Hero stories are few and far between. The entire Pac 12 implosion has created an epic story that has played out with dramatic flare. Thank you Spencer for keeping an occasional spitlight on it. It is going to get even more interesting soon. Through it all I have become more and more interested in the MW and how they operate and could see a reverse merger plus adding a few more strong schools. Maybe a relegation model? It would create even more drama....and that sells.

If 6 schools from the MW leave doesn't that mean that the departing schools would all have to pay exit fees? At that point it might be better to take at least 9 so you can dissolve the MWC. The other issue is still TV revenue. Yes OSU and Wazzu have a deal with the CW (which is great for them). But even if they can extend it who is to say that the CW will pay for an entire conference? And if not them who? Will CBS/Fox pay MW schools more to play under the PAC brand? Will ESPN, Apple, or Amazon step in? The PAC still has not resolved its fundamental issue. How to retain/gain new members without a solid media rights deal.
@stevedonnie4077

Personally I don’t trust AF to remain interesting/good enough long term to justify adding, but the other top 4 and probably UNLV are definitely priority. I will also say adding at least 4 AAC schools has to be a priority as well. Gotta gut the competition of their top brands and expand beyond the west coast if you want to be the premier G5 conference.

Fresno state has the highest fan attendance compare to MWC teams, Stanford and Cal. Fresno state , Boise State, San Diego state, UNLV, Colorado State, San Jose state, and Wyoming will make the pac 9 the champion conference.
@DavidGonzalez-jb2mg
@DavidGonzalez-jb2mg 3 месяца назад
Airforce makes sense given the amount of those that have served in the Airforce. Colorado Springs may not be a major market but they still have a large alumna of those that served. San Jose will likely run on the coattails of San Diego and Fresno as the Cal State system may not allow them to be left behind (UCLA/Cal precedent). This situation is ripe for a two division situation with a relegation promotion format and it would leave the door open for Calford to come back when the wheels fall off the Acc. Calford wont associate with Cal State if they have a choice but they will see soon that they chose poorly. Just bring all the MWC and have a two division format.
@Mr.Ed_Wayner
@Mr.Ed_Wayner 3 месяца назад
Tried to hit like button to be like # 1. Did not work. AF is in Colorado Springs not Ft Collin’s (CSU). I don’t think it would be smart for WSU/OSU to spend their PAC-12 kitty in paying for MWC team exit fees. Better off doing a reverse merger and add 2 central time zone schools such as UTSA, Texas St, UNT or Tulsa. Then if after 2026 they get a P4 invite, then PAC-14 can add 2 more central time zone schools.
@aBrewster29
@aBrewster29 3 месяца назад
I tend to agree. Since we’re picking on San Jose St, it’s probably cheaper to bring them along at a lower share than it is to kick them out. Also, the MW kind of needs the dead weight schools to boost the profile of the others. The few people who know the MW will know that the six Spencer listed here are good. But someone has to be at the bottom, and the nation isn’t going to give OSU or Boise State any props for beating a 2-6 Fresno State team, however that shakes out.
@stevedonnie4077
@stevedonnie4077 3 месяца назад
Schools pay exit fees, not conferences. The Pac also has the money to pay the penalty for poaching MW schools. A reverse merger would be the worst option both in terms of value and perception. Value-wise, you’re splitting a media deal more ways with lesser schools than if you just poached the best. Perception-wise you become one of a few G5 conference instead of the premier G5. Also if you merge then the G5 playoff spot is up for grabs between multiple conferences, whereas if you poach the best of the MW and AAC the playoff is basically guaranteed for the conference champ. I’ll also say poaching MW schools right as they’re negotiating a new media deal would be brutal, but it would also be an effective way to absorb value for the PAC and leave a competitor conference crippled.
@aBrewster29
@aBrewster29 3 месяца назад
@@stevedonnie4077 a lot of assumptions in there. Between the extremes of inclusion and exclusion is a whole lot of negotiating room, and this is a unique situation. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a unique arrangement come of this. As to tanking the G5 competition, you’re not wrong, but it’s not the whole picture. The MW actually has greater collective strength with a strong G5. Creating a large gap from the other G5 doesn’t help the MW if it can’t close the gap with the P4 (very, very long shot). The threat of the G5s being cut off altogether is serious. Safety in numbers.
@stevedonnie4077
@stevedonnie4077 3 месяца назад
@@aBrewster29 True, for instance in the video the him saying the ACC would survive only losing a few schools but wouldn’t expand to include the Pac2 is an assumption I disagree with. But going with that scenario, i truly believe the Pac would want to elevate above the rest of the G5 by consolidating the value of the best G5 conferences. I am an OSU fan who’s not interested in helping the MW, I want to rob it for most of its worth. Same with the AAC, Although geography makes that more difficult. IMO the goal is of course a P4 invite first, but if the Pac has to remain then the backup plan should be to create a semi-national conference that’s closer to the ACC and Big12 than it is to what’s left of the MW or AAC.

Spencer: As always, you are overvaluing your Alma Mater and undervaluing schools in the MWC. If you look at TV numbers for MWC schools while subtracting games against Power 4 conference teams, you end up with viewership numbers that are pretty bad for SDSU, UNLV (last year was the exception), and CSU. Yet you keep highlighting these schools. Nevada and UNM are terrible. But every other MWC team has TV numbers that hover in the same range… 600-700k. SJSU’s numbers are an higher. But you always ignore SJSU. If you take OSU and WSUs numbers and remove Power 4 teams, their TV numbers are mediocre. You keep creating this mythic wannabe power conference using TV numbers that don’t play out.

Valid point here. Why? No path to the big money, still on the outside looking in! MWC will hold the line and OSU/WSU will realize that they are the mid major that they have always been. They have always been a mid major with twice the money available to them than Boise and Fresno, who do more with less. Wait and see what their programs are like in 8 years without the money from the PAC (they will be like Colorado State and Utah State) and Boise/Fresno/SD will be winning the championships of the MWC. They know it and if they go down this path it will be evident that they do not operate above goals.
