This is the gear I'll be using on the Pacific Crest Trail starting around May 15th. A baseweight of 6.6lbs, which is all the gear I will have for this entire trail to keep me comfortable and happy! This is not much different from the gear I have used on every other trail I have hiked, and all of those past experiences on long trails around the US have culminated into this one.

The Pacific Crest Trail is 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada across the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. I am starting this hike later than typical in an effort to avoid snow and colder temperatures, allowing me to carry less gear and hike a bit faster more comfortably. Still in the beginning temperatures in the desert will be very hot, and certainly it will still get below freezing in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
My goal is to hike this trail in 100 days or less, but I am flexible and would be happy with more. I want to do it this way as I enjoy the big mile days and pushing myself, I enjoy the extra challenge, and a faster hike typically means a cheaper hike. Either way, whether faster or slower, I am just happy to be getting out there.
At this point I have hiked a fair amount and am really comfortable with what I use. I am comfortable in my experience from past thru hikes and the skills I've learned to carry very little safely and happily.
On the Appalachian Trail I carried a sub 6lb base weight, the Pacific Northwest Trail, Arizona Trail, Sheltowee Trace Trail, and my two Florida Trail thru hikes were not much different. I've always wanted to have a minimal gear setup while out backpacking. Both to avoid potential injuries by carrying less weight, to focus more on the trail rather than the gear, and to hopefully be more efficient while hiking to get the most out of every moment. It has been a fun journey into minimalism through backpacking and hiking. I wouldn't change a thing.
Though I've greatly enjoyed doing a lot of smaller and less known thru hikes, I am very excited to be returning to the PCT in my journey towards the triple crown. I've dreamed of this trail since 2016, and now is finally my chance to do it.

For the weight of your water purification, you could just add chili, onion powder, cacao, and coffee. And a drop of cooking oil, to the water. Shake. Wait a half hour. Drink. Nothing would survive that. You already need nutrition. Many water sources are super pretty clean and need no filter or treatment anyhow. Your toothbrush can clean the bottle cap every few days.

Very optimistic . a much needed attitude when attempting that hike . i encountered a few people doing the whole thing while on a short two hour walk at the mt Shasta entrance . I said hello as they walked by with their massive packs on and they responded with a low barely audible " ugh " . almost like an animal growl. 😂 The other encounter was where the trail intersects Florence lake , i went with the owner of the store there in a boat to pick two guys up . they got into the small boat with their heads hanging down . we got back to the store and they immediately bought some cokes and candy bars which disappeared in mere seconds . hilarious , but convinced me to never attempt such a hike. 😂

Best of luck on the PCT. It strikes me as a very tough trail, one you’d probably want to smash the miles to avoid snow season and to reach the next food and water sources more quickly. I’d say it’s a trail for the advanced thru hiker.

The PCT is graded for equestrian use so you don't really have to be an advanced thru hiker. The difficulty hiking the PCT comes from the distance between reliable water sources in Southern California that, consequently, requires carrying more weight from the required extra water. Also, the distance between resupplies can cause some problems. Other than that I would say the CDT would be more for advanced thru hikers. The AT has closer resupply towns but the trail is more difficult because it is not graded for horses.

Great vid as always. Gotta say, you must sleep extremely warm if you're able to get away with just the GG 1/8 foam between you and the ground. Even though you'll go through the Sierra in late June or early July, temps at elevation can still get to mid-30s.

The "dance pants" are the best. Durable and cheap. Found that little trick on BPL. ... Good luck dude!

I loved tarping and cowboy camping in arizona during the fall through winter. Curious how you deal with the skeeters since that wasn't an issue for me.
