At a time when the Vietnam War was at its height, one man, John "Chickie" Donohue, snuck back into the war zone to find his 3 closest friends and buy them a beer.
Crazy or caring, Chickie gave his friends more than beer, he gave them hope. Hope that helped each one safely return home when the war was over. Now, 47 years later, the group is reunited to relive the greatest beer run ever.

That sargent gave him a pass for having the balls of steel to be in a war zone, voluntarily, just to give his friend a beer.

my old man did something like this in WWII. He took a row boat out to a destroyer in the Mediterranean because his childhood friend was on it. The captain said no way to let him board, and the crew howled in protest, probably thinking that it could just as easy have been their friend bouncing in those waves so far below. The captain acquiesced and he spent an afternoon with his childhood friend on a destroyer.

My great grandfather served on Coastal Defense Battleship HSwMS Sverige from 1934 to late summer 1939. Just a week after he had retired from the military to go back home to be a bus driver, Germany invaded Poland ans Sweden was on high alert. Well, we knew about the coming invasion but we didn't know how bad it was going to become in the long run. We knew about Operation Barbarossa months before it actually happened (since Sweden cracked the Enigma and the T52 German main encryptor in 2 weeks) but warning other nations of the German threats would most likely put our country in the line of fire for the German war machine. I'm just glad my great grandfather didn't have to serve in the Swedish Navy during WW2 because even if we didn't actively fight, we did protect Polish naval vessels and kept the Kriegsmarine at bay in the Baltic Sea, since Sweden was considered a great threat to the Reich because in the event of an invasion Sweden would have to be supplied by sea and there was no way Germany could send their largest vesels into the Baltic Sea, while Sweden had designed their ships to be smaller and thus more agile in the shallow waters of the Baltics.

My brother was in Vietnam in 1968-69. I was a junior in High School. My life was never to be the same. Absolutely nothing like it impacted him it additionally changed me. Looking at this short and seeing the clips awakened flashbacks of sitting in our cozy den at home watching the news ever night and beginning to pray,”Lord Keep Him Safe.” I observe him today 54 years later and see him in the clips shown in the short. They left as boys and for those that returned, they came home as men. Those boys that served in Vietnam will always be my heroes. I now have a new Vietnam hero. His name is Chickie D. 12:56

I was born in vietnam in saigon. came here when I was 6. My grandfather fought in the war and my dad grew up in it. I think the PTSD from American soldiers is from shock of living in the USA, a peaceful, nice and comfortable life. Then going to Vietnam with all its horrors of the war. The shit my grandfather and dad told me. You’d never hear or see that on any Vietnam war documentary, history books or footage. It’s much much more brutal. My father and grandfather didn’t have any ptsd as they grew up in the war. First was the french vietnam war. It was normal life for them. But if you didn’t grew up in it. It will messed you up bad. The shock and horrors. I’d be haply to go in more details of the things they told me that you’d never see or hear from any boom or documentaries

This reminds me of the end of the things we carried, where he shared the craziest story he ever heard, where a guy brought his girl friend to his out post that they shared with a bunch of sppoky green barets. They started giving her shooting lessons, then started training her, and she basically went feral. He had a theory that the crazier a war story sounds, the truer it is.

Chickie is a class act. I had the honor and privilege of installing a bell/buzzer door lock for the hog house on 87th st in NYC for the 2nd Ave subway project. The chime for the buzzer played the theme from "The Quiet Man". I had met him before and was in awe of his stature in the industry. To do a simple favor for a man like him was task. I was given a free pass to the hog house whenever I wanted to take 5. It was a hot, humid summer that year and guess what always a cold can for me. God bless.

My dad served in Vietnam He has never spoken about his experience and I expect it’s not a conversation I will have with him as his daughter This seems like one of the few light moments and I hope the movie this inspired will find the audience it deserves Veterans Day is everyday Thank you dad for your service

This sounds like a more legit comment. True to reality unlike these fake "yeah me too" stories with too many details. Many men who went to Vietnam won't speak on it. Thanks to your family for your service.

Commie Pinko here (I guess not supporting a war that has already been shown to have been started on false pretense and cost the lives of nearly 59,000 U.S. service personnel and around 3 million Vietnamese civilian and combatant dead makes me such.....according to you) . I upvoted. Good humans are good humans, regardless of their condition. Nothing wrong with supporting humans while not supporting an activity that requires the destruction of humans.

@@brandonhall5615 Not analyzing the policy of the Vietnam War, just some of the things that go on in war to make things more normal and try to in some way bring some home and comfort to the individuals who served in the military during those tragic times of the War in Vietnam. If you can't see the difference you really are a Commie Pinko.

@@brandonhall5615 hey there commie pinko. Protecting a democratic ally and fighting communism under whatever circumstance is not a false pretense. 3 million Vietnamese dead with American intervention? Welp bud, without that American intervention you can compare it to the likes of the 4-6 million under Pol Pot next door, 20 million under Stalin, or the 60 million under Mao. ALL WITHOUT AMERICAN INTERVENTION. It’s safe to say those communist revolutionary numbers don’t have a lot to do with the Americans trying to have it there way, now does it? ... but yes. I agree. Good humans are good humans.

@@kilowhiskey7973 What Democratic ally? Maybe read history, not propaganda. The South Vietnamese government was certainly not a democratic ally. This is what they call a "puppet regime," for those who never actually read the books put in front of them. I love your numbers. I love that those are always the same fucking numbers trotted out. Lets look at the "growth" of what we call Capitalism. Let's take an HONEST look at the number of people who have died in the pursuit of profit and private enterprise. Ah. That is right. It isn't something we track. It is something we readily accept. Religion and profit are the main culprits for human-on-human atrocity. You honestly can't argue that. There are many things worthy dying for, none worth killing for. Your side doesn't believe this. Fuck off.

Towards the end of this video I thought to myself "my Dad would have done this, come to see me in Vietnam." I would have said "Dad, what the hell are you doing here?" And he would have said "I came over to see you!" But that was him. The best men are filled with love and will do stuff like that. Thinking about it brought a tear to my eye.

Now this is a Real Friend! I actually saw 2 guys from my graduation class from high school in the same small fire base in Vietnam in 1969. Can you imagine? We only had 56 guys and 71 girls in that class and 3 guys are in the Marine Corps there at the same time!

the great Peter Farrelly's most ambitious movie ever. I see it's getting extremely-high POST AUDIENCE numbers, like 91% here, 88% there etc etc etc. Like everything from the Farrelly's hope it goes through the roof.
