I made an ebook with a lot of information about the road trip and some of my favorite spots + a link to the map which has all of my stops on it. You can purchase it here if you are interested - payhip.com/b/PUkme
I'm a lifelong California resident and you do such an excellent job of showcasing well known spots as well as great hidden gems. The fact you are so informative about navigating certain areas, traffic conditions, costs/fees, family friendly spots and good eats is truly appreciated!! Love when you dad, wife and children join in the fun too. Great work , thank you.
AGREED! Love all that you do and share with us Josh & Pops & family, keep it up, and thanks! Your videos & pages are the best travel resource ever! Use your tips on ALL my roadtrips.. we've now done every CA national park & some farther on our EV, your tips invaluable!
I'm also a Northern California Native, left to the Midwest 1977 to current. Loved driving from East Oakland Hills to Half Moon Bay and to Santa Cruz, stopping along way just to view the scenery along 17 Mile Drive, in my Black 1953 Studebaker Commander Starlight V8 Coupe.
@@UTNavySeabee289 niiiice!!! I'm looking to relocate to the Midwest soon. Love both areas for their own beauty ... the smell of California to me will always be cottonwood bush, eucalyptus and sea salt while the Midwest is pine, cedar and maple. Beauty is in each state and @californiathrumylens always captures it nicely
Yes C, we moved from Walnut Creek, CA to Olathe, KS in 1977, currently in Westwood, KS., pulling my 1956 Stude Sky Hawk Hardtop with 4.7 V8 260hp and 21ft Jayco Cardinal RV with 1974 Pontiac Grand Safari 455 V8 Bonneville Wagon across 50highway all the way to NE Kansas
You and your Dad are such a treat. The camaraderie between you two is heart warming. My Father and I were never close, and he mostly was a bully so seeing you and your Pops together as you journey, along with your excellent narration , give us quite an experience.
@Rodney Morgan Brown I know for sure that I am blessed to have the relationship we do. I didn't have the greatest relationship with my father either. Tried to switch it up this generation. God bless friend.
I wish my mom was still here to go on my 🛣️ trip bucket list with me. Unfortunately, she passed away 3 years ago. Enjoy every moment you can with your dad.
@@popshiking you look like the dude in the video. Edit: Great video, very interesting. Have you or your son thought of dropping by Cerro Gordo? The ghost town outside of Keeler, California. A guy has bought it and is trying to open a new hotel etc. He also has a RU-vid channel that has grown massively since he started living there in 2020 during the lockdown.
I'm 76 and retired. I thoroughly enjoyed you taking me along on this amazing road trip. I'm an invalid and cannot get out anymore to see the wonderful places there are in this country. I had always heard of the PCH but never had the chance to drive it. You made that possible, and I didn't have to stop at a single red light or pull over to fill the gas tank. I subscribed and plan on watching all of your travel videos. Thanks for giving me 2 enjoyable hours today.
DR, same here i have seizures and prefer not to drive much. So these guys are great. There are also some great train rides that people have taken and video taped that are also assume to watch.
We're so happy that we can be a part of your travel plans. We'll be making more videos in the weeks, months, and years to come. Our next big trip will be from Portland, OR to Baja Mexico. I hope you join us as soon as we get the video up. Thanks for watching.
I am 72 and can no longer afford to travel anymore nor am I able to do that much walking. I really enjoyed you and your dad’s 7-day road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway. You and your dad made the trip possible and informative so I just wanted to say thank you for the enjoyable and unexpected opportunity.
As a born and raised Californian, I always tell friends in other States about how diverse and beautiful this State is. Your videos do a great job showing off our State, and I always learn something from your personable commentary. This episode was definitely epic and one of your best. Keep up the good work, and thanks for all you do!
@@kingeleven3820 Sure dude, if you're chill/relaxed and reside in California you can call yourself Californian. Who are we to gatekeep? Hopefully you've lived here atleast 5 years (maybe thats a good number, idk). Anyways travel around to different areas of CA, go on adventures (the experiences will rub off onto your soul and then you'll DEFINITELY be Californian)
Thank you for doing this. Older, retired. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. I always thought I lived in the coolest place on the planet. There are some disturbing changes going on. You unfortunately got to witness some of the crime with the break in. Things like that break my heart. California is stunning beautiful. I used to travel in my work. I have been to some cities in your videos. Since I was working I had very little time for exploration. My dream now is to take a similar to road trip. I currently have health challenges. This video has given me inspiration to try to get better. In the words of Willie Nelson "Can't wait to get on the road again."
One of my most favorite things about your videos is that you spend time with your dad! I’ve done a lot of California road trips with my sister and she has cancer. We committed to seeing as much of California as possible. Her health has recently had some setbacks and seeing your videos always remind me of our trips. Speaking of, she got goosebumps at La Purisima! I spoke to some of the docents and one told us about Padre Junipero’s room. They always tidy it up every night before closing and In the morning, the bed always looks like someone had slept in it!
Many, many years ago I took that trip with my three sisters, one of who I lost to cancer. I have the pics and the dear memories too. Enjoy each other and so glad you had the chance to do this with your loved ones.
Thank you for bringing this experience to everyone. I'm from Santa Monica and i graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu..but i just wanted to tell you that your relationship with your dad is wonderful. I just love you for that...You are making great memories with him..I lost my dad in 2019 and wish i could have done this with him...thanks for sharing your relationship with the world!!!
I've been in California since I was 7 years old. I'm still here at age 70. I love the Pacific Coast Hwy and I've been to all of these coastal beaches. CALIFORNIA ROCKS! Great surfing beaches! Plenty of restaurants! Piers to walk!
TOO BAD IS GOING DOWN THE CRAPPER WITH THE FORCED AFORDABLE HOUSE , WOKE POLIITICS , AND GOOD OLE ALL AROUND SOCIALIST DRIVEN AGENDA PROGRAMS THAT REWARD CRIMINALS AND PUNISH THE HARD WORKING TAX PAYER . ANYONE THAT ACTUALLY HAS BUILT ANYTHING OF WORTH HAS LEFT TO MORE BUSINESS FRIENDLY STATES . SOON THERE WILL BE NOTHING BUT ILLEGALS AND DRUG ADDICTS AND THOSE WHO REMAIN THAT ACTUALLY WORK AND PAY TAXES WILL BE EXPECTED TO FUND IT ALL . CALIFORNIA "ROCKED " BEFORE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT S AND THIER SLIMEY UNDERHANDED WAY OF DOING THINGS RUINED IT . VOTER FRAUD IS A REAL THING IN CALIFORNIA THE FACT THAT NEWSOME IS STILL DOING HIS DAMAGE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THAT FRAUD
Seriously, you’re the Rick Steves Cali tourism needs to retain perpetually! I’ve been but never saw or enjoyed California like this. What’s more, your love for your Pops was so heartwarming! I could imagine the fun times your family had in educational journeys growing up!
I stayed at Pigeon Point once as a kid for a school trip. The first night we were there, the wind was really bad and broke the window out. I'll never forget that trip, not only because of the window thing, but it was so beautiful.
This was very well done. I grew up in San Clemente, lived in Laguna Beach for a bit, and now live in San Luis Obispo. I have been to just about each of the spots you showed in this video. I love my California!
I watch walking tours during my treadmill workouts and stumbled across your video. I almost switched it off when i realized it was narrated but boy am I glad I didn’t. You’re a great narrator and the best part is seeing you with your pops. God bless you both 🙏🏽
Josh the State of California should give you a tourism medal for promoting their (and yours) State so beautifully to the rest of the world. Thank you so much for this amazing 1 1/2 hours of stunningly beautiful video. It is something I will never see in my life and I also got to see a bit of the little town of Lompoc where a RU-vid artist friend lives. The murals were amazing. I love that a young guy like you so appreciates awesome scenery, wildflowers, amazing trees, bridges, and out of this world beaches etc it is a rare thing is this day and age I think. I have always loved the Great Ocean Road drive in Oz but it pales into insignificance after watching this (although in itself it is a great drive). I especially loved the fantastic towering trees in your forests, your immaculate motel rooms (Australia could learn alot from them) and that really pretty little chapel with its fantastic stained glass. Again thankyou from me and my hubby cheers from Western Australia
Thanks for great video. I am from UK...77 now, but in the 70s and 80s as a BBC TV Film cameraman, I was lucky to travel to USA on 16 assignments. From flying over Mt St Helens crater in an army chinook, UNDER Brooklyn Bridge, Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestra documentaries....also drove from San Diego (Chula Vista) to San Francisco....in 3 different parts. Included filming Lee Trevino in San D....George Foreman in San F....astronaut Al Shephard in Laguna Beach....great job. Thanks for "helping the memories!"
I'm from Brazil and I don't know California. I fell in love with your video, beautiful work. Your father is also very nice! Who knows, maybe one day I'll meet these beautiful places you show. Big hugs to you both.
Thank you so much. This was so nostalgic. I currently live in Japan, but grew up in Los Angeles and live in SF for over ten years. I have driven every bit of PCH from San Ysidro to Crescent City. You hit so many places I have visited, plus so many more that I missed. Honestly, you are a far better researcher/planner than I am. I missed so much great stuff. Thank you! I love the video.
P.s., I don't know if people noticed but both you and your Dad are very tall. You're Dad is 6'7". He doesn't look tall in the video because you are also tall and shoot him from a flat perspective. If I was your camera man, people would notice. 😎
I've ridden motorcycles, camped in the '60s, stayed in a commune, rounded up bulls on a ranch and done the Big Sur tourist drive many times, Went to Cal Poly, surfed the coast, SCUBA dove here and lived in San Francisco. You made the best vid I've seen' Great work. Thanks
I lived in California for 10 years and I feel regretful for not being able to explore the beautiful state as much as I could before moving here in Georgia. I will definitely be back though to do a roadtrip. Thank you for a very well put together video of your journey! I truly enjoyed it and got a little emotional as I am missing California a little bit more.
UNLESS YOU ALSO MISS THE HOMELESS , DRUG ADDICTS , CRIME , SOCIALIST POLICIES AND ALL THE RESTRICTIVE LAWS INVOLVING YOUR RIGHT TO DEFEND YOUR LIFE , I WOULD SAY YOU MADE A WISE CHOICE MOVING TO AMERICA
When you were in Fort Brag in Northern CA, if you walk along the fence at the top to the left and hike down to the other side of the beach, you would have seen a gold mine of pottery, and glass. Everyone walks down where you went and it's uneventful, the other side is far more impressive.
I really enjoyed re-living the PCH journey with you and your father. I made the trip in 2004 of not just the PCH but the entire coast from Neah Bay, WA all the way down to Border Field State Park at the Mexican border. Watching your trip made me want to do it all over again. Especially since most of your stops were different than our stops, and you've already scoped out all the good hikes and places to eat! Thank you for sharing.
This is absolutely mesmerizing! You are a phenomenal photographer and this is narrated so well. You have captured my favorite places on earth in this FABULOUS video. I love that you travel with your dad, too! 😊
I like that dad can go with as he should to show you the rest of the ropes. Great job Dad what an awesome dad & to have one. Plus two guys on a trip is way safer than a person alone any age or two young people who don't know yet, experience gonna happen soon, but hasn't yet? Should go with someone older a role model who can show you some more ropes of life. Wonderful.
I am a native Californian ,moved away to Utah 35 years ago ,don’t travel anymore so I thoroughly enjoyed your beautiful photography and video of my home sweet home. Thank you 😊
Came across this channel by accident during the route 66 trip and have love watching your videos ever since always look forward to seeing them and how much there is out there to see in this country that we don't take advantage of
I just discovered you guys 153 minutes ago... I litterally drove Hwy 1 North to South about 12 years ago quite by accident & in the dark. It was a living nightmare. I was completely stuck! A woman; by myself on a dark deserted, never ending winding slow road! You guys brought light and life to it! I'll never think of it from my own memory again. I absolutely enjoyed every moment of this video. Thank you!
I Love this channel! very nicely done guys. Taking this trip is both myself and my wife’s dream! I live in Canada and it’s gotten so dam crazy expensive here I don’t know if we will ever have money for this trip. Really appreciate you sharing this video BTW the relationship you and your father have is priceless!
I am jealous you have all the time with your dad. My dad passed several years ago, and I miss the road trips we did on weekends. Thank you for these reminders that life is too short. I definitely loved this one and the several others you did with your dad. Route 66 was awesome video.
I can tell you're Patriots.👍🇺🇸 Watching your tour, I've decided to take my son 23 & daughter 19 next spring for a 7 day tour and follow your route...👍👏💯🇺🇸
I enjoyed you & your dad's toad trip! Watched it in the middle of the SoCal heatwave! (Much better than going to a movie theater!) I'm a California native & this brought back memories of much of my time here. Born & raised Bay Area. Worked & lived in Napa, 10 years in Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel, onto 15 years working in Silicon Valley finish off my career, then retired in San Diego. I love all these places & they hold a sweet spot in my heart. I've traveled, but nothing better than the California coast! Thank you so much!
A Pacific Coast Highway road trip is nothing short of a dream come true! Driving along the California coast for seven days is an experience that leaves you in absolute awe at every turn. The breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, the dramatic cliffs, and the endless stretches of golden beaches create a journey that is both thrilling and serene. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the charming coastal towns like Monterey and Santa Barbara, every stop along the way offers something unique and memorable. The winding roads, the fresh sea breeze, and the incredible sunsets make this road trip an unforgettable adventure that captures the very essence of California’s natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. It's the kind of journey that stays with you long after the trip is over
You are two lucky guys. It's so easy to see the love and respect you have for each other. Looking back at all the things I "should" have done with my Pops. I am father, grandfather, and now a great grandfather, so I have no excuses for not hitting the road with one or all of them. Truth is I spend a great deal of time with them. Camping, fishing & finding new ways to make Grandma crazy! Keep up the great job.
What a great tour… Thank you for taking the time to do this. As a native Californian myself (61 years now) I can definitely see I’ve missed so much of our beautiful state. I’ve been to some of these places, but have a quite a few left to explore. And one recommendation for you is in Northern California. My girlfriends and I stumbled upon this place when we go winetasting in Sonoma each year, we take a drive to Bodega bay to a small town called Jenner, we highly recommend the restaurant River’s End… Like you say - it cost a little bit more but the food is worth it and the views are worth it. You need a reservation and ask for a window seat. You won’t regret it. Enjoy!
I just discovered your videos. This one of PCH is lovely. I live in Florida now but my heart will always be in California. What a great travelogue! The relationship you have with you dad is great too. Thank you for this video!
Can’t tell you how appreciative I and others are of the information you include in your videos on accessibility for those with mobility impairments. This is invaluable information that is often forgotten by most travel reviews. Keep up the great work!
The most beautiful part of this road trip, is you making special memories with your dad. Absolutely precious and awesome. Thank you for the sharing your amazing video with beautiful video graphics and commentary.
What an epic video! I've lived in California my whole life, and have at some point driven most of PCH 1, but one of these days I want to drive the full run like you did. A couple points to add, near Big Sur, one of my favorite plcaes to camp, a place called Kirk Creek, and in Pacific Grove, out in the ocean just a little ways, a rock formation called the "Kissing Rocks."...what a cool adventure with "Pops"...:)
I'm 77 years old and I used to live in Oxnard what's a high school there it was cool knowing that you guys are there love to see it again met my husband when I was 17 and we're married 49ers he was a CB Navy patient Port Hueneme
I remember taking pch from Westport to bodega bay. I turned and there was this fortress that I was totally NOT expecting. I was finally able to visit it a few years later. The Russian influence on CA was a revelation. A great collection of Native American artifacts snd history as well. I knew native Americans were there but I never expected to see a fort. It was interesting to visit. Port arena is cool. I loved the lighthouse tour. You can stay in the houses by the lighthouse. I love the last town on the coast. The Westport hotel and the abalone pub is really cool. Next door is a little liquor store that sells great crab sandwiches. I highly recommend the Westport hotel. Stayed there several times. Has a sauna and delivers tea snd coffee and scones to you door every morning snd price includes breakfast downstairs. Best breakfast views ever.
Cant wait to escape London! My partner and I are doing this trip in 2 weeks time. Looks amazing! Beautiful beaches and In and Out Burger!!! Heaven!!!! 😛😛
Really enjoyed your whole video! I've taken that drive, from San Diego to San Francisco more than once and thought I had pretty much seen it all. You stopped at many other places I didn't know were along the coast. Your narration, the coverage of each area, and the presentation (and video) were great. You didn't spend too much time at one place and yet gave enough important info to pass along to future travelers. And one of the best parts was that you got to take the trip with your dad! Memories you will always have. Thank you for your video. (Also, your very positive demeanor added a nice touch. I'm subscribed!)
I grew up in beautiful Corona Del Mar and never got north of Point Reyes. I appreciated your showing me the coast further North and all the quaint places you stayed and yummy places to eat. That rhododendron hike looked so beautiful-your timing was appreciated. I never encountered a swarm of lady bugs-how Disney magical was that! You two are the best! Travels with my mom and other times with my husband are some of my fondest memories. Kudos for pointing out the handicapped trails-my husband is wheelchair bound so I appreciate knowing where we could go…and, If we never get there, at least you took us there.
I took this route around 8 years ago on my way to Sacramento upon moving back to CA. Big Sur and Carmel by the Sea were my favorite areas. I'm planning to take this route again within a few weeks because I hit early retirement.
You did a great job with this video and information. I was born in S.F. (my dad owned a store there for 22 years) and raised in Marin County. My grandfather was head gardener at the Palace of Fine Arts many decades ago. I remember the Sutro Baths and Playland at the Beach...it closed when I was in high school. The city is very different than when my dad had is store in the hay days of rock and roll and free love. The view along Drakes Beach in Pt. Reyes is stunning! The "leaning tree" is a cypress tree. There are Roosevelt Elk in the area. Food and lodging in Marin and Sonoma Counties are very expensive.I built a house in the Freestone hills and lived there for 21 years. You missed Wildflower Bread in Freestone...better come back to experience their bread ; ) I've lived on the Sonoma coast for 13+ years. Our coastline has been slammed the last several years. Cafe Aquatica is our favorite for tea and fresh healthy food. Our coastal highway is VERY windy and narrow so people would do well to slow down and be patient. June is a bit late for a good rhodie show...happy you were still able to see some! Glass Beach may be "anti-climatic" because people have been hauling out the glass for many years : ( This was a fun trip! My favorite was my current hometown on the Sonoma Coast : )
Love your videos, especially this one. Brings back great memories. I've been up and down PCH many times with my late wife and now continuing with my dog! You've shown me many spots I've been to and now many new ones I need to explore. Keep them coming!
We fell in love with California on our first visit to the Monterey area a few years ago. We’re looking forward to returning to the area in October. This video is so helpful in our planning. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos.
wonderful road trip ; your videos are more enjoyable and watchable than most any tv travel programs; also one can watch these 2hr epics in chunks one day at a time, just like you lived them! thanks Josh and Pops for sharing your experiences, now i want to do many of your trips with my wife and family, also those epic fish tacos
As a kid my parents took us down the Pacific Coast Hwy, Hwy 101. We loved Long Beach, WA, Cannon Beach, OR, all along Oregon coast and only as far as Eureka and Trinidad, CA. Such wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing yours. You are so fortunate to have them on video. We went in the 60's and 70's so no films.
We have been on PCH several times but missed so many of the gems and trails you shared here! Thank you for pointing them out so we can go back and explore ourselves! 🙏❤😍
I am a very lucky guy. 4th generation Californian. I live just off Hwy 1 in Cambria and have lived just off PCH at many of these locations in the video. CALIFORNIA has it ALL!!! Wouldn't live anywhere else. #3 onions add pickles. Been to the LAX in-n-out lots.
Josh and Pops , your videos are so amazing ! It brings a smile to my face to see the two of you spending this quality time together. Your vid’s are so inspiring and motivating . My wife and I want to this trip so bad. . Thanks so much !
What a fantastic video! I love your road trips with pops! This brought back many happy memories of 2 PCH road trips I did with my wife about 19 years ago (we're English)....first North to South, then South to North the following year. Just wonderful :)
EPIC TRIP!! Of course I took notes...lol! I very much appreciate it when you mention if a place is "Wheelchair Accessible!" as I use a mobility scooter. Also, I love these great trips with your POP!!!!! What great memories you are making together and makes for a multi-generational appeal! Love your videos! You are an awesome video expert!!!! :)
This was one of the most enjoyable videos I've ever seen. I've always dreamt of driving the PCH but I had no idea it had so much to see and do along it. I'm going to save this video and when I finally get the chance to do it, I'll refer to it so that I can plan an amazing trip! Thank you!
Once again a great video. I love traveling and I really like that you give time to cultural institutions like the missions here but also amusements, food, history etc. There is always so much to discover, so many interesting things and facts. I usually watch your videos on Saturday mornings for breakfast, and it always makes me want to travel so much that it's a real motivation to do something. Even if it's just a very small trip or a small hike in the area. There is always something to discover. Thanks for that!
I grew up in Oxnard and worked in Ventura, I used to love driving down the Pacific Coast Hwy, its a gorgeous scenic route, I advise everyone to take that route at least once, you won't regret it. Thanks for the memories
Thank you for making this travel video! Your filming and narration are superb! I moved to Southern California in 2018 and you've inspired me to see more of what the California coast has to offer.
That In-N-Out on Sepulveda Blvd was my first ever job in High School (Hollywood High) im a lover of planes and it was such a treat watching the a380s land since we were directly next to the international terminals, good memories, great video and perspective of my home stat! thank you, love from Brooklyn !!! but always, WEST COAST IS THE BEST COAST
You guys make me cry in the End. What a fantastic trip I live in Suisun City, Ca I am more familiar with the Bay Area and the North, and Now I want it badly to go to the South of Ca. It is so beautiful, have no words to express how happy you make me with this video , God bless your Dad, and you and I wish you guys have more trips like this together 💕
First time watching. Had to comment because your dad is just lovely. He seemed to be enjoying himself and it seems like you guys have such a good relationship. Big Sur is my favorite and your video made me want to visit it again!
Great road trip! My husband and I first took Hwy 1 back in 1972 in our Volkswagen bug. We have done it a few times since then but dont think we will make it again. You and your Pops will remember this trip. We thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you!
Wonderful narration, I enjoyed going back over the places I've seen many times, & some I've yet to see. How nice your father & yourself have such a great relationship with each other, & that he is in such good shape & was able to do so much walking. Looking forward to the next great 'eats' is a good incentive.
I drove this a few weeks ago but only from Santa Monica to Oxnard. It was my first time to California and a bucket list item was to stick my toes in the Pacific. I did that at El Matador Beach. So when you went by and mentioned it I was thrilled. I definitely will do the whole thing one day. Thank you for this awesome video.
I watched this Pacific Coast highway video for 5+ times. I appreciated your tips and information on the road. I did the the same trip with my daughter. I enjoyed your video and watched everyone of them. And you inspire and guide me (my family) to go all wonderful places/parks. Keep the great work!
I'm a native Oregonian and have been on the Pacific Coast Highway in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. I am now 80 and can't travel like I used to, but I have so thoroughly enjoyed every one of your trips. But I must say that the Pacific coastline is one of my very favorite. Thank you for sharing all of california. I'm not sure whether you have done the Pacific Coast Highway in Washington and Oregon but it sure would be worth your time not quite as many people on all of the beaches as you see in California and it's just as beautiful. I actually watch many many of your trips and do enjoy every one of them. I love watching you and your father and also I love watching when you bring your wife and twins along with you guys. Keep up the good work.
Amazing video! I love doing trips/travels with my friends but father and son trips are something special. Loved this, keep em’ coming! Cheers from Sweden!
I have to add, you should definitely come over to Michigan in the summer and do a lighthouse/waterfall tour! See the tunnel of trees and drive along M2 and visit Mackinac island and drive across the mighty Mac bridge !
Loved it. Thanks for sharing. I love the relationship you have with your DAD. Just wonderful memories. I wish my daughter will go with me one day like this oneday.
Your and your dad's videos and commentary are just exceptional. One of my dreams that haven't yet been realized is to travel the Pacific Highway and see the Golden Gate Bridge. You and your dad appear to be in good physical condition as well.
I just discovered your videos last night. You and your wife doing outstanding job. I love how you film everything. It’s so clear and you’re very informative. Thank you.
My dad and I used to go out n adventures together…. He was also a wonderful hardworking man and provider. He was a great father and I miss him. He passed away two years ago. Our last great adventure was touring Europe.
