support, and charge a ridiculous amount for people to cull them in a big game hunt thing... are their teeth tusk like? There's a copy/pasta about this "Imagine coming to a hostile alien world and being attacked by a horde of creatures that weigh up to 3 tons, run up to 30kph, and bite with a force of 8,100 newtons." "By the time you realize they can traverse water, it's too late. The surviving members of your unit make it back by shedding their excess gear and running for their lives. The slower ones were crushed to death in seconds." "You later describe the creature to one of the humans you captured, wanting to know the name of the monster that will haunt your dreams for cycles to come" "The human smiles as it speaks a single word, slowly and distinctly, in its barbaric tongue" _Hippopotamus_
Yea. I mean if the officials could've rounded them up and dump them into zoos like the other animals, they would have. It's probably difficult to do it without harming them. I do wonder if these hippos have caused any casualty so far. Probably not, given how the locals loved them I guess.
