This right here is proof, despite some claims to the contrary, that the Star Trek universe still has a lot to offer those who have the creative courage to explore its many frontiers and report home with those findings, in the form of productions like Pacific 201. It is my hope that, one day, when Star Trek experiences a true revival of canon productions that these fan passion projects will form a rich set of references and inspiration.

Actually many fans do not consider Enterprise as canon and truth be told all the major criticisms about it are kind of true, for one the Enterprise is far too advanced for the ST universe period, ST lore implies that after the Eugenic Wars and Nuclear war of the 20th and 21st centuries with the troubles beginning circa 2015 or so, the 22nd century had to slowly relearn alot of technologies and thus the early federation lacked transporters, subspace etc, phasers, advanced computers until just prior to the 23rd century, hence the original TOS Enterprise being very primitive to modern eyes. and Enterprise as a show became a generic planet of the week show, that showed little in the way of competence or good writing.

@@thurin84 “ dark and depressing” is a part of establishing conflict in a story- the mean-spirited part you will have to elaborate on. I object to all the cursing, but the crew loves and support one another- this can be seen in Season 2, but especially in Season 3. In fact, season 3 seems to be an attempt to have “their cake and eat it, too”- many of the episodes are, well, episodic, while still maintaining a clear, serialized story , as well. Although Burnham is still a focus, they seem to be trying to focus on the crew more- they seem to be adjusting a little to repeated criticism of her character. Now, Gergiou IS mean-spirited, but she’s also Terran, and one of the best developing characters on the show. There is a Klingon problem that they will have to address and solve, but it seems to me they are still embodying, especially this season, the ideals of the Federation. Again, it’s different, but I’ve been digging it!

I'd actually say having young officers and crew actually adds to the authenticity, since this is Starfleet in its early days. The young actors are more symbolic that way, as in Starfleet not yet knowing what dangers and challenges the quadrant still holds for them, and a lot of the crews still having to "grow up quickly" to the possibilities and the hazards of space. Looking forward to a third episode. :)

Entertaining film and story. It brought the trek that was missing back into my life. Also, I enjoyed the cast. Especially the performances of Margaret Herberner and Lindsey Williams. Some people talk about acting in fan films being wooden, but not many of them have ever directed actors, or been an actor. Often, the quality of acting is a combination of the actor’s experience, the script material, and the director’s ability to get what they want from the actors. My only critique (not criticism) regarding the acting here, is that the director needs to focus more on future productions working with the cast to make their responses a little more natural. Some of this comes with the script, as you whittle down unnecessary dialog, or let the cast improv a bit to add attitude to their characters. Body language is also very important. Subconsciously, an audience can often tell if an actor believes they are the character by subtle changes in body language. If the actor is more mimicking a prompt than being the emotion they portray via body language, the acting can seem wooden, and the audience looses suspension of disbelief. Unlike running time, scene counts, and dialog, actor’s bodies are underutilized real-estate in most films. Body language should be used alongside other layers to show, not tell, the audience more depth of the story. One example is when Vandre (Herberner) is outwardly putting blame where it is due, with Starfleet Intelligence. She is basically telling him that regardless of his opinion, he can shove his opinion, because the incident is their fault, and Starfleet Command seems to agree. This illustrates integrity of the character, which is a great theme considering the Pacifica’s class. However, her body language doesn’t really echo that of a person who has just made life or death decisions in a crisis, and made the final decision to tell her superior to more or less suck it. Which, frankly, is far nicer than what I would have said. I get that Vandre still feels doubts about what the mission’s worth in relation to the cost in lives, but having experience in similar situations where a superior is basically trying to get you to divulge information related to an investigation, while at the same time trying to convince you your perception is wrong after your statement has been made, to cover their own mistakes ... and you have already made the decision to tell that superior “too bad, your opinion is wrong” ... there would probably be a little more strength in the body language, and would have given the scene more weight. I suggest the director learn more about how to read body language, which would enhance their storytelling style, and help them with directing the cast to coax better performances out of them. But fine job all around.

Commander Alisa Andre is an example of a strong Female Character. You perfectly portray her without resulting to her sexuality, or making her insanely strong. You took the strengths of being a women and there weaknesses to create a character that you can relate with. Unlike Michael Burman, who doesn't think twice about putting her friends in danger. Who can get stabbed in the leg and bleed out for 20 minutes and be fine. I hope to see her character explored in the future.

The "strengths of being a woman" are irrelevant when sex/gender are irrelevant. This character is female but that doesn't provide her with any special strength or with any special weakness. For me, the timeless value of a true Star Trek story is the treatment of the Human Condition. I believe that was the intent of Gene's work. A good story teaches and invokes emotion - it uplifts. "Pacific 201", I believe, honored the highest tradition of the Star Trek saga - telling a story that teaches and touches our hearts. This story presents a moral dilemma and treats the value of the cost of discovery. Many times we are confronted with balancing the rules and protocols that define a society with the values that are the foundation of that society. Rules are instituted as we learn from experience. Sometimes we need to make adjustments. However, integrity, for me, is the highest priority. "Be true to thyself" is important if we have a solid moral foundation. "Pacific 201" did an excellent job of presenting a story to teach us. I compliment all those involved. The script was sound, the production team did an excellent job of presenting a believable environment, the actors did a fine job. I thank all involved. You did more that just entertain, you uplifted us. That seems to be a balance that is sometimes lacking in the industry. Well done! I look forward to seeing more of your work. I really enjoyed this production. They took a fairly simple storyline and drew me in enough that I care about the future voyages of the Pacific (even knowing that CBS won't allow them to do it). This proves that you don't need insane budgets, effects, and complicated plots to create a good story that the audience will appreciate and enjoy.

I wanna say this was an amazing fan film! First off, Im not familiar with who did the special effects, but WOW! This was top notch theatrical quality. And I want to make a specific observation here. I loved the designs, and they matched the time period. It seems to be after the Romulan wars, but maybe 40 or 50 years before Kirk if I were to guess. And you can see the progression of design. And the hulls were a light grey, almost white. I loved how the ships were brightly lit. You can see what they look like. Every detail! In modern Trek, everything is lit so dark, you cant see the ship designs good, and the editing is ADHD at its worst. THIS is how space scenes should look. Such a good job!!!!

@@markhenry9043 I definitely will when I get a chance. The lead actress did a job job, but she only had one emotion throughout the entire thing: depressed. Obviously the plot requires that for the part, but except for the end, I would have liked to see more range. But still, a great job! Those effects man….movie wuality. Not only did you create multiple outstanding looking exterior shots, and multiple ship models that in my opinion all fit in the Star Trek universe seamlessly, but you actually made a story that unlike most other fan made Star Trek productions, had beautiful interior sets and actors to play as the crew, the amount of money and effort put into this must’ve been baffling. The production quality of this short film is outstanding and the results are absolutely stunning. 👍

@@k1productions87 Fans are fans. They do a ST fan film because they know other fans want to see better ST stuff than what we're getting from Jar Jar Abrams and Anikin Kurtzman. A totally unexpected and tragic end; but an end not entirely without success. It is a bitter-sweet irony that triumph and tragedy go hand in hand . . . What is the mission of the United Earth Federation, if not to ...“explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before!” - - For centuries, many lives have been lost, even sacrificed in pursuit of human progress and human exploration - for mankind to be where it is at the dawn of the 23rd century. Many more lost lives may well be humanity's lot in its existence, the further we penetrate the dark void of interstellar space-to continue the conquest and colonization of deep space. - - If we believe the benefits to the human species are worth the risks, then it is incumbent upon us and Starfleet to ensure that the men and women who died, did not die in vain; and except the reality that we will morn the loss, and honor the sacrifice of those who will likely die in the performance of their duty, and in the service of mankind.

"We could have a war with Romulus" so let's damage or maybe even destroy a neutral ship that offered its assistance, as a means to avert said possible war and not create an act of war. Yeah, and let's do it as underhanded as possible, for the greater good. Who wrote this script?!?

Scared people don't always make the smartest of choices. Especially when they've convinced themselves of something they think is worse. In this case; they think vital Starfleet tech is being handed over while the crew is going to be killed. Flawed thinking, but not all that unbelievable. Just look at the conflicting opinions on Corona virus. Some of them are pretty out there, on both sides, yet people believe them. Not that crazy to think a couple of crew members, because of fear, would drive themselves to equally flawed thinking.
@Johnlanzer
@Johnlanzer 3 года назад
Not quite since you have to consider that the United Earth still remembers the Xindi Sphere and the fresher Earth Romulan War. Starfleet is looking for ways to bridge the technological gap with the clearly superior Romulan Empire. It is is irrational and underhanded, but this is very possible since the goal is to steal technology for Starfleet's benefit. But not a decision to be made by cooler and even tempered minds which is hinted to be leading the overhaul of Starfleet, as stated during the interrogation.
@ShrekMeBe
@ShrekMeBe 3 года назад
Mutiny and sabotage is SO not the way I remember Star Trek. Also, on a moral level, ok, you strongly believe someone is giving your classified technology to your former enemy and that you will probably be killed to cover the affair, does that justify (to yourself) actually doing the killing of lots of people? Plus create an incident for the political game? You'd have to be pretty unhinged. You, as starfleet sailor, have elected to work in the most dangerous environment known to men, where death can occur anytime from a myriad of causes. You'd have been tought to deal with that prior to setting foot on the flagship, to keep your calm and work the problem through channels etc. Mutiny and sabotage are the STD way I'd not want perverting the waters in fanmade Star Trek
@Johnlanzer
@Johnlanzer 3 года назад
@@ShrekMeBe As stated in both our statements, the ones who made the mission are *not of clear mind* and I did state that this is a post Romulan War Starfleet. The very early days of the Federation, and the NCC-201 is NOT a Federation ship but of the United Earth itself. The people leading Starfleet as of this time still remember the horrors and lost from the Xindi and Romulans. This is a setting that Starfleet IS still learning to hold itself to its moral code and conduct. This is not the Starfleet you remember or what we came to aspire, because this is Starfleet before all that. Imagine this as one of the stepping stone that leads to the Starfleet of the United Federation. As you can hear from the interrogator, some people are leading the way to overhaul Starfleet in the aftermath of Pacific 201. That's the hint that this is a point in Starfleet's history to change.
@ShrekMeBe
@ShrekMeBe 3 года назад
@@Johnlanzer I was talking of the crew mutineers and how easy to extreme action they seem to be, and not of the mission planners. The mission contained a intelligence gathering part, in open space, from a ship belonging to a rival power. Fair, we do it, they do it, both know the other is doing it. The situation was civil, both ships would have flown away without incident. Even during the height of the Xindi incident, I do not remember the Enterprise crew so eager to lash out and immediately go to extremes. Even then, extremes would not have been justified. I believe a better story would have been with the crew showing concern about espionage and their lives, talking this to the first officer whom they feel on their side, everyone remaining tense but lucid while the romulans completed their maneuver and disengaged. As ending, the crew expressing their reluctant thanks to a former enemy and both ships going their separate ways. Or, even better the romulans trying something, a data worm modulated in their tractor beam, which caused the explosions on the Pacific. Or, even better, the explosions are a unexpected side effect of coupling two technologies in an unstable environment. The romulans stay neutral and disengage after completing the maneuver, the crew realizes they probably overreacted, and the episode ends on a very different note.
