As a sewer, I'm going to make a few reversible tops for packing. Don't forget that thin scarves can be tied on bag handles, so they don't take up inside space.
To gauge toiletries for a trip, a few weeks before you go fill your containers and make a note of the day you started using them this way you will know how many days worth you have in each container. Just make sure your daughter isn't using them without your knowledge, otherwise your calculations will be up the spout. 🤣 your travel tips are invaluable thank you so much x
Great tips as always and came just in time as we are off on a tropical vacation tomrrow! My husband and I often book aisle/aisle especially on longer flights as then if we need to get up to move around and stretch our legs or head to the washroom we dont need to disturb anyone. We often book window/aisle with hopes that the flight will not be full and we get the row to ourselves and if someone books in the middle then I usually move to the middle and my husband takes the window the person who booked the middle usually appreciates the aisle but we often get lucky, especially lately with getting the row to ourselves. Also thanks to you when I travel when it is cold or cooler i no longer take heavy sweaters but more thin pieces that I can layer, so much more comfortable. People often say I am such a seasoned packer/traveller...love the compliment but I do give you the credit, lol.
Same, I prefer windows for short flights and/or if we are a group together. Otherwise it’s always aisle of the middle set of seats. (Yet I complain when people on the window seat close their windows!!!)
For quick "shampoo" the J&J baby powder that is made of Cornstarch works better than talc/talcum powder. Cornstarch absorbs oil (then brush out). Thanks Laurie!
I like window but since I go to the restroom very often😰 I prefer aisle😅. I used your tips on my international flight last November. No problems at all. Thank you Laurie 😊 Keep those videos coming please.
Hi Laurie! It was very useful in our last trip to Europe this winter your tip on bringing loungewear in case you need to hang out between activities, tks. Also the tip on taking different sizes of baggies if you are in a AirBnb for seasoning meat and taking sandwiches or snacks for day trips. My packing tip for you is that I use to pack jewelry (earrings, necklaces, etc) in small organza bags (you can find them in a dollar store), and then throw them in the lingerie bag or any other bag. Also, in our trips to Europe I always pack one or two sets of plastic-reusable cutlery (from Ikea kids) in case we buy food in a supermarket for a picnic at a park or snack at the train, or late night snack in a the hotel room. Is is always useful and always finds it use hehehehe
I had stopped using plastic bags, cost & not good for the environment. I use glass containers in the kitchen but clear plastic bags for traveling is a must. The zip bags that an item from Amazon come in are a favorite. Unless a plastic bag becomes gross, I wash it in the sink and reuse it the next time we travel. Thanks for the tips and permission to relax a bit about plastic ; )
Hi Lauri! I love your channel I have been watching your videos while I am preparing a trip for my husband and I to go to Europe. Your tips are very helpful. Thank you for your channel. Keep up the good work.❤
We are planning a 30 day trip to Europe next year and I am determined to pack in a carry on. We are cruising for all but 5 days so fortunately laundry facilities will be accessible. Your tips and tricks are very helpful and I'm certain that I'll be able to do it!
Just double check with your cruise line to see if they have laundry facilities for personal use, or do you have to send everything out 2B laundry by their staff. I know some if not all Carnival ships have self laundry, and princess ship some if not all of them have self laundry. NCL does not have self laundry. I cannot remember Royal Caribbean and I haven't been on any other Cruise Line. I always fly into Port one day early. We will either use the hotel shuttle to go to Walmart or call for an Uber. I buy laundry detergent, sunscreen, magazines, chocolate and chips excetera to take on the cruise ship. Happy sailing
Laurie, this isn't the first time I'm saying hello, and I wanted to comment again to remind you how helpful your channel is, how much I enjoy watching and learning, and how many people I've recommended to watch your channel. You're doing great work here!!! Thank you xo
I just booked our first international cruise and we are packing 17 days in a carry on and personal bag each. This will be my first time flying international with no checked bags so I want to make sure I am getting a great carry on for my husband and I. What brand/model do you recommend? I have multiple carry-on bags for domestic but I don’t want to take any chances. Thank you and thank you for your channel, you are a travel angel.
Hope you enjoy it! I would first google your airline and carryon size requirements. The Bento Bag is heavy but huge! This Lily & Drew one is huge too; I tend to pack it when taking a laptop. But I would probably go with a backpack just for ease. We LOVED unpacking once on a ship and touring so many cities. Have a blast!
Thanks for all your tips and tricks. Just want to say if I'm going where it's warm snd I take flip flops, I also wear these in the hotel to save space on packing extra house shoes.
I love your videos. Don’t want them to end. Lol. I ordered the 4 in charger cords and love it, thanks. Yes, i tried to get the electronics bag but not available. I love using baggies. Thanks.
Ok, I worked for 3 Airlines from 1970 until 1981 (2 of them due to a merger),then in 1990 until 2012 I worked for two major travel agencies. I always overpack, and I bring a lot of medicine and comfort items with me. Many times, i end up using all of the prescription medicine and OTC, as well as all of the Comfort items. I will be on a 15-day cruise followed by a two-week land vacation. I am going to perform a dry run of packing this weekend to see if I can get everything into a 21in carry-on and a tote bag. I highly doubt it, but I'm going to give it a try with compression cubes and regular packing cubes.
Traveling to south east Asia in a few weeks for 2 weeks and i really want to do carry on (backpack + roll on suitcase) and your tips are awesome. My husband will be shocked though 😅. Will appreciate it for sure.
aisle! I get up a lot to use the restroom due to drinking copious amounts of water. I have been doing it since I was young. I am now a parent of a 6-year old and it works out now, because he will always prefer the window :-)
Great video! Love the tips. I tend to choose a color for vacation and that is what I go with. Easy to mix and match. I love blue because of the many shades from navy which can be dressy to beachy blues to blue floral etc. Neutral shoes always too. Shampoo bars are great.
Whew!! That was a lot of information in a short amount of time. All very helpful. I don't know when we'll get to travel again, we had to cancel our Egypt and Hawaii trips. Just didn't work out. I still love watching you and getting hacks and hints.
I ship my stuff to the hotel or EBB so I don't have to carry anything. Another tip is to have a box in the trunk of your rental or car. This great if you take your own pillows on a trip. I also make a trip to the wash, dry and fold to get my clothes clean before I go home.
Hi Laurie I just got back from Dubai to London . I watched your tips before I went and really felt happy and confident that security would not stop me . However they did because a took a tube of hand cream which was confiscated. Think it was 100mls Oh well security were doing their job , which made me feel safe . Thank you for the ideas for a capsule wardrobe xx June In The Uk near London
I always take at least one cashmere/blend scarf. If I'm cold on the plane, it makes a great blanket, and I'd rather use that than an airline blanket (which may not meet my standards of cleanliness). On the trip, I can wear it with a plain shirt to dress it up a bit - or throw it around my shoulders when I'm a little chilly. Also, when touring, if I'm going into a cathedral or someplace else where women should wear skirts, I can use it quickly as a wrap-around skirt. I love my multi-function scarves and they don't take much space in the carry-on bag.
Underwear is one I always pack atleast 5 more than I need. After 3 kids I wouldn't dare not to. But luckily they are a smaller item and cubes or pouches have been my dream accessories. Apparently I already had a thing for pouches but Laurie helped me realize I did and why I don't mind hehe
Going on a winter trip bringing a long sleeve black tee shirt and long underwear for my pajamas and can use the long underwear as added warmth and the the long sleeve tee shirt can be used as a tee shirt. Multi use.
Bwhahaha in my dreams! I don't know what it means to pack light. But good on yall. You all are so talented and have some great advice. Me, I bring a full size luggage on a weekend trip. 🤣
Window seat for me. I really value your tips. The amount of shirts to pants is very useful. I always overpack! I have yet to to use a carry-on. But I am going to try hard on my next trip thanks to your inspiration.
If weight isn't going to be an issue, packing cubes (whether regular or compression) can be especially helpful when trying to figure out how to pack in a smaller amount of space, because you can really stuff them full yet the amount of space that they take up will still be limited to a certain degree. I also find that rolling my clothes makes them take up less space, especially when combined with packing cubes, so that's another trick to maybe try.
Your tips are great and so helpful! You have so many videos...is there one that actually shows the packed items in the carry on so we can see how it all fits together? Thank you!
Hi Kim. I have one that shows my entire packing process and this one that may help. I always think people will think it's boring to see that so thanks: bit.ly/CarryOnTips
I’m traveling to Scotland in mid August for one week followed by three nights in Liverpool. What type of clothing would you suggest I bring? Any other suggestions would be helpful too. Thank you.
Hi there! I love your channel… And greatly appreciate your tips. I will be leaving for a two week trip, My question is… We are allowed to take liquids in a 1 quart bag… however, Are we allowed to take TWO one quart bags? No thanks I’m sure I speak for thousands of travelers who you’ve helped along the way.
It's one quart bag per person. If traveling with someone else who doesn't need all that room in their quart bag, put some of your stuff in it. This works really well when traveling with my husband - he takes virtually no liquids.
@@dianeschenkelberg8270 Hi, thank you very much for responding. I travel alone, Will just have to purchase the small travel containers and put the larger bottles in my regular luggage. Many thanks.
Do you have any videos comparing the pros and cons of soft vs hard side carryon suitcases? I have a soft sided now but we have a trip to the UK soon and I’m thinking about updating mine.
Hi Laurie ? I am new to your Chanel and love all the travel tips. We are going on a 10 day Northern European cruise. I am planning on traveling light. Are there quick dry under wear? Didn’t want to pack 13 pairs. Lol
Hi, yes you can. Chunky necklaces might make the TSA want to look at it and feel it, but regular jewelry is fine. I just added the bracelets in the description box.
I have to bring my mother’s travel wheelchair. Does she need a doctor’s note to bring a wheelchair on the plane? Where do they put her wheelchair when she she sits in her designated airplane seat?
Hi Janet. I would ask the airline, but we handed it to the gate agent at the end of the jet bridge and they brought it up to us and not baggage claim. Hope that helps.
Hi Noreen, it is truly the best; no smell, thick but not oily, and can be packed in any container b/c it will not get runny. Here is the link. You may be able to find it in a 3.4 oz bottle in store but sometimes they do not have them that size in store: bit.ly/3OQo6dI
If I’m by myself…aisle I have to go to the bathroom too often lol. But with my son or husband…middle - I let him have window and I sit next to him. If it’s the three of us son in middle husband window me aisle lol
Love your videos and have learned so much...I am going on a panama cruise in April 14days and 2 pre-cruise days..help!! Do you think its doable with a carry on and a personal item?
I do if you plan very creatively. I think casual summer clothing is easier to pack than winter. Do not go to the formal dinner restaurant every night maybe. Maybe treat yourself to laundry on the ship.
My problem when traveling is that I want to wash my sweaty clothes rather than put them in a bag in my suitcase. If I can stay somewhere that has laundry facilities, I could pack less!
Instead of taking liquid dish soap, I cut a sponge in half. I squirt liquid dish soap on the sponge and let it dry completely. Pack in a baggy. It works great when you wet it with water and are ready to wash something.
Laurie didn't mention weight limits so I looked up US airline domestic carry-on weight limits... 18-20kg! That's nearly three times the weight limit where I live which is 7kg (15 pounds). The luggage/personal item size limits in the US are also more generous than other countries or international flights. No wonder Laurie can pack so much! Laurie's tips are great, but be aware, you will have to match your bags and weight to your personal situation.
You are right. Years ago I traveled to Europe with my daughter and purchased international and domestic flights separately. We were carrying one backpack and one carry-on each. When I bought our domestic, low-cost trips I saw that for example: London-Paris was 25$ BUT if you paid 40$ you would have all the rights: seat selection, priority boarding AND free checked baggage (one piece). If you were caught with extra weight, checking your bag would cost… $40!! So I decided to pay the extra cost with the privileges. At one of the airports there were lots of agents weighing cabin stuff trying to discover people carrying more than 12 kg. When one said to me: “sorry, madam, you’ ll have to check your luggage”, I replied: “no problem because it’s already paid!!!”
I looked up the max personal item size and made a big zippered purse bag (thank you RU-vid!) just under that size to use as a mini suitcase in addition to my carry-on when I travel to the UK this year.
Hi Laurie, I have been watching your channel for several months now and have gotten so many great and useful ideas for traveling. I especially liked your suggestion in one video to ask for travel items for Christmas (I got most of my wish list!). I will be traveling to Barcelona, the French Riviera, Florence and Rome this summer and am so excited to try out your packing, TSA, and your carryon tips. I am so glad that I found your channel!
My subscription "Fell off" my devices about a year ago when I was in COVID 19 Recovery for more than 2 years. I still have a COVID infected blood clot on my brain which has kept me totally bedridden, but that won't stop me "Binge Watching" the archived Travel vids. Love your vitality Phil.
With your tips and tricks, I packed for a 10 day trip to Italy! I did hand-laundry twice and purchased a few toiletries from the local shop--which was fun! Your tip for colour schemes works well, too. My favourite is Navy, White and Orange! It makes photos interesting.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie the food was great. Best tip is eating about 2 blocks off the squares/piazzas... With menu in Italian, offering just a few items. Very authentic.
Great tips, love your channel! One thing which rarely gets mentioned is that many airports will have a drugstore/pharmacy etc after security which sell full-size products which you can take on board so if you're concerned about not finding your preferred brand at your destination you can buy immediately before you fly (especially good for sunscreen if you expect to get through a lot in 10 days). Take an extra ziplock to put it into in case of spills. In the UK the drugstore is usually "Boots" and you can order in advance for collection at the airport to ensure your brand is available.
I INSIST on a window seat because the one time I didn’t, my claustrophobia got so bad I was shaking and crying. Even if it’s dark out I *need* to look outside. I honestly hate flying, but I have to this summer (overseas for the first time) and I’m already stressed out about it. Your travel tips are helping, though. Thank you!
Hi Laurie. Just back from. 2 week business trip to the US with hand luggage only. Thanks for your advice it really helped for the use of mesh pouches. I have used packing cubes for years. It was successful. No lost luggage. No waiting and no issues at TSA. Louisiana small airport TSA required me to take out food. My aim now is to always travel with hand luggage. Thanks for your advice. Saw your advice on the new cord packing. I will look for the recommendations as cords are still multiple times needed.
I am BAD at packing my carry-on. 😩 My family tends to road trip (which works well with my overpacking habits lol), but your tips are super helpful for our future flights.
@@lucybronkema6486 That’s really great! It was just me and one other sibling so we had a bit of space to pack. I’m a slightly better packer now though. ☺️
I learned from another RU-vid packing hack a really Trick. Unset the liner in your carry-on and put a flat items in between the bars Get it all nice and level and it makes more room for Packing cubes and other essentials. When I use this to pack for a 10 day trip to England, I found that I had extra room after I fit all of my stuff in It was a good tip about putting a change of clothes in personal item bag I do this so before I land at the airport, I can have a quick change of clothes and a wash up so I feel refreshed
I pack a large heavy shawl (wear over my clothes to get on plane ) which doubles as a blanket for the plane ,hotel or dinner. I also pack my shoes in grocery bags as they are thin and keep everything clean.
We are on our last day of 10-day cruise and did pack carry-on only. There is only 1 top that I’m ending up not wearing. My colors were navy and white bottoms, floral tops generally. Great tips.
@@janetmyers3729 I did it for 15, though, admittedly, that was in a warm climate. I could probably do a colder weather one now, though - I managed to fit all of my clothes and such for a 4-week Christmas break in MN into my little 19" suitcase and 20L backpack (packing cubes are my best friend); the only stuff I wasn't able to fit into them was my medical stuff, and I'd be able to fit all that (except for my wheelchair - I have luggage forks on the front and handles on the back, though, so I can attach everything to it and still have my hands and lap free) into one small bag if I was only going to be gone for 6-7 days. Granted, my mom and I are the same size, so I didn't really need to bring much of any outerwear, because I knew my mom had ones that would fit if I really needed it (I always spend Christmas at my parents' house).
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I wore a mid-calf length black skirt with jewel tone embroidery, a black short sleeve button-up collared blouse, and a thin sparkly brown and turquoise scarf (tied - it wasn't super long, maybe 30" long and only about 6" wide, in a very lightweight thin material - and tucked under the collar like a tie). I may have added my black button-up sweater, but I honestly don't remember (it was 6 1/2 years ago, after all) - I kind of doubt it, though, because it was the middle of the summer, and they didn't have the A/C cranked way up. My regular dress the rest of the time was a polo shirt and an either knee or mid-calf length skirt, so it was already somewhat dressy (it was Europe, after all).
Aisle for me. Easier to get to the bathroom and faster to deplane. My husband likes the window. He can look out, sleep and feels you avoid potential exposure to ill passengers
I wear a skort over the same color leggings during my trip. It makes a stylish outfit especially with a cute longish top. This doesn't work during long flight because of the bathroom, but I do wear the leggings under a regular skirt on the plane for warmth and modesty. Leggings can be turned inside out at night in order to air out thus saving so many washings. As so many places are air-conditioned to freezer temps, I want layers. I have done a 7 day trip in a small personal item bag...just imagine what I could fit in a carryon.. 💜💜💜 this channel Thank you
I'm currently in Iceland for a week. I had to pack a heavy jacket, wind resistant ski tupe pants, wool socks, and winter boots, gloves, and a knit cap since we'll be spending several hours outdoors looking for the Northern lights. Unfortunately, I had to do a checked bag for that one even though I don't wear makeup and I'm wearing outfits more than once.
I wish I had the next size suitcase. Carryon seems too small for 10 days in the summer- clothes can’t really be worn more than once in 90s-100 degrees. My makeup travel sizes is small. Maybe rolling clothes would help.
Window seat, all the way! And, because I preboard, I never have to climb over anyone for boarding, and I never have to get up to let other people in or out.
I can never pass up one of your "Packing in a Carry On" vlogs. One of your hints is to pack smaller items is true like little jars of creams. One aspect of carry on packing I haven't done is to limit undies. Would rather avoid the washing thing, but I have actually washed out a shirt. After going to Alaska on a cruise in only a carry on, the only aspect I found really tough was the weight of the carry on and personal item.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie That's why I make sure to use the restroom right before boarding, or as soon as I've got my stuff situated once boarded, before the seatbelt sign turns on and the plane leaves the gate.
Window seat for me but also for my BFF/travel buddy, so we split the difference: one of us gets the window outbound, the other on the return flight. It’s a coin-toss decision. Also, as a retired OR RN w/MANY years of mask experience (& an earring obsession 🙄), I always wear stud or “huggie hoop” earrings & never had an issue. In fact when I fly, I always wear my jade studs because my great-uncle told me 50+ years ago that jade is good luck for travel & he was right! As always, thanks for all your tips & hacks! ✈️ 🧳 ❤️
Awww that's so neat. Jade is beautiful. Thanks for being a wonderful RN! When you get good ones, they're so helpful!!! They are being pushed to the limits right now.
Hi Laurie! What wonderful tips. I’ve used some of them already. Easier to pack in summer than winter. Yay no heavy coats with lots of layers! Another great video! Thank you.
Hi Laurie, I'm taking a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in March next year so starting to do some research on what I need to make it a memorable trip with little to no stress. I'm taking a personal luggage bag and a carry on so this video was very helpful. I'm looking at pants from QVC by a designer, Susan Graver (planning on buying a black and brown pair of Liquid knit pants and regular Gap jeans). The material is called Liquid Knit and it's very soft but substantial and will take up little room. I've purchased some tops and they take up very little space. They'll be fine packing them in the compression cubes as they don't wrinkle. I already checked on compression cubes so definitely buying these. I appreciate all your good tips. Thanks ❤
Yes, the liquid knit material is so soft and wrinkle proof especially since I will be using compression bags. QVC has sales on Susan Graver items every so often.
