I have a thought on the swollen ankle... the fluid from the knee can be traveling via gravity into the ankle. The ankle is the lowest point where the fluid collects. Just a thought.

I swear you missed your calling on being a television star. These videos are SO good. I loved the segment about the new generation of forest trees starting again. Safe travels. We love you!

Wasn't ready for the cliff hanger! Now we have to worry about for two days. My wife and I are following you from UK, and really enjoying the journey you are sharing. Love your attitude to the nature around you. Stay safe out there.

This portion of the trail reminds me of Rotorua, NZ and Whakarewarewa Forest. Geothermal features with sulfur abound and then, just a few miles away, the cleanest air around.

I grew up in northern California, and it is like the desert. It's the dry heat. Redding is regularly as hot as the desert in the summer. You get about a ten degree drop up near Mt. Shasta and Lassen. I hope you stop by Burney Falls. It's worth it!

So Day 80 is June 30, keep on truckin' ! Good to see your back on the trail, that while the knee problem is still there, but it has gone down but now the ankle is an issue. Slipping on lava rock is not good but neither are the smaller holes on the trail. One wonders what if anything is next ?

Dial it down before an injury happens that is serious enough to end your hike. Your body is speaking to you but you aren’t listening. Don’t let arbitrary speed and distance goals cloud your judgement. It doesn’t matter what you did in the past. If your hiking partner’s pace is overwhelming your body, then it’s time to break away and find the pace your body doesn’t hate.

Was the lake water mountain cold or warmed by the thermal heat? Come back in 30 years to see how much it’s grown up. I hope your injuries are minor and you feel pain free tomorrow. Beautiful country.

Part of the lymphatic drainage cycle. If there is no pain and it's simply puffy (no redness or pain etc) odds are your body is simply regaining it's pathways and moving the fluid around. Fact that your knee is suddenly not as swollen suggest its doing well. Cold water and movement will help the drainage.

Oh my Jason, please, you and Bigfoot be careful out there, and be sure to hit the bushes with your trekking pole if you think there are snakes lying in wait. I hope the ankle and the wrist is doing ok. Hang in there! 🙂

burn areas really are something else/ sad but hopeful, very interesting to hike through... some are crazy just how much the fire burns though, some sites are pure dust, trees just vaporized/ still, it all comes back eventually....// rough day on the ankle but sounds like you got past it by now

There is a type of tree in NorCal that only makes new trees due to a fire opening the pinecone and freeing the seeds.. Try laying on back and leaning feet on tree so you're at a 90, ultra runners to this to get the lymp fluid back thru the system... And/or rub fingers from ankle up to lymph glands in groin area. I'd take a spice baggie for the boring meals.

Too bad Drakesbad was closed they have hot pools to sit in might have done your knee some good. I never went in the mileage was wrong to stop. The head game is 90% of it. Oh you passed up seeing the caves!😮 Cache 22 is a lifesaver! I saw the biggest bear print I’ve ever seen south of Alaska on that rim hike. Scared the crap outta me as I was alone and it was fresh. Took a few falls like that, very scary hope you are ok.

as you came to your epiphany I was just thinking about the regeneration and rebirth a forest goes through after a fire and how it is a natural process. As important as growing up. What an amazing opportunity you have to experience it as it happens. 😉
